Who needs the new DUNE movie when you can play the old DUNE game? I'll trade you my .iso file for tickets to see the movie in IMAX! watch twitch if you want: twitch.tv/oboeshoesgames
2:23 actually, they can’t use shields in the desert because it drives the sandworms into a killing frenzy. Regardless, that laser pistol is not a very accurate representation of the fucking perfect death beams that they’re supposed to be
someone at my work actually presented this for a popup and i remembered this video and was like nah this language is confusing and got some praise from my boss lol
I must not fear Dune for the PS2. Dune for the PS2 is the mind-killer. Dune for the PS2 is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face Dune for the PS2. I will permit Dune for the PS2 to pass over me and through me. And when Dune for the PS2 has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see Dune for the PS2's path. Where Dune for the PS2 has gone there will be nothing. Only Oboe Shoes will remain.
not too far off from how the book ends either. I mean, there IS a conclusion and it makes sense but boy howdy does the plot just fly by after Paul wakes up from his Water of Life hangover
About the pistol: the Fremen use a Maula Pistol, which shoots dart/bullet projectiles and most Fremen would have one. They are great especially for non-shield combat in the desert. Paul actually takes one when he and Jessica meet the Fremen and Stilgar tells him he will get one when he has earned it.
@@TheHalflingLad Apologies, the graphics kind of looked like those PSX styled games I would see there, but the gameplay is just like playing a game while blindfolded
"This kill animation is so brutal its banned in Germany" - well I am watching this from Germany and seeing wall blocking off the kill animation got me spooked a bit...
"Frank Herbert actually wanted Dune to be a Metal Gear Solid type Stealth game, but video games weren't made back then so he had to settle for making it a novel." Subbed
Ironically, that sounds _exactly_ like something he would write, especially in the later novels. One of the things that turned me off from the series was just how much of our contemporary stuff was lifted whole into this supposedly exotic world of many millennia into the future. The first book is rather dignified and the three sequels largely keep to this spirit as well, but then some weird shit starts happening and suddenly you get the Mother Superior of the Bene Gesserit go to a bigass Bene Gesserit canteen to dine alongside fellow Bene Gesserit and spend an entire paragraph talking about whatever's happening in the kitchen. Really bizzare, sort of a Frankenstein of literature.
I like this graphical era when every character was represented as vaguely asian-caucasian because it wasn't possible to render them efficiently any other way this was of course especially so with half-assedly produced games like this.
Judging from the font on the cover art and the time this came out, I believe this was meant to be a tie-in with the Sci-Fi channel mini-series. I would highly recommend that series for fans of the book looking for an alternative to the Lynch version which stays closer to the text, though with the caveat that it's low budget and very "stagy" in its production. Unlike this game, it executes well with the resources available.
But it looks like they couldn't secure the rights for that dude who played Paul there (he had short hair). Kinda like in that Godfather game where everybody's movie appearance was lifted except for Pachino's.
As someone who is about to rewatch the first movie which I barely got but I didn't put my full attention so that's on me, and I'm planning to go the see the second movie after that, what do you recommend I should check before that?
The TV show sucks. Sure, it was more loyal to the books, but that doesnt mean anything when your costume department is cringe, your acting is mediocre, and your writing is Network TV level
You know what bothers me in a ton of sci-fi? 3:30 If you can't move a muscle why can you talk?!? Your jaw requires muscles in order to move! Your eyes are also controlled by muscles! Could they not get the exposition done in any other way? I see this kinda thing everywhere.
I recently played this last week and on original ps2 hardware. I can confirm that the audio issues you were having seem to be the result of emulation however on original hardware it drops to 15fps when there is more than 2 enemies on the screen so pick your poison
So...was that robot boss an illegal Ixian machine bought illicitly by the Harkonnen and smuggled to Arrakis, or did this game just throw the book's lore completely out the window because "science fiction = robots" and they needed an inconsequential boss fight for that level so YOLO?
To be fair, having the player fight illegal Ixian and Tleilaxu creations could be cool, even if it wouldn't be 100% lore friendly. The Westwood Dune games for instance let you recruit exotic units from those factions, if your faction gained a strong enough favor with them. But of course the problem here is we are talking about something possibly being cool in the PS2 Dune game.
I'm a huge Dune fan. Have the books, audiobooks, David Lynch movie, Sci-fi Miniseries, the Sega CD game, Sega Genesis game, the Dune 2000 P.C. Big Box game and the PS1 port of it. I've never heard of this one. I can see why it's never mentioned and talked about. Holy balls this is worse than the Baron's bowel movement and uglier than Gurney's scar on his face (as described in the books).
I really like this video. Reminded me of a lot the old lets plays here on youtube where people would just speak normally and didn't try to make silly jokes every 5 seconds to hold your attention. This has the same chill quality those old videos had.
The Fremen do use guns in the book. I think they're called slug throwers? I don't quite remember. But Paul takes Jamus' during their little confrontation which leads to the ritual duel.
There are weapons called maula pistols which I believe were projectile based. I think slug throwers were supposed to be today's kind of firearm tech because I believe they were described as antique and primitive technology.
You didnt mention that this is material from the 2001 Scifi Dune miniseries When i watched that as I was little i was blown away by the special effects But yeah thats where this comes from
The Fremen did use "Maula Pistols", so it was some sort of gun weapon. In the desert, NO ONE uses a shield because it would call all worms around straight to eat your ass, so projectile weapons are game on!
9:02 This moment is a brilliant reference the song "Beast Infection" on Grimes' Dune-themed concept album Geidi Primes and also her song "Belly of the Beat". Truly an incredible review.
I remember being hyped for the game when I finished Emperor: Battle for Dune. Thankfully I got to try the demo first XD Oh, and Allia looks hideous here :D
The laser gun is actually accurate since in arrakis the rhytmic vibrations of the shields attract worms which is why they are not commonly used. Mechanical guns are also banned since the robot war that hapaned 10000 years before the time the book is set.
Found your channel and started watching some of your videos and really appreciate the work u put in and makes me happy that ur starting to get more recognition
This was my introduction to dune. I can’t believe I loved this game when I was a kid, just playing whatever was on my dads laptop at the time. This shit was so fun and great for some reason.
I played this on the PS2 in the PS2 era... and couldn't get beyond the first stretch of desert with the sand worm. Ten years later I tried again and got further... and got bored trying to blow up the first harvester. So you've got a lot further than I ever did. Kudos!
@@noahfessenden6478 It's been awhile. I remember liking it. It's somewhat similar to GTA, if it took place in the 1940s. Loosely based on the movie. You can wear different outfits, create your character, bribe corrupt cops, fight mob families. Has some RPG elements, if remember correctly.
@@jaspermcminnis5538 the godfather game was absolutely brilliant. Had all the characters and set pieces from the first movie. Great clothes and racketeering system. Absolute gem on the ps2, probably as good as gta, it just didn't have as much in it
When I was a little kid I had this game on a cd, I couldn't make it past the first level (i was like 6 or 7), and recently I tried to find this game, but all i was able to find was the RTS games from the same era. Your video helped me understand that I indeed saw that game and that I am not insane, and secondly, closed the gestalt by you completing the game, thank you very much!
You could use a program like Xpadder to map the KBM inputs to a controller, such as arrow keys to the thumbstick. It's pretty handy for older games with bad KBM layouts.
RU-vid been wanting me to watch this for a long time, every time a video ends it's the one up next if not it's suggested first like damn fine, but I can't lie I'm entertained.
Oh god THIS was my first ever exposure to the Dune IP! The title always sounded vaguely familiar and now I finally know why. I must have seen this in a magazine ad.
I like that people who complain about guns in dune always bring of the Shield/Laser argument, THE THING IS you forget that people dont wear shields on the sands of dune because it makes the worms erratic
They use the laser guns on arrakis because if someone has their shield activated while they are standing on the sand it drives the worms into a frenzy.
This is the first video i've seen by this guy, and it's excellently entertaining without going into cringe territory like many others do. Good job, subscribed
So at 1:11 when you said "Walk without rhythm" I immediately thought of Weapon of Choice by Fatboy Slim. Was he making a Dune reference in that song? I always imagined a bird or something hunting an actual worm with that line "Walk without rhythm and you won't attract the worm" but holy shit, I'm seeing it in a new light lol
well on dune, people used guns again because shields attract the worms. Fremen especially would always use their guns, their krys dagger being of more ceremonial value. Only once it's unsheathed it has to draw blood otherwise it will dissolve. Only the fedaykin used their daggers extensively.
