During week 9 of the 1991 NFL season, when the New York Giants played the Washington Redskins on Sunday Night Football, the local CBS affiliate in the Washington DC area, WUSA, bought the rights to the game for $1.1 million, thinking that they were in the clear. Sure enough, guess what happened to be on that same night... and guess what network happened to have the rights to said event

Unlike 1986, the World Series didn’t involve a team from the same city as the NFL game. Washington D.C. didn’t have a baseball team in 1991. The Nationals didn’t arrive until 2005.

Excellent video . Very timely. I remember this game because of the Twins. Also from 1981 to 1991, the Giants won two super-bowls and Washington won 3 super bowls. It was a great rivalry with Gibbs and Parcells. What a difference 5 years made

The DC-NY from 85-91 was a thing of beauty. Gibbs vs. Parcells. The Hogs vs Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson. As a Skins fan, I really hated the Giants. I remember the 86 championship game with the 40 mph wind and getting shut out. But I also remember the next year when the Giants came to RFK and were leading 16-3 in the 3rd quarter. Jay Schroeder threw three touchdowns in the 4th quarter and won it 23-19. One of the best comebacks ever

Crazy part is that exactly five years earlier TO THE DAY (10/27/86), these same two teams (Washington and NYG) had to compete with Game 7 of the WS and even worse, one of the two teams competing was, yes, a team from New York in the Mets. As you would always say, "you can learn more by clicking the card in the upper right corner". And of course, you mention it towards the end..😄

It's moments remembered like this that remind me just how much the DC area -- and the better part of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Maryland -- LOVED the Washington Redskins. The Gibbs era Skins of 1981-92 were a thing to behold. When you think about how great they were back then under the ownership of Jack Kent Cooke compared to what they became under the Snyder ownership, it's kind of depressing. I remember this Sunday Night Football game against the Giants and just how important it was. If anyone had the Redskins number from about 86 until 90, it was the Giants. When they went to the Meadowlands and beat them, I knew they were going all the way. Looking back on 1991, it's bittersweet. It's bittersweet because it was the swan song for the Redskins dynasty and the Gibbs era. Yes, they went back to the playoffs the next year and best Minnesota on the road in the wildcard, but you could see they were completely overmatched against the 49ers in the divisional. One has to wonder what might have been had JKC's sons been able to hold onto the franchise in 1998-99. They were showing signs of rebuilding when they got Brad Johnson at QB and Stephen Davis at RB and almost made it to the NFC Championship in 99. Snyder's "1993 fantasy football" roster did that opportunity in by the very next year. Oh, well. The memories of the 1982-1991 Washington Redskins will live on in my heart forever. HTTR!

I’ve never heard of WPIX-TV (channel 11) carried an NFL game before with the Giants/Redskins, because WCBS-TV (channel 2) in New York City aired Game 7 of the 1991 World Series. Channel 11 only had a football game for special occasions while WPIX-TV was the flagship station for New York Yankees baseball which has been on the station since the 1950’s or 1960’s, and Phil Rizzuto was the play-by-play sportscaster where he says “Holy Cow” throughout the entire game.

This type of controversy almost happened in the Twin Cities 1 year later. Our CBS affiliate WCCO purchased the simulcast rights for a Vikings Thursday Night TNT game against the Lions, I'm not sure what would have happened if the ALCS went to a 7th Game. Luckily the Blue Jays won it in Game 6.

This is very similar to what happened 3 years later in Las Vegas between the ABC affiliate KTNV, the minor league baseball team the Aviators (then known as the Stars) & the biggest sporting event on the planet the FIFA World Cup Final. At the time KTNV had a deal with the Stars in which they would air 25 games per season including 10 games on Sunday afternoons. KTNV was expecting to air the Stars game vs Salt Lake City as they had done for the past 5 weekends in a row. However what they didn't realize was that at the same time as the Stars game, the World Cup Final between Brazil & Italy was going to be aired nationwide on ABC. I should point out that ABC was ordered by FIFA to have every single affiliate around the country show the game no exceptions. Because of this, ABC told KTNV that they had to show the World Cup Final & not show the Stars game. However in an act of defiance, KTNV decided not to show the World Cup Final & show the Stars game instead. Their reasoning was that the local team was more important than soccer. KTNV was dead wrong about that as the people who had bets on the game, fans of the two countries (especially Italy) along with the sportsbooks at the casinos were absolutely livid that they couldn't watch the match & flooded the KTNV phone lines with complaints. Luckily there was an option for them to still watch the match as Univision also had the rights (although in Spanish) to the World Cup Final. In fact the Univision affiliate in Vegas saw a massive increase in viewership from English language viewers in the area because of this controversy. As for how this turned out for KTNV, unlike the story mentioned in the video, it backfired big time as the Stars got beat badly 15-3 by Salt Lake & the World Cup Final despite having no goals scored in either normal or extra time going to penalty kicks with Brazil winning 3-2 after Italy's Roberto Baggio famously missed his kick. KTNV missed out on $3 million in advertising dollars because they decided to favor a local sporting event over the biggest sporting event on the planet.

Baseball also has never fully recovered from the ‘94 strike. Not to mention CBS Sports’ purchase of MLB rights wound up being a bust. The rights then went back to ABC and NBC under the ill-fated Baseball Network, where MLB actually PAID them to air the games. Which brings us back to the strike-it canceled the ‘94 postseason which meant ABC and NBC split the ‘95 Series broadcasting duties. Baseball Network flopped, ABC bailed out, then Fox shared MLB rights with NBC, only for NBC to drop out after 2000. And even though baseball games started being broadcast on cable since the late 1970s, by this time, baseball was gradually being phased out of free tv. Look at the baseball postseason nowadays-the early rounds are on TBS and even they get one of the LCS each year. We’re also now seeing this with March Madness-even the championship is shown on TBS every other year.

WUSA made the right move. They were a hardcore football market and at the time had no baseball team. In fact their old franchise the Senators became the Twins when they moved. An interesting irony. But NFL snd their team were always going to win out over the World Series, even if it was the greatest Workd Series ever played to that point.

@timmick6911 Yeah, no, it's obscenely overrated, 1960, 1975, 2001, 2011, 2014, 2016, and, 2019, were all far better, period, the fact that the Twins fell off of a cliff almost before the victory parade was over truly didn't help, blood simple.

There are two things, however The two same teams in this video were involved in the 1986 Mets game Additionally, the Minnesota Twins were originally the Washington senators, so you may have had some older people who may have had stock in the twins, despite being in DC

Washington Senators was a baseball team. It started back in 1901 until 1971. The final game where the Yankees played against the Senators was back in 1971 where it got forfeit, because they destroyed the entire ball park where the Yankees won 9-0 in a forfeit game which was at the top of the 9th inning and it doesn’t get the final out. There is a full audio of the final game, but the video itself is lost.
