I'm french and both sides of my family fought in the front lines. One of my great grandfather was a captain and barely survived a gas attack while rushing to put his mask on (left permanent scar on lungs i think) he vividly wrote the terror of the germans emerging from the smoke and the chaos that ensued. He was captured and placed in a german POW camp and actually had wrote down the German treatment of them was respectfully and honorable (unlike the nazis that would come after). He even drew a pretty detailed map of the camp, for what reason,to escape or not, we really don't know but its a nice drawing. I think it was my great grandfathers brother, but he unfortunately suffered severe shell shock (PTSD) and life was extremely difficult for him to do day to day tasks. His marriage that was planned before his service was called off when he returned as he was such a state of disarray..pretty sad really

My great grandfather fought in ww1 and my grandpa says he came back just fine. He was over all neutral to it all other than the feeling of it was his responsibility to have done so. One story he liked of his dads time there was how one night they were shooting artillery towards their position, and one landed so close to the trench it blew the tent cover away from where they were sleeping in the trenches, and a bunch of people panicked and started running, and my great grandpa just went back to sleep thinking it was probably safest to stay where he was, plus he was absolutely exhausted

I had 2 great grandfathers, that due to their thankfull young age endet up being double veterans. One was rather short, not yet dwarfism, but what happens, when you're a rural outta there farmhelper + mining teenboy. His top height was 1,58m. This didn't give him ANY bonus points beeing in a charging infantry line, but the slightly more "prestigious" position of sapper / tunnel digger. Also being short helps in that case, that the enemy is spotting everyone, before they see you. He was a heeeaaavy drinker, due to his post war job leaving him enough "free time to think" when not beeing at home with the wife (who was bigger then him) and his son (who was DEFENATLY bigger then him). But thankfully not shellshocked. But mostly always tired and somewhat scrawny, no matter how much he ate. And he had an appetite, that would put a nowadays american to shame. He died peacefully, but for sure, never talked about the war, which turned bad for his son.

The other double vet coped the loss of two world wars, his potential second child who gotten to the sixth day and then called it a life (RIP lil Grunkle Leopold), the missed opportunity to join up a little settlement in chicago city, still looking for a properly staffed honorable drugstore keeper and his dear wife just 2 months after the war that dragged him back out of the homestead for a second time, he became a bit of a Dr jekyll and Mr Hyde. If the day was good, he was a hard working drugstore keeper with two employes, security for the shop (two trained sweet german shepherds, they where slightly smaller back then). The dogs kept good care of his wife and daughter, while he was out, while also keeping the snooping noses of party brownnosers off his ground and bookshelves. Just WW1 alone created a hidden monster, who can scare a teacher to almost death just from speaking, after his daughter came back home with a ripped ear, due to her teacher discipling her too hard. Who said after the invasion of poland was emergency broadcast on the radio, that if he knew the godamn godlost Nazi Fat Cats where dragging his families asses into an even bigger obscenety of humanity, he'd taken the next ship to New york and then earn tickets for lil Ruthie and grandé Thessa. He was later a rather silent recluse after running his bigass shop. retiring a made man with a merrily wed daugher, but no wife and no doggos. Still good company, but seriously despizing his "In Law comrades" coping mechanisms. But thats civillian class struggle below the ruling ceiling.

I could cite my grandfather, who fought with Partisans against both German occupiers and Croatian puppet-fascist state, which eventually landed him in German prison, thankfully not extermination camp. He was fond of retelling of stories and anecdotes from his past, even about how resistance worked and some funny cock-ups, his relationship with my grandma, who was also a part of resistance... really, any subject (especially geography and his pornography collection), but even as he recognised my interest in history, whenever I (or anyone else) would try to get him to talk about his war and prison experiences, or how it worked, he'd clam up. I'd understand not wanting to rehash the humiliating and painful things that happened to him, but he wouldn't talk even about the events. Again, after the civil war that broke apart Yugoslavia, although none of my friends nor family participated in it in the slightest, my then boyfriend knew several guys who had been in the war, and again, when asking about their experiences of the battlefront, they simply wouldn't talk about it, no matter how drunk, high... not a word about it would come out. The most I got from them was "I never thought I would be fighting for _that_ kind of outcome/country" (meaning, what former Yugoslavian republics, that became countries, turned into).

I don't think you need to describe every last gruelty from the movie in intricate detail to get your message across. I actually quite appreciate the fact that he doesn't show it or only describes it with very little detail. Because I found a lot of it quite disturbing and I'd rather not be confronted with it again.

You should. It's an excellent book. That movie sort of misses it's point by connecting his story to all these historically significant events. It's just the average, insignificant, brutal story of a German soldier who fought and died and it didn't really matter. Totally different story.

The 2022 film doesn’t do the story justice, and the peace negotiation scenes were not part of the original story as told.

Infantry attacks, helmet for my pillow, generation kill, with the old breed, and one bullet away are all great memoirs of various wars. Starship troopers is a fiction story but loaded with great imagery and messaging regarding war. I read all of them when I was in the military.

Lions of Kandahar, The Only Thing Worth Dying For and Sled Driver are also amazing books about war/high-level special ops stories

The Things They Carried is a really good novel on The Vietnam war

This movie sucks, watch the older one it is alot better.

While I liked this movie in its own way and felt it was a decent representation of how brutal war is, I actually prefer the 1979 and 1930 versions as they stay more true to the book. 1979 was my first version and probably my favorite out of all of them though. I feel you get a better background of the characters and you feel like you know them better.

I feel it was such a powerful scene and didn't know why they would leave it out. In addition, which version of the foxhole/frenchman scene did you like the most? It doesn't even take Google to find out, just knowing the basic details of the film + common sense would tell you this is a myth. If you did Google it you'll find 0 information showing that the film was recovered from Göbbles, rather you'll find plenty detailing screenings throughout the west all the way from its release until well after the war. Arguing that lack of evidence means it could be true is also incredibly foolish due to the overwhelming evidence suggesting it was never lost. Please, if you're going to be a history enthusiast I recommend practicing healthy scepticism for any grand claim, even more so when there's little support from cross referenced first hand sources

Yeah, I watched the latest version and was pretty disappointed. The plot doesn't follow the book much. It does pull in a few of the big scenes but it changes both the plot of the book and the message of it. The book and previous movies, to me, had the message of this is war. War sucks. It's brutal and indifferent. The latest version seems to push the message that the Generals and the Politicians are doing everything they can to make the lives of the grunts as awful as they can while they themselves gorge on the finest luxuries of life and complain if their croissant is slightly too dry. And yes, the ending is just awful. It expects soldiers to make a full frontal assault across no man's land during the last 15 minutes before the ceasefire. There's a scene where a whistle blows and everyone engaged in hand to hand combat just puts down their weapons. The only upside I can say is that it does show the terror of combat.

@@morganmcallister2001 Glad it wasn't just me. I've not read the book or seen the other two versions. But I watched this one and I never engaged emotionally with it at all. It was very well made. I would like to have seen the bit with the tanks on the main screen. But there was nothing to the main character. Who spent it all reacting not acting. Which isn't how you write drama. Don't think the time jump helped either. It's a four star film for me, but it's not one I'll ever come back to.

Finally someone who actually read the damn book.

I was so disappointed when Himmelstoss wasn’t in the film. Plus, the name of the novel is taken from the ending of the novel where Paul dies on such an insignificant day which was super impactful. In the Netflix film, it ends with a huge battle scene. Definitely the worst of the three renditions if you are comparing it to the book. Not to mention how they also changed Kat’s entire character and death alongside the dynamic of the entire group. A huge part of the novel was the relationship of the characters and how quickly it just went away. Here, there are no characters to speak of. You’re right, it’s a generic war movie, not All Quiet on the Western Front.

That’s not true. In addition to being American and very much less likely to be part of WW1, most of the cast of the 1930 were too young with most being just 10 in 1918.

You‘d be surprised at the number of German immogrants who were also WW1 veterans were hired for the movie. They didn‘t use US veterans because it was a story from Germany about a bunch of PBI up to their necks in the shit, and an American veteran would not know acting according to the regulations of the German field manual from a piece of strudel.

You could also watch the original 1930 movie. It makes some changes from the book that I think help make it a better antiwar story.

You can find All Quiet on The Western Front in some odd places. I found and bought a copy at a Dollar General being trampled on amongst all the crappy romance novels. I just needed a gallon of milk. I also found a copy starship troopers a few years later.
