After the 1986 NFL season, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski thanked the Eagles for everything, and announced that he was going to be a free agent. The only problem? He wasn't a free agent; the Eagles hadn't done anything yet, and wanted to keep him around. This is the story of the bizarre drama and controversy during the 1987 NFL offseason between the Eagles and Jaws

Welp, given how Jaworski was great with the Eagles and the Rams' starting QBs from when he was traded to the end of his career are basically all just tough answers to trivia questions now, it seems like the Rams backed the wrong pony in giving Haden the nod over him.

Pat Haden was a USC guy. They wanted to sell tickets. I lived in Southern California, and many of their Monday Night games were blacked out on TV from poor ticket sales. They couldn't sell out or get to that 80% something attendance threshold. I was under 10 years old at the time, so don't remember in detail.

Jaworski is still the most beloved QB in Philadelphia history in the Super Bowl era. (Sorry, Nick Foles Fan Club). Jaws was a tough guy who stood in the pocket, had a rifle arm (thus, the nickname Polish Rifle) and he was the QB who beat hated rival Dallas in the 1980 NFC Championship game to get to Super Bowl 15. @chrish931
@chrish931 3 года назад
You should do a video explaining how different free agency was pre salary cap and through the different era's from the days of teams having full exclusive rights, to plan b free agency, and through post salary cap and open free agency. A video on Marcus Allen and Al Davis and how Marcus was forced to stay with the Raiders for a few seasons after his contract was up since the raiders would not release his exclusive rights would be interesting. What happened to Marcus and many other players is what finally lead the NFLPA to insist on the end of teams being able to pin down players with exclusive rights which essentially meant that teams could withhold free agency from a certain number of players each season. Its more complicated then that but it meant essentially a team could withhold some players rights to free agency as long as they wanted. The end of exclusive rights is why we the franchise tag now. Franchise tag is much better, since a team can only do it for three years not forever is they want. The team has to pay the player progressively more money each year they are franchised, instead the player just keeping the same pay from his previous contract.

Something similar happened with Jadeveon Clowney and the Texans in 2019. Houston tried to trade him to Miami, but since Clowney was not under contract he could choose his own trade partner.
