The Bizarre Case of Nathan Carman 

On June 15, 2023, Nathan Carman was found dead in his cell awaiting trial which was due to go ahead in October. His cause of death is not known but it's believed to have been self-inflicted. He was 29 years old.

Dude, I’ve told you this before. I’m the retired coroner of Little Rock, Ar and you and the Coffeehouse Crime guy are my go to true crime creative geniuses. I had a tendency to ignore most crime stuff since I was on the death job for so long. But, you make it enjoyable and I occasionally spit my coffee across the room when you deliver a zinger as only you can do. Thanks.

I never think of how much work Mike is actually doing. I would never be able to find such an amiable mix of seriousness, quality editing, and story telling on like an old school tv channel. 29 minutes no commercials and another great video. Mike is a machine.

His mother was a neighbor of mine in Middletown CT. She had the most beautiful yard and dogs. And, she was always very nice to me whenever I would see her. Such a tragedy.

This is so crazy ! Years ago. My boss than and I cleaned there house Linda’s house . I remember seeing Nathan in his RV . She was always on edge because of Nathan . This is so sad !

The similarities between him & Martin Bryant are uncanny. A relief to know he has died- he absolutely would forever be a risk to others.

I'm in Connecticut and I remember when the boating "accident" happened. This was all over the news..i remember thinking there's more to this once I saw the kid yapping on the news. May his mom rest in peace.

Super weird to see this on a channel I regularly watch. My friend went in a couple of dates with him way back around right before this went down. He was a huge creep. After not talking for a bit dude even tried to meet up with her again clearly low-key trying to guilt her into another date because "his mom just died and needed someone to talk to". I 100% believe he did it.

it's crazy how much your channel has grown since i first started watching you, and your content is consistently respectful to victims and funny without being at their expense. you never fail to tell the details in an interesting way.

As someone with a kid with autism, it is challenging as the mind of such a kid is just wired differently. Not necessarily malicious like Nathan, just different. from the story of Nathan Carman, it seemed like he had loving people around him, but when his favorite horse died, something broke within him.

Those “behavioral camps” some people send their kids to are all out, downright torturous and any parent should be ashamed for doing that to their child. I have a close friend who was forced into one and they still have enduring trauma from the entire experience, it is horrific and often penalizes children with mental problems for exhibiting the symptoms of those problems, something they often cannot help

I had no idea he was charged recently. So glad to hear it. I assumed he got away with murder twice.

Some of the cases you cover are so insane. I don’t understand how they don’t get more coverage. You’re doing theses people a justice by covering it.

IN actual fact Nathan tried to get his inheritance from his grandfathers estate in 2017 after his mother died but the law firm and executor denied it and so did the courts in 2019 because of the suspicion he did it. He is guilty and I hope they can prove it to a jury.

Sounds like Nathan would have gotten away with it (if indeed he's guilty) if he didn't get greedy and go after the boat insurance. I bet he didn't see that can of worms being opened.

Wow! To be in a family which has that amount of money and to live the way they did, yet be so entitled and abusive is just perplexing to me.

Wow the kidnapping part of story. I have a whole new respect for Paris Hilton after hearing how that happened to her. When she confronts her family I was crying. That place probably brought the evil out.

I'm still wondering where he was for the week he was missing. Clearly he wasn't lost at sea because nobody could be in as fine a condition as Nathan.

Inheritance Dance you say? Don’t be silly. You’d pay someone else to dance for you. Great video as always Mike. Your ability to describe unique characters in a way that’s interesting and entertaining without ever mocking is beyond admirable.

Interesting how much more articulate Nathan sounds when he's defending himself in court.

His whole persona gives off a cold, calculating and detached person - his eyes especially are blank. He looks as guilty as they come.

UPDATE to the case (Aug, 2022): VT Judge just ruled that Carman is to be held without bail until his trial as he "is a flight risk and a potential danger due to the seriousness of the charges, lack of strong family, employment or community connections, his involvement with firearms and the ongoing feud with his family over his late grandfather's inheritance"

Mike, I would love to see you do the story of millionaire John Pinder out of Utah. That story has everything, ostriches, an African lion that rides around in a pickup truck , dynamite and criminal stupidity, and so much more.

Mike really has a way of narrating. With all due respect to the case, I kept wanting to laugh because of how Mike interjects some thoughts like the boat's name as chickenpox, "isn't that a condition?" . I have to admit, I lost it right there.

Hi Mike! I just read an article about Nancy Crampton Brophy. She wrote a book on how to kill your husband and is now being convicted or has been convicted of killing her husband. I'd love to hear the details of that one. There's also the Browns Chicken murders in Palatine, IL. I'd like to see you do that story as well. Love what you do. I think this is a tricky one. The majority of people don’t understand the complexities of Autism. I’m not saying he didn’t do it but believing that him “not acting how he should” in traumatic and stressful situations is then proving his guilt is not relative to autistic people

It's almost as if being wealthy with tons of cash almost isolates and puts a huge target on your head making finding anyone who genuinely loves you impossible.

I just love the delivery of his version of the crimes he covers on his channel. For some reason no matter how awful the information is. I don’t leave feeling anxious & scared. It’s almost enjoyable in a weird way if that makes sense. The humour & sarcasm make it easier to listen to & watch. I love true crime & the dark side of life, it intrigues me but almost makes me quite scared so between Bailey Sirien and That Chapter. I’m able to watch this channel fully to the end with out been completely traumatisEd 🥺😱🤯. Being someone who lives in southern Connecticut I remember this story was EVERYWHERE!!! I remember seeing the Coast Guard Blackhawk style helicopters going up & down the coast for days.

*UPDATE: Nathan Carman has died in federal custody, according to a new court filing from federal prosecutors. “The United States received information from the U.S. Marshal that Carman died on or about June 15, 2023.*

When I was 15 my father was a senator and a leader in a church and a wealthy businessman and he wanted me to go to his church and I didn’t like his church so he had me shipped to one of those places in Idaho. They put me in a room very small room with a bed in the middle of that five point restraints the floor walls and ceiling or pink carpet Zane Nelson was my psychologist. And they left me there for days nobody ever was held accountable for the things that went on in that place That was in the 80s I can only imagine what it was like for this guy because I was mentally healthy and it was hard to get through

I used to work for the Aspergers Association of New England. It has since shut since Aspergers is no longer recognized as its own diagnosis, simply a part of the Autism Spectrum. I have also had friends and lovers who are on the Spectrum. If we are to acknowledge that folks on the spectrum can love deeply, be kind, careful, and good, is it not only logical that we assume they can be the opposite? We cannot judge Carman by his tone, eye contact, or body language. We can't assume he is guilty or innocent based on his diagnosis. We need to look at the facts.

Great coverage, Mike! I live one town over from Nathan, which is a town of around 3000 people. This story has been huge around here for years. Cool to see you giving it a goo!

My grandparents were like parents to me for years. They took me in as a troubled pre-teen and saved my life. I've always suspected I'm somewhere on the spectrum, but my grandmother was old-fashioned and wasn't keen on getting me tested. 😂 Anyway, my heart breaks at stories where grand/parents go through stuff like this...Especially really good, kind guardians...He didn't see how blessed he was. That is, assuming he did it. The evidence stacked against him is astounding.

Dude did it sure as we’re all sitting here watching. Destroys GPS and Hard Drive, goes MIA, “loses” his new gun that was same caliber as murder weapon. Then blames the grandpas gold digging girlfriend who would have nothing to gain and would literally be severing the hand that fed her. Then the mom, umm yeah. Just hope that for their sake and for the sake of justice that the travesty of an NG verdict isn’t rendered. We’ve seen some incredible coincidences where seemingly guilty ppl were in fact innocent but this certainly is not one of those instances.

I live in CT. This story was definitely headline news. I’m personally convinced that Nathan is guilty of both murders. For financial gains. He’s extremely clever despite his austism spectrum diagnosis. How they couldn’t prove it is beyond me. I’m so happy that he was just arrested and charged with something! He’s without a doubt guilty in my opinion.

I just wanted you to know ive had a really really bad year, lost some people very close to me, im homeless, got dumped again by the same douche. But thru everything i watch your videos and i swear youve gotten me thru. Your videos are what ill watch to stoo panic attacks. So thank you mike!

Listening to him in interviews makes me chuckle, his speech patterns are like mine when I was younger. "It must have been terrifying!" "yes." Also, there is a stereotype that people on the spectrum cannot lie/have trouble lying. That definitely isn't true. Because a lot of them rehearse their responses to potential conversations in their head, some get very good at it, and have no trouble with sticking to a story. Having a monotone voice and not making direct eye contact also throws off a lot of people's radars. They'll assume that person is shy/timid and often drop their guard. Having deficiencies in empathy can also lead to pathological lying if it is logical in their head. Just because people with autism are logic-based, does not mean they are infallible or cannot lie.
