Today's puzzle was recommended to us by the great Qodec and with good reason. It's by TotallyNormalCat and it's another of their magnificent hybrid puzzles - this time mixing sudoku with a bit of Yin-Yang! You can play the puzzle at the link below:

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Normal Yin Yang rules apply (ie shade some cells in the grid such that all shaded cells are connected and all unshaded cells are connected. No 2x2 box may be fully shaded or fully unshaded.) Clues outside the grid give the sum of the first continuous block of shaded cells seen from that direction.

I was yelling at Simon for 40+ minutes to extend the green in the bottom left corner to 3 cells (because 19 can't be made up of 2 cells only) right when he established they grey in r1c1 ... only for him to resolve it at the very last colouring bit in a way more difficult way. Classic Simon things :D

When the X-Wing formed itself which eliminated the 3 in box 7 I was so happy because I saw it right away and when Simon started explaining i was like "Yes and therefore we have a 124 triple which gives us the 3!" But Simon just deleted the pencil marked 3's in box 7 and moved on ... That was so unsatisfying

The sheer tenacity in avoiding the 124 triple in column 3 is commendable. Of course, I probably couldn't solve this puzzle in thrice Simon's time, but I'll take what I can get.

There was a much simpler logic for the bottom left corner, almost from the beginning: The grey cells on the top add up to 26, because of some secret the green cells at the bottom have to be 19, which needs at least 3 digits.

I know Simon does as much as he can to avoid Sudoku in preference of more intricate logic, but the 3 in the 1-2-3-4 set in column 3 for the bottom 10 clue was there for quite a while and every time he highlighted any of those squares or was looking at 3s in the area, I kept hoping he'd see it.

You are so ridiculously good at these geometry puzzles, Simon. I can usually follow along with your solves, and often even see things before you do, since your commentary is so generous. With puzzles that rely on geometry, math and triangle numbers like this one, though, you are almost always several steps ahead of me, and all I can do is try to keep up as you drag me through the darkness. 20:29 I've definitely picked up a few things from watching these videos; for example, you could have easily determined the *maximum* size of a 26 clue, with all the digits minimized. The triangular number for 7 is 28, so the shaded region could be no larger than 6 cells. Ergo, the unshaded cells in R1 must grow upwards, which also nets a shaded cell in R2C8 to prevent a checkerboard. I honestly thought you'd notice it at some point, but went the entire video without it. Seems to have worked fine, regardless.

And then he somehow finds a ridiculous complicated way to tackle the issue from a completely different direction, to get that solution. I wouldn't even be able to do that in my wildest dreams. I think resolving the puzzle isn't necessary, but it'll be fun to see you either completely get stuck in the same spots when you can just do sudoku, or completely blast through parts previous Simon got stuck on.

I agree, going back and re-solving seems like overkill...the truth is, EVERY other logical deduction Simon made in that puzzle was on point, and none of it really relied on the faulty placement of green except for one decision at the very end, which completed what would otherwise have been and x-wing that the arrow itself would have disambiguated.

Sometime I'd love Simon to notice some deduction he help us acheive. It would have helped finishing the ying-yang before delving into much sudoku. This time around, it concerns the 15 clue at the bottom of the grid. It is possible to deduce that 7 has to be in column 5 in box 8! Either the 15 clue is 2 cells, in which case it is a 78 pair, or it is 4 cells, which (as simon himself notices) puts a 7 in r9c5. This in turn helps colouring r8c4 and r7c4 green, because a solitary 7 can't be there anymore, which, along the 3 green cells at the bottom or column 1, allows to finish the coloring

This was really fun to solve! Last time I saw the yin-yang rule on the channel, I didn't have a clue how to even approach the puzzle. Watching Simon carefully explain how to make progress in the ruleset on that occasion, and particularly the anti-checkerboard rule and perimeter colour-change constraint, allowed me to solve this puzzle on my own. (Amusingly, Simon seemed to forget the second of these in this solve, which would have given him a much easier path to shading the bottom left of the grid.) I feel I've made great progress as a solver since discovering this channel 9 months ago, and I have Simon and Mark to thank for a lot of that progress. So, Simon, I don't think you should let yesterday's "ricket" get you down too much. Truth be told, I made exactly the same logical error in my first attempt at the puzzle (my solution had valid arrows but violated the anti-knight constraint), and it was only by looking at the channel discord that I realised where I'd gone wrong. That you feel the need to make amends for yesterday's video is a credit to both you and the channel you run, and I can't wait to see the runback tomorrow. :D

We were fine while you were gone, and even though you made that mistake of posting two videos the other day I felt that was a lovely bonus. As for the mistake yesterday, I will look forward to your video showing the correct solution NOT because I feel that I deserve anything along those lines or need it or that you need to do it for most of our sakes, but because it will be another chance to see you in action. Perhaps I'll give the puzzle more of a try myself before watching the corrected video. Welcome back, lovely video and puzzle today, and many thanks to TotallyNormalCat for this great puzzle. Me at 55:30: Screaming "DO SUDOKU with the 10 clue." Kills off quite a bit! Simon at 58:10: "Maybe it's Sudoku" Me at 58:11: "FINALLY!!! And even then he doesn't see the 1-2-4 triple for another 6 minutes! He's still a lot better at this than I am!

I finished in 227 minutes. I started of strong due to remembering the checkerboard rule, but then I got hard stuck. After 177 minutes, I gave up and started to watch the video, only to be reminded of the second secret rule to Yin Yang Puzzles regarding the borders. After that, I was able to color everything 221 minutes in, before a strong finish. If you do not remember those two secrets, the puzzle becomes impossible to figure out. Besides taking a while, this was a fun puzzle. Great Puzzle!

Had a slow solve time of 146:02, but I did solve it. I also didn't watch the video long enough for Simon to tell me that the parameter could only be two blocks and that checkermarks would break the puzzle, so I had to figure that out and prove it myself. Slow, but steady progress throughout that followed a rather similar solve path (though I spotted the 124 triple right away!)

My favorite part of this puzzle was discovering that no matter how the box 8 15 clue finishes, it always plonks a 7 in column 5 in that box and forces the 7 clue out of the box entirely.

@26:50 A method to notate that which I just thought of could be to use the Line tool and put a line between r3c2 and r3c3. So the line would indicate they need to be different colors. Likewise you could use the line tool to connect cells which you know are the same color but not which color. Just a thought on possible methods of notation, for yourself or others. :)

45:57 you could actually tell the 7 didn't start at the bottom before sorting out whether or not the 15 extended. If the 7 started at the bottom, it would be a 1 cell long block to avoid 2x2 and therefore, be a 7, so it would eliminate both 7-8 and 6-9 for the 15, so 15 would extend, putting a 7 at the bottom, on the same box as the shaded 7.

Around 56:49, it's easier to know that the 26 column, but have at least 19 in green cells at the end, so it must take at least 3 cells. Then the rest fills itself.

Welcome back, Simon. I'd noticed the two digits crossed over in the last video but figured it was just a typo at the end -- nothing significant! And I'm surprised that you apologized for the day when you posted an extra video: a bonus! a treat! a second helping of intellectual cake! If that's your idea of a mistake, then you're on the way to sainthood, or something. As for the present puzzle, wow. That sort of filling-in-space puzzle is utterly unintuitive for me which is one reason it's such fun to watch someone solve it who both enjoys it and does it effortlessly. Made for a lovely hour after dinner with a crunchy scallion pancake and a glass of wine.

My first yin-yang puzzle, the break in kind of reminded me of nonograms :D Also it's not particularly helpful until the very end, but on top of thinking about the minimum number of cells for the 26 down clue, you also can think about the maximum. That lets you shade in r8/9,c1 as green and r8c2 as grey early on

43:05 for me. i was slowly progressing and then saw a guessing opportunity, so without getting stuck i took that guess and it was correct. looking at where i guessed, i was just a little step for doing the same thing lol.

@47:40 You could have got it 10 minutes earlier when you checked if the 15 clue was 2 or 4 grey cell. The 7 of column 5 was always in box 8, so the 7 clue could not be a single grey cell.

You were slow spotting the pair of 7 clues had to include a single cell 7 and a multi-cell 7, and if the single cell was the top one, it would trap green. Therefore R4C1=7, and R3C1/2 are grey, leaving green a way out via R3C3. One lovely bit of logic I found was the way the 7 and 12 clues in row 3 interacted with box 3 (this was before any digits or pencil-marks in R3, but 24569 had been placed in box 3). Whichever two digits made up the 12, one of them went into R2C9. This meant that the 7 couldn't be 16 or 34, so had to be 25, ruling out 57 from the 12, leaving 48, with the 8 also going into R2C9. This left 137 in R3 in box 3, and a 6 and 9 in the remaining green in the row. At 41:00, the 15 clue at the bottom has to extend to four cells. If it didn't, it would be 78, which would leave the 14 clue at the top with a maximum of 345 to fill it. Your unified thirteens hypothesis can be easily disproved. The existing run can be no longer than four cells, so you'd need three greens in a row, which would create a 2x2 with the greens in R4. You need a run of at least two to make up the other 13, so R5C2 must be shaded, and to avoid a chequerboard, this means R5C1 must also be shaded. The digits and pencil-marks already placed mean it can't be 67, 58, or 49, so it must take a third cell. The green cells in the row are 9 in C8 from the earlier 7/12 logic, and a 37 pair. The thirteens have to be 814 and 256. I can't understand why you didn't extend green around the SW corner much earlier on (it was one of the first things I did). It had to be at least three cells at the bottom of C1, which put a grey into R8C2. You had a 124 triple in your 10 clue for ages. That gives you the 3, puts 4 in R6C9, which makes R4C5=6, and stopping the 256 option for the left-hand 13 clue. You really do make things hard for yourself. I always approach a TNC puzzle with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. They're usually very interesting, but often quite challenging. This wasn't too bad; I don't feel beaten up, and there was definitely some nice logic going on.

(26 clue got short shrift generally, that troublesome area at bottom left could have been much more easily resolved by noting 45-26=19, which means the bottom 3 cells of column 1 are green since you need at least 3 cells in a 19 sum and applying the perimeter rule tells you everything in the column that's not in the 26 sum must be green)

I solved yesterday's puzzle today and I noticed your mistake along with the comments pointing it out and I'll say it doesn't really change much in the rest of the puzzle. I got very stuck with the seemingly nothing being resolvable until I saw you put 5 on the end of the arrow which lead to 1 being the other number on the arrow and adding up to the wrong value of 6. AFAICT that's the only way to disambiguate the puzzle, but maybe you'll find something more clever Simon! Looking forward to the video.

Simon seems to make heavy weather of this one, I finished it in 35 minutes which didn't feel especially quick (although I know he didn't actually start solving until 15 minutes into the video!). Around 56:00, an easier question to ask is "what is the maximum number of cells in c1 that can be shaded for a total of 26?", which leaves the bottom three cells as unshadeable straight away.

52:36 you can resolve the 14 triple in c5 without the 15 clue's 6; there is no way for r3c5 to be a 4 because then the two cells above it have to add to 10, which they can't do by sudoku because they see 9 (ruling out 1+9), 4 (ruling out 6+4), and 7 (ruling out 3+7), and 2 and 8 from box 3. So r3c5 is forced to be 8, resolving the 48 pair, and making the two above cells sum to 6, which can't be done with 4 and 2, since the 4 is already placed in box 2, can't be done with 3 and 3 by sudoku, so must be a 15 pair which is resolved by the 5 in r1. I realise this is likely obvious but I spotted it a minute ago and I feel much cleverer than I usually do watching these solves :P

I think Simon is a little rusty after taking time off. 57:00 kind of a miracle how the lower left coloring worked. Yes, it is amazing that other 19 in column 1 has to be more the 1 cell long in green.

As soon as you get that the r9c1 is green you can green the two above it because 9+8 is only 17 and you need the greens to add to 19, you know by the only two runs around the outside that there aren't extra greys, so you also get that r8c2 is grey to avoid a 2x2.

The bottom left which Simon finally resolved after 57 mins was pretty well resolved at the start when C1 always had at least 3 greens at the bottom. Also the two 13s in R5 had to be different from very early on. I’m missing stuff Simon sees clearly but he often misses stuff which I find obvious. Strange.

Here is something I really do not understand. Before you even start the puzzle you explain in detail, that the edge of the grid has to be one sequence of green and one sequence of grey exactly. So because of the 38 and 26 clues in the top left you know immediately that if r1c1 is green, you have a maximum of 3 greens in r1 and a maximum of 5 greens in c1 and the rest of the edge must be grey; but if r1c1 is grey than a maximum of 8 cells in r1 and a maximum of 6 cells in c1 is grey and the rest of the edge must be green. Still you never ever use that for c1 despite it being the base for your cracking.

Unless I'm totally missing something, and because its now come up twice and Simon hasn't mentioned it, in Florian's puzzle, at that spot, there is a 9 in a blue cell. So I think that means Simon can make several known blue cells 9. Which must help a bit, no?
