This song is actually based on the story of Carl Tanzler. He was a radiologist who was obsessed with a young woman who was a tuberculosis patient. After her death he dug up the corpse and lived in his home with the preserved body for several years.

The way he does like 16th to 32nd notes in this chorus seems so inhuman when I was in high school.. I used it as a hand warm up lol.. Shannon was wild in all that remains too but I could play six lmao.. Alan the current drummer is the nicest dude.. I’ve had a few chats with him and he really likes thoughtful fans. His drummer is absolutely out of this world and that’s why I love tbdm not only do the play very very well, they are all very genuine and humble

To me, the lyrical content of BDM, as a listener at least, is simply an acknowledgement of the terrible aspects of life. And with that it is an expansion of consciousness.

100% that's a great way of saying it. Not just with BDM, but Metal in general frequently covers the darker side because, quite simply, it's real. Most people, however, would rather turn a blind eye to it than acknowledge and truly face it, whether it's some twisted story like this or the nature of death, war, existentialism, the brutal truths of life etc. These things make people uncomfortable, but being uncomfortable is a great thing too as it can lead to strength of mind, and an expansion of consciousness like you said.

Super interesting conversation! Where does morbid curiosity come from and are there consequences of indulging in it too much, as either a writer or listener? I wonder, do people who listen to this music have lyrics stuck in their head the same way you would Take on Me? Hearing anybody sing under their breath about necromantic sin or removal of the eyes, I’d run not walk away from that person, respectfully. 😅

Interesting examination of the potential feedback loop for artists exploring the extreme edges of human behaviour. For me it comes down to the difference between fascination and fantasising. One can lead to the other, but doesn't necessarily have to. I enjoy a good hacker / slasher flick, am a fan of metal, although not usually this black, and have also written some fiction with pretty dark stuff in it, BUT if pushed then I'll probably give my favourite film as the Incredibles and favourite TV show as Bluey. And the thing with music with this type of vocals, I'm willing to bet that Richard would love it just as much if the lyrics were in a different language.

It's all about detachment. The lack of implementation in ones perception is the problem. A lot of people simply fail to separate the art from reality even if it's based on a real life event, but if you practice detachment then these lyrics won't affect you too much negatively. Fascination is an accurate way of saying it but it leading to fantasising is extremely unlikely unless the person is a bit unhinged lol.

I thought Judson's point around dark topics within metal was an amazing point. And while he did specifically mention it, for a lot of people this is is part of a subconscious prejudice that Metal has dealt with for a long time. Most people don't wonder if a famous horror director would have those kind of desires.

Judson's points make sense but are definitely coming from someone who hasn't fully grasped the point yet, though he's getting there. He'll get used to it on this journey then eventually will see where it's all coming from. For real though, rarely anyone bats an eye at a horror director, unless it's one of those extreme types like a Serbian movie. I think maybe only once in my life have I ever heard anyone say "you have to be fucked in the head to think up something like these movies", and that was about the Saw movie series lol. It's a shame that metal gets a bad rep because of these things. It's all art, just a different medium.

Rip trevor, a true legend and a great vocalist! In a similar vein, to maybe get judson to appreciate weird vocals a bit more, i'd recommend taking a look into the poetic edda, an ep by both disembodied tyrant and synestia. Great stuff, any of the 4 tracks would be great, i'd honestly recommend the whole 20-23 minute ep. On completely different note, maybe show him a track (or all 7 of that album) from blut aus nord's disharmonium - undreamable abysses. My recommendations would be into the woods, chants of the deep ones, tales of the old dreamer or that cannot be dreamed, in all honesty the entire album is amazing, the atmosphere is impeccable, and it similarly demonstrates that all lyrics don't need to be understood, especially under the correct context, such as in unnameable and unspeakable cosmic horror for instance. And yes, I'm inexplicably hellbent on opening judson's eyes to more than just the traditional purposes of vocals. Oh and to maybe give judson a better understanding regarding insane double bass chaos, survival's careening inertia by vitriol is a great representation in my opinion of how that blistering speed is used to display an extremelt atmospheric and deliberately crushing sound. He will fight savagely would also work, but as survival's careening inertia is an instrumental piece i feel it might work a bit better. Weird how a classic BDM song sprung all these suggestions to mind. Weird connections i guess?

Man, I've listened to this song and album so many times, I used to listen to it at least once a day walking home from school. I always have so much nostalgia listening to this album now. TBDM have always been one of my favorite bands, and this is one of my favorite albums from them! Of Darkness Spawned might be my favorite on this album. To A Breathless Oblivion really hits different after Trevor passed away... :/ Speaking of favorite bands, I'd love to see you guys react to some Be'lakor! 😁 When it comes to the lyrics and fascination, and the things Judson was talking about with how healthy or potentially "risky" (for lack of a more accurate word) it is to write about and constantly listen to this stuff, I think it must heavily depend from person to person. I say this because I've been listening to stuff like TBDM for like 20+ years since I was in middle school, and playing violent video games my whole life, and even after all that, real life violence/blood/gore makes me intensely uncomfortable/disturbed and even realistic gore in movies can be hard to look at for me. I've gotten more comfortable with it lyrically since the first time, but I've never felt any more comfortable with the real thing, let alone had any kind of desire or positive feeling toward it. Also as far as how I view it, I view it like any other fiction. It's no different from the villain in something like Lord of the Rings. Sauron and the Witch King are badass characters and they're awesome to see in the movies and I'd buy like an art print or figurine of them, but obviously they're horrifically bad people who I'd _never_ praise in real life. The battles with the giant armies are really cool and entertaining on screen, but I wouldn't ever want to actually see or participate in a graphic and brutal war like that in real life. I don't see why lyrics like this would be any different. I feel the same with a song about like satan and demons as I do about Sauron or Voldemort (plus I think they're equally fictional). I'm not sure that I'd say it's inherently bad, but if anything I'd be more worried about people who love to watch true crime documentaries and read books about serial killers etc. In those cases they're obsessing over the actual thing at least.

I think there is some morbid curiosity in this stuff that is generally harmless, but I think it becomes more curious when it's presented in a sort of different way, as Trevor did with his lyrics for songs like this. While lots of metal lyrics try to be disgusting or filthy or graphic, when they are presented in an almost noble way like they are in this track, there something a little more intriguing about the story. I suppose you could link it to perspective as well. Evil can be a matter of perspective, as is often discussed when talking about wars and such, where both sides think they are the "good guys." Do serial killers see themselves as bad people? Surely some have, but many have clearly stated they think they were doing good by ridding the world of certain people or that they were making "art" or whatever. The delusion that something like that could be a positive is somewhat unbelievable, and unbelievable things tend to attract curious people. One thing interesting about metal is the frequent duality or contradictions or whatever you want to call it. Album artwork that makes you go "I want to buy that album" is often of something that, were you to see it in real life, you would gasp and look away from. Some of the most brutal or frantic music can be relaxing, lyrics about uncomfortable subjects that we can't actually relate to but we still raise a fist and yell it out with the vocalist at a live show, jarring dissonant notes that seem to almost work against themselves yet we find them beautiful and get them stuck in our head for a week, etc. I recommended them before, but it would be interesting to see what Judson thinks of First Fragment. Lots of neoclassical melody and lots of solos, but it would be interesting to see if he thinks it's cool or if it's maybe a bit too busy and chaotic. For songs, "Gloire Eternelle" kinda encapsulates the band's sound well, but "La Veuve et Le Marteur" is shorter and groovier.

I don't keep any kind of negative energy from brutal music. For me it is all in the vocal delivery that i come the awe that I'm seeking. In the same way than some melodic death metal that would have some kind of theistic lyrics. I'm not believer, but sometime parts of it still can make sense to me. And whatever if it dos or not. When something catch me in the music &/or vocal delivery. It's simple, I'm sold to the song. I don't exactly know why, but putting myself in the extremes with music like melodic death gives me some kind of energy; like nothing else. And it is actually helping me so much to be calmer & more posed when I'm facing adversity in reality.

This conversation is interesting. To me, as a listener to this extreme music, it’s an art form a kin to writing fiction. Horror and thriller novels and books can be talked about in the same way. Would you say that Stephen King would give in to the thoughts that he creates with some of his characters? Same thing with a lyric writing that writes these types of lyrics for a song.

This was really interesting to listen to. I have some different perspectives on Trevor though… Trevor was a poet and could paint the prettiest pictures you have ever seen using the ugliest colors available. I don’t think demons got to him by playing with these subjects but I do think he was interested in them because of a continuing cloud within. If you listen to any of his final interviews it sounds like the pressure of being the best frontman and such a persona in the metal scene and feeling like his next work couldnt live up to his previous self. He also mentioned a few time about his body image. All speculation of course but it seems very human to me. Last note, anecdotally my mom has suicidal tendencies and she is the brightest, sweetest, kindest lady you could meet, and to me if that can’t keep the bad away then I don’t think dark subjects invite them in. 🖤

I feel like I've been saved by Trevor's lyrics, especially songs like To A Breathless Oblivion, and Receipt. That dark thoughts aren't as isolating as we believe, others think these thoughts and have these feelings, and that doesn't make you dark or bad and most importantly, you aren't alone in that space. It's not glorifying to me but an exploration of these dark spaces, not to indulge, but to understand.

I still struggle to listen to Receipt after his passing, because the song is heavy as f and the lyrics are waaay too direct to the point. But "To a Breathless Oblivion" is so melodic, beautiful and poetic that I can't help myself.

I hear you, you can almost hear how devoted he was to ending it, it always gives me physical chills. However, as someone who wrestles with the concept myself, it's a somber reminder that it's not an individual struggle, many people face the same turmoil and in a world that so readily chooses not to look at it, Trevor's words are almost hopeful in that we can at least talk about it, and give some focus to that, for lack of a better term, demon..

There's almost endless accounts of animals killing for fun. Young male elephants will crush an animal and then effectively dance around to show off, it isn't until they're in a herd of males where the oldest male teaches them what's acceptable behavior. It's honestly all over the place and there is probably utility for our species historically to have some of these monsters running around. I think the conditions a person grows up in can take the a small smolder of psychopathy and stoke it into a fire, history has endless examples. I also think we've all got a little of that in us. Horror can scratch at ich in us that we have because we're so removed from death and violence today. My mom had to kill a chicken to eat chicken, a lot of people today can't handle raw meat. Life used to be full of brutal illness and you watched people die all around you often when they were young. Trevor is a great loss and maybe he was too pointed toward that stuff, but let's not pretend we're able to diagnose what was going on there. Parents since Elvis have been doing that and we're not psychologists. Another quick note on the medical vs. recreational gore and work, I totally agree that the morals are clear in that case, but it still effects the people doing the work. People in the medical fields are often found to have decreased empathy and there's a ton of them taking serious emotional damage from the work. I've heard it described as flipping a switch by some doctors, they tell parents that their kid is going to die and then completely break down when they get out of the room, but if they survive it, eventually they can disconnect emotionally from the situations, but it can be difficult to turn it back on.

TBDM was my favorite band from like 18-20 years old. Nocturnal was my favorite album and Statutory Ape was my favorite song. I basically stopped listening to all death metal when I moved out of my parents' house at 20, no more need for it, and I switched to happy music like EDM and RHCP. Death metal didn't make me more aggressive or explore dark paths. It actually made me calm and happy/pleasant. I think it was an outlet for an aggression that I didn't let myself feel or explore. I had a miserable step dad who was a really bad example of masculinity so I think I told myself I wouldn't be like him. Anger and aggression was repressed. So maybe TBDM and death metal WAS an outlet, to put out there, as Judson said. I don't think anything bad necessarily came from it. So, that's where I stand on the chicken/egg question when it comes to metal lyrics affecting one's mental state (as a listener). I think Trevor had to already be demented in some way to be able to even come up with those lyrics and being really good/artistic about it probably made him worse (rip Trevor). So if the mental illness trigger isn't there, I think this music can be OK to listen to, but it's probably a sign you need to change something in your life. Glad to hear ya'lls discussion at the end there. 🤠
