Horror icons Boris Karloff (Frankenstein) and Bela Lugosi (Dracula) star in the shocking classic The Black Cat based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. After a bus crash on a lonely Austrian road, American honeymooners Joan (Julie Bishop) and Peter Allison (David Manners) are forced to spend the night at the house of Poelzig (Karloff), a sinister looking man who is engaged in an intense feud with Dr. Werdegast (Lugosi), whom the couple met on the Orient Express. Held captive in the mausoleum against their will, they soon discover that Poelzig is the high priest at Black Mass and has chosen Joan to be the Devil’s bride. The couple is then faced with trying to escape the unspeakable treachery culminating in an unforgettable climax to this horror classic.

Fantastic film, these two play off each other spectacularly and it's a real treat to see Lugosi as an anti-hero. That ending had to have been the most brutal possible way they could have done it in the 1930s.

They did not have issues with one another and people need to stop spreading false information. Bela and Boris had a great relationship, idk where this rumor is even coming from. Do some research people.

Yeah, Lugosi had a harder time having consistent quality work despite his incredible talent. Karloff often got a lot more good parts and Universal seem to give him a lot more attention. I think some assumed that this meant there was tension between the two, but this was a myth.

@user-yp6dy4df8w , Karloff had a large advantage in that E English was his native language! One reason, with few exceptions, Lugosi was typecast

One of the things director Edgar G. Ulmer wanted to point out was the broad chasm between the nihilistic Europeans (who were recovering from a devastating World War) and the naive Americans.

As a kid in Denver in the late 50's, the ABC channel 9, had a show every Thursday at 1100PM, called " Shock " . Sometimes, Dad would let me stay up & watch whatever the film was. This classic is one of the very best. -------------------MJL, 77 y/o

I gave this a thumbs down because the very important part was chopped off. The Hays Act didn't affect the movie. Is FB now censoring old movies?? For Shame!!!!
