The quarterback position was primarily a white position long after integration in college football. But quarterbacks like Tennessee Volunteers' Condredge Holloway, Notre Dame's Tony Rice, Houston Cougars' Andre Ware and UNLV's Randall Cunningham revolutionized and changed the perception of black QBs. Before long, Virginia Tech's Mike Vick, the Texas Longhorns' Vince Young and Lamar Jackson of the Louisville Cardinals changed the game. Watch "The American Game: Integration" on ESPN.

This is mostly talking about what they did for college, obviously McNair's impact at the NFL level was huge. But in college especially at HBCU most quarterbacks are black, this is more about how they began playing for non-hbcu powerhouses.

As for Mike Vick, why are "they" singing his praises now when "they" destroyed him and even sent him to prison in 2008. I guess the fact that upon his release Vick humbled (humiliated) himself and crawled back for their forgiveness. This seemingly pleased the powers that be so much that they have now loosened the strings by which Vick is bound. Give me a break!

Major Harris one of the of greatest college quarterbacks I had ever seen!!! I was an Ohio State fan at the time but would watch WVU games just to watch Major play. He was truly a gifted player. Too bad he got hurt the third play of the Fiesta Bowl or it might have been a different ball game..

Sports Reports comics so you look up to guys who aren’t elite passers and are known for running??? Focus on your passing game if your a QB. Skin color ain’t got nothing to do with this if you can sling the ball and be accurate with good decision making you will play skin color doesn’t matter. Plenty of guys in the league who are amazing passers. Russel Wilson Dwayne Haskins are two of my favorites because of how well they understand the game.

@greg sheppard nothing I like Steve Young he's white all I am saying is that the position used to be an all white position in the 1950s 1960s and when a black quarter back got a chance to play he took the opportunity and since then you have seen many African American quarter backs have a chance in the NCAA and the NFL to play one of the most responsible positions in football.

greg sheppard I assuming your not black with this question. Nothing is wrong with it. It’s just the stereotype that most QBs are white. When I told people I wanted to be a QB and they knew how fast I was they automatically say “why don’t you just play receiver you’d be better there” it gets aggravating. I’m more of a decision maker and running routes isn’t as stimulating as reading a defense and finding the its weakness. You don’t realize how real the stereotype is until you hear it all the time and are expected to do a certain thing just because of how you look and play.

People still forget about Chuck Ealey, University of Toledo...led the Rockets to 35 consecutive victories...1st Team All- American in 1971...yet overlooked in the NFL draft, had to go to Canada to prove he could play QB...just like Warren Moon, Condridge Holloway and Damon Allen (Marcus's brother)...he gets overlooked as well.

I was a draft dodger living in Toronto when Jimmy Carter gave us a pardon: first thing I did was take my Canadian gf to see Washington Huskies and Syracuse in Syracuse. Warren Moon was unstoppable, firing rockets to Spider Gaines etc, but SU hit a fg on the last play of the game to win, the crowd went wild. Then my gf understood why I was a ncaa sports fanatic!

I was the best throwing guy on my team in Jr high and High School, but I wasn’t allowed to play quarterback. Instead, they gave me the ball on reverses and to pass to receivers. Also one important person this segment missed was that of Eldridge Dickey of the Oakland Raiders. He was the first black quarterback drafted in the 1st round. Coming from Tennessee State he was drafted #25 by Al Davis and played behind Darryl Lamonica and Kinney Stabler. Unfortunately, he was moved to wide receiver and never got the chance to play QB in the NFL. Thank you for covering this subject.

The first black quarterback in the National Football League was Frederick Douglass "Fritz" Pollard. He played the position for the Akron Pros beginning in 1919 or 1920. I like what Vince Young said. No matter what color you are, you must prepare. When you work hard, train harder, know the game and the plays, put the team ahead of your own goals something good is going to happen because you have put your self in position to take advantage of an opportunity. We all know that there is a "White" system in place so all people of color have to be better at overcoming adversity. Excuses are weak and blaming is getting old. Now is the time, live your best life possible all the time and everywhere you are.

Eldridge Dickey is the Black Quarterback who's name doesn't get mention. He was the Quarterback at TSU from '63 to '67, he was Mike Vic before Mike Vic, he could throw 60 yards with either hand and in 1966 he led an undefeated TSU team to the black college national championship. Ohio State was ranked #1 the same year, TSU asked to play Ohio State and State didn't want no parts of Eldridge Dickey. He was also chosen as the QB on the All-time HBCU team!!!!!!

He also was the first black qb to be drafted in the first round #25 pick overall to the Raiders. James Harris out of Grambling was the first black qb to be a regular starter in the NFL.

No one ever mentions Willie Totten , he played at Mississippi Valley state. He set over 50 Division 1-AA passing records. They averaged 59 points per game in 1984 in passing offense. By the way his college teammate was Hall of Famer Jerry Rice. Totten only got to play in the league as a replacement player for Buffalo.

1974, James L. "Shack" Harris (drafted out of Grambling University in 1969). Harris, originally drafted by the Bills in 1969, eventually was traded to the Rams where in 1974 he made the Pro Bowl as QB.

Another great CFL Black QB was Tracy Ham he was a little like a Russell Wilson. He’s in the College Football Hall of Fame and CFL Hall of Fame. It’s really the CFL who paved the way for Black QB’s.
