Red Tail Ring performs their arrangement of the traditional ballad, The Blackest Crow, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This tune is recorded on their album, "II. Mountain Shout." www.redtailring.com
Pardon my ignorance, but this sounds like a tune the artist at the time years ago (I believe, Doc Watson) called Hick's lament, about a circuit riding preacher (Rev Hicks), who, while out on his circuit of meetings, got caught in a deadly winter storm AND became sick nigh unto death. Then he wrote the song to his wife, believing they would likely not meet again, this side of heaven. But he did survive & got back home. Any thoughts you may have are most gratefully received. FINALLY figured out the guitar chords, including that beautiful last verse! I'd be happy to email anyone interested. On second thought, whoever plays guitar probably has already figured out the chords, since it's pretty easy to see on the video.
Wow. That's such a moving rendition. So deeply beautiful in a time when so many folks seem to feel compelled to play old-time tunes at breakneck speed.
This beauteous melody resonates with the strings of the heart. A heart having been parted wide open with the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. The pining lyrical ballad of the lover to their mate that they are ne'er to see again. A haunting verse; the beauty in the pain. So well done you two, I look forward to seeing you live in the near future.
