Nathan Carman and his mother, Linda, set out for a fishing trip in 2016. They disappeared, with Nathan miraculously being found a week later aboard a life raft, his mother nowhere to be seen. What could have been a tragic accident, takes a turn when, 3 years previous, someone else close to Nathan Carman was the victim of an unsolved murder.

On June 15, 2023, Nathan Carman was found dead in his cell awaiting trial which was due to go ahead in October. His cause of death is not known but it's believed to have been self-inflicted. He was 29 years old.

I have also had friends and lovers who are on the Spectrum. If we are to acknowledge that folks on the spectrum can love deeply, be kind, careful, and good, is it not only logical that we assume they can be the opposite? We cannot judge Carman by his tone, eye contact, or body language. We can't assume he is guilty or innocent based on his diagnosis. We need to look at the facts.

He knows how to stay alive drifting in rough waters and how stop an interview when questions get tough, but for anything else like police interviews he blames his autism for answers that don't seem to be true or legitimate. When he is confronted w facts and details that don't match his story, he says they misunderstood him bc of his autism.

I live in CT. This story was definitely headline news. I’m personally convinced that Nathan is guilty of both murders. For financial gains. He’s extremely clever despite his austism spectrum diagnosis. How they couldn’t prove it is beyond me. I’m so happy that he was just arrested and charged with something! He’s without a doubt guilty in my opinion.

Being autistic doesn't mean you can't be a scheming piece of shit, my co worker at my previous work was just unable to really understand what people are emoting, he could not distinguish between certain emotions. He also never picked up social ques to understand when to shut up or be tactful when a female co worker's family member died and I was consolidating her. He would just ask stupid questions and not pick up that it was inappropriate to ask certain things.

autistic people can be clever. it isn't "despite" our autism, that's not really fair to say

Listening to him in interviews makes me chuckle, his speech patterns are like mine when I was younger. "It must have been terrifying!" "yes." Also, there is a stereotype that people on the spectrum cannot lie/have trouble lying. That definitely isn't true. Because a lot of them rehearse their responses to potential conversations in their head, some get very good at it, and have no trouble with sticking to a story. Having a monotone voice and not making direct eye contact also throws off a lot of people's radars. They'll assume that person is shy/timid and often drop their guard. Having deficiencies in empathy can also lead to pathological lying if it is logical in their head. Just because people with autism are logic-based, does not mean they are infallible or cannot lie.

Those things, like monotone voice and different eye contact (stereotypes, not diagnostic criteria) are usually used against us. If we get away with lying it's because of ableism, because people think we aren't competent or all there

Wow, who knew? I just thought that they were pretty innocent and yes didn't they lied much! It totally makes sense, I wonder about being serial killers? I know I'm so warped but so is Mike! See what I did there😉

This is so true, thanks for mentioning it! I'm autistic myself and am actually a pretty good liar and actor.. I spend so much time watching non autistic people that I'm pretty good at copying. A lot of autistic people also spend so much time hiding their autism (or masking), that we're already very good at and used to lying constantly without even realizing. I lie A LOT lol!

Many years ago I stayed at a drug rehab on land that Nathan Carmans grandfather owned. He also owned a restaurant in another town not overly far away. I was living on the coast North of Boston at that time. I got married and ended up living not too far from that drug rehab and some other property Nathan's grandfather owned. My husband and I couldn't believe it. It is so sad what the lust for riches does to people, we struggle, but are happy.
