This game actually ended when an Eagles receiver caught a 60-yard Hail Mary bomb from Randall deep in Falcons territory with about 10 seconds to play, but because of the timeout that they stupidly called, they didn't have any left and weren't able to get up to the line to clock the ball before time expired.

One other thing that makes this stupid: The clock was stopped when the penalty was announced. Therefore, since the Eagles were declining the penalty, they could have signaled in a play while the penalty was being announced. That would have allowed the Eagles to get to the line to try to run a play and have enough time to change the play if the called play didn’t work. If no play worked for them and the play clock was running out the Eagles THEN could have punted. Then again this proves my point, which is unless you’re Kevin Kelley of Pulaski Academy or the situation is obvious, coaches don’t know what to do on fourth down. This was not an obvious situation.

I remember around 94 or 95 when old man Hess had that press conference where he came out and said he was getting up there in age and he wanted to bring the Jets and their fans another Super Bowl title before he died. He spoke about how much he loved the team and how the fans have suffered for far too long and he wanted to go out as the owner of a Championship caliber team. I got choked up when he said it even though I didnt care about the Jets. It came off as so honest and sincere I forgot about everything else and couldnt help but root for him. Of course all that goodwill went right out the window when he introduced RICH FREAKING KOTITE as the coach Hess believed was going to bring the Jets to the Super Bowl. Rich Kotite, a guy who ran a great Eagles team into the ground. A guy who hasnt worked in football in any capacity since 1996. Not as an assistant coach for another NFL team. Not as a D-1, D-2 or even an NAIA or JuCo team. He didnt even sneak in somewhere as a high school coach somewhere in Texas long after people had forgotten that he was at one time the coach of 2 NFL teams, a coach that ran those 2 NFL teams into the ground. He was gone and so were the hopes of every Jets fan for the next 2 years. Burn in Hell, Hess!!!

He never lead the league in rushing, only had 2 years with 1,000 + yards and was never a first team all-pro and made only 2 pro bowls. His ranking in various statistical categories: Rushing yards per game played - 213th (just behind Trent Richardson) Career rushing TD's - 49th (tied with DeAngelo Williams) Career yards per carry - 112th (in a 32 way tie with a bunch of joke names... and some very good players) Career yards - 43rd (behind Terry Allen) We will never know what he might have done in the NFL with the 3 USFL years. I think it's safe to say however that he would not have gained the 5,000 plus yards he did in the USFL. His first three years in the NFL only garnered him 3,142 yards and 24 TD's. His best 3 years of each category only amounted to a combined 3,499 and 30 TD's. Giving him the lesser numbers would put him in a tie for 16th all time in TD's and 19th in yards. Giving him his best 3 year stats would put him at 11th in TD's and 16th in yards. But, in my mind, either assumption is a bit optimistic. If his rate stats had been better, I would maybe argue in his favor. He just wasn't spectacular as an NFL player. He churned up some pretty big career numbers by being mediocre for a long period. Add that to the fungibility of the position he played and I think there are a lot more deserving candidates.

At, least, the Eagles, later, got their revenge on the Falcons, in 2017, and, for, some extra bite, they did what they couldn't, they successfully, Drove, The, Stake, Into, Tom Brady's, Heart.

Minor point: Summerall and Madden did at least a couple of meaningless games after Thanksgiving. They'd also do at least one game in the stadium hosting the Super Bowl when they were slated to call that game. They did the GB-MIN game on a Saturday in Week 17 of '91, when the very next day CBS had ATL-DAL and DET-BUF. Then in '96 they did STL-NO on the Sunday after Thanksgiving when both teams were already mathematically eliminated amd when evety other game on FOX mattered to some degree.

They called a Division III college football game during the 1982 strike.

Some of those, at least early in John Madden's broadcast career, could be attributed to the fact he doesn't fly and before he got his first Madden Cruiser

Summerall and Madden had been in Dallas for Thanksgiving in '94 so they would have to be within reasonable driving distance for a game three days later. I always wondered why they just weren't given the Sunday after Thanksgiving off

Bottom line you can't make 4th and one . You need to stay home and watch the playoffs.

Who’s the Worst Gameday Decision Maker between Rich Kotite & Dan Quinn?
@gluserty
@gluserty 3 года назад
I'd go with Kotite; maybe Quinn has made some mistakes and had the steadier QB (I'm a Randall Cunningham fan though), but he's had more success (even if that success was ultimately heartbreaking). I don't know if Quinn will get another shot at head coach though, as the Falcons really weren't contenders his last three seasons, similar to how Kotite's career went, just not nearly as disastrous.

I have heard of bad things about Kotite. The fact that the Jets thought this guy was the answer to their problems goes to show that Jets ownership's are horrible.

No. Coach Quinn opting for a field goal when down by four, and less than 20 yards from the end zone late in the fourth quarter. Secret Base did an excellent job dissecting and critiquing that one.
