I read that line as a beautifully dark reflection on the war's legacy of rising confederate sympathies and reactionary racist movements that dominated the south and are still felt today. That long shadow still hasn't been undone to this day.
@sceleratis3578
@sceleratis3578 9 месяцев назад
@@kylehart8829 More than that, its a reflection of war's legacy all over the world. Similar inescapable cycles in Bosnia, Palestine, Afghanistan, Nagorno-Karabakh, Chechnya before and Ukraine now, so on and so forth. People and societies struggle to move on, and things go unaddressed. This pain is terrifyingly universal.

@@kylehart8829Very poignant. I'm usually *very* shaky when it comes to anything involving Confederate stuff in music. But I respect that the lyrics did not try to decorate them in a heroic or mythic light

This is the most affected I've been by a song in a long time. It's perfectly bittersweet, and show's the Civil War era South in a way I'd never seen before. Not making excuses, not playing the victim. Just showing the cost of violence through the eyes of innocents. Those who's minds are still full of dreams, despite it all. I feel for these children more than I thought I could. And the way the lyrics suddenly stop, leaving only that gorgeous instrumental. Chills. Please make more music. You're all one of a kind.

It would seem that way from the lyrics, but the animation would seem to reveal that the kids are in the union. The kid is holding a union flag and the city was pretty industrious, which wasn't all that common in Southern cities during the civil war. Been questioning the disconnect between the two a little bit, but it's a great tune.
@AidaBenk10101
@AidaBenk10101 3 года назад
@@NeillGuitars pretty sure that's the Stars and Bars (csa), and the south had industrial towns/cities, just not to the same extent as the North. And side note though I'm not particularly sure how to articulate this, but the song is pretty clearly a southern one both musically and lyrically. I haven't ever been able to find anything about it online, but there's a certain sense of "Southern Sorrow" that persists even today from the aftermath of the Civil War. Not to bring any sort of justification either way, but a lot of innocent people suffered during and after the war, and we continue to feel it today. The south was already behind Industrially/economically in 1861, but the war set us back easily another 50-80 years. Add in a good deal of bitterness, spite, and poor planning, and that leaves us in the situation we're in now. The city im in had an unemployment rate of more than 25% for males my age before covid. I have nothing against people from the North, hell I even family in Ohio, Maryland, and elsewhere, but I wish there was more understanding for what the average,working class people here have to endure just to make it, only to be stereotyped as stupid, ignorant, racist, inbred, ect. It hurts sometimes, and I really wish we could all put aside our preconceptions and treat each other as human beings instead of enemies to overcome. If anyone actually reads this, I just want to say that I love you, from the bottom of my heart, and I hope you find happiness in whatever it is that you do

@@LeightonsLibrary Agreed. Earlier in the song, it describes the setting that the animation ends at. I'm on mobile now so I can't easily relisten and type the lyrics as I hear them but sings something about them together, him hesitating to touch her and, like you said, the candle flame going out. I think the lyrics cut off and implied the word "beat." Again, I can't listen again easily at the moment to say exactly what the final lines were but "beat" would have rhymed and made sense given the following instrumental.

Gorgeous beyond belief. I have your music saved in a playlist of mine labelled "The Romantic March" -- not for love, but for the artistic tradition, packed to the brim with emotion and leaving little room for anything else. It's populated mostly by this band; there are some similar folk songs there, but nothing sweeps me off my feet with the same fullness and beauty as your strings, your brasses, your woodwinds, and your incredible lyrical precision. "The hate that drove us from our homes will drag the living back" ... man. It's vivid. The animator knocked it out of the park as well. I don't know how involved you were in the imagery and symbolism, but it's piercing; that blasted, cannonball-like sun, the defending soldiers and citizens running, and the actual cannonballs dancing in the sky, waltzing around, a kiss before the impact, the flashes of wartime scenes in the dark, the tender, timid, unfinished gesture at the end... I am struck through. All that this team does, I am in love with it.

As a member of the deepest part of the American South you can ever get to, I've just gotta say that, of all of the songs I've heard over the last 2 decades, this is perhaps the best one I've ever heard. Not just in melody and singing, but the clear instrumental inspirations being rich with the subject matter, not to mention such a unique and invaluably needed subject to cover, as one of the vital part's of America's history that's rapidly being forgotten and decontextualized.

Thank you so much for adding such good captions. I just read them closely for the first time, having listened to this song for years. But for some reason, my eyes almost erupted with tears when I saw "A life as sweet as Candy" with "Candy" being capitalized. And the beautiful cut off before the word beat simply broke my heart. I keep coming back and coming back to this song and I really think you guys may have created the most special song I've ever heard. I hope that doesn't sound too silly or maudlin, but every few weeks I re-obsess over this song and the wonderfully detailed and meaningful scene of intimacy amidst the end of the world. No matter how many times I listen, I still find myself at the edge of my seat with this story, remembering the times I felt in the same shoes. And the choice to have the music video set just before the events of the song? Genius. You people are brilliant. Thank you for a perfect piece of art.

I don't know how to describe it but the balsting company's music is so special to me. It started with over the garden wall from well... overthe garden wall. Seeing someone recognize my instrument (bassoon) was just something I've never seen before. Then there is prelude, the pastorale style just made so much sense for its placement in the beginning of the show. Additionally adelaides trap is fantastically written slowing and speeding down, it really helps to picture a scene. The entire album, sketches of the unknown is amazing. And then there's candy, I've probably listened to this song about 100 times. Although the song is about the civil war (I think do correct me if I'm wrong), it reminds me of marching band and the end to a season, bittersweet memories. All and all I just wanted to say that I just love this music.

I think the wonderful thing about this song is that no matter who I show it to, my mom who likes Spanish pop, my dad who likes old country music and aggressive Spanish music from the 60’s, to even my friends, they can all agree that the emotion that hits with the blast of the instruments once the cannon ball smashed into the house, is heart wrenching. The way they fall silent and watch the music videos, and don’t really know how to respond afterward is an experience that I have only witnessed through this unique, fantastical song.

Candy took me down Candy took me down Down to her cellar Down to her cellar We sat in candlelight Drinking her father's wine Sheltered in darkness Cold earth around us That's when the union came In veils of stormy rain She talked about her pa How she watched him in awe Preaching the Gospels She was delightful We heard the thunder fall Damn near break down these walls The bottles ringing Us two just sitting Outside the cannonballs Came screaming through the squall She took to crying then I watched the candle dim And curl and shudder Afraid to touch her And as the flame went dead Dear God I felt her head Rest tired upon me Just breathing softly Outside the city burned Lord it was hell on earth As darkness swept aside That breathless candlelight I felt her breathing And I started singing "Soldiers they will come and Soldiers they will go The war may lay the lot of us In rows of granite stone And if I join the cavalry and Perish far from home A life as sweet as Candy I may never live to know Cities they will burn And families will crack The hate that drove us from our homes Will drag the living back Limping from the darkness With our hatred in our tracks A long and lonely shadow That can never be undone" But Candy is asleep In darkness and in peace And my heart fills the silence With its happy little...

I listened to this song a long time ago now but I've recently come back to it. It's more relevant than ever now, with wars plaguing the Middle East and Russia with Ukraine. I'm getting scared of what's going to come of it, I'm so scared. I'm not part of either of those nations but it doesn't mean I don't feel sick to my stomach whenever I hear about what's going on. I pray it'll all be over soon. This song feels like a testimony against what's going on nowadays, even though it was made three years ago now. I wish politics weren't so complex, we're all humans aren't we? So why do we fight each other? I'm aware of the complexities of both those wars I've mentioned but wouldn't it be so much better if no one fought? I feel like a little kid now. I feel desperate for those people, dying, losing everything, losing their humanity. This song, though melancholic, gives comfort to me even though it's about war. May there be peace for those who've died at the hands of war and violence

@BlastingCompany
@BlastingCompany 4 года назад
I didn't write the words (my brother Justin did) so I may not be qualified to answer this but yes it is definitely the American Civil War, although I'm pretty sure it was really inspired from his experiences traveling in ex-Yugoslavia and hearing people's stories from that civil war.

I'm horribly late but this is genuinely one of my favorite songs I've heard to date. The progression of the music is absolutely stunning. The transition in feeling at both 2:40 and 3:56 never fails to give me chills, and it keeps the song progression fresh all while maintaining an achingly bitter-sweet tone to it.

I’m a history teacher and this is beyond touching, it’s very important to humanize and understand the “bad guys” in history, even the confederates. Is this song based off a particular series of events/stories etc, I would love to know more. If you could provide more info or sources to research, i’d deeply appreciate it. (Just to add and make clear i’m no Southern sympathizer or apologist for the slave system, but as a historian I understand the responsibility we have to every perspective)
