What an awesome display of the flashes of light and darkness between or amongst the 3 adults. It seems. As if they were all 3 blind and took turns sharing a single set of the eyes

Very finely drawn…I have never read DH Lawrence. I certainly know of him. The writing is detailed, but not so much that it is overwhelming. he draws scenes and personalities with just the right amount. A most poignant ending. Thanks!!❤

Her husband was certainly Alpha . Even in blindness he recognized the facade of the other’s vulnerability of character weakness. He neutralized the threat and established his dominance. Not to intimidate the other intentionally, but to reassert and assure himself.

I suspect (but don't know absolutely) that this is the whole story. I haven't read much of Lawrence' works, but his reputation is that of a psychological author; inner workings & not so much of a focus on explicit plots in the outer world.

It’s not uncommon for short stories to end suddenly. And it forces us to think about what is the theme or the idea behind the set up. They are not meant to start like a novel does… beginning middle and end.

@@novascheller5957For me the beginning is the description of the inner life of each man in the story. The blind man related to the world thru touch; thru the love for his wife & touching animals (the cat & the big farm animals). The wife's friend cannot handle touch. The friend visits & may upset the patterns the couple has acquired. But the friend's powers of relating thru words are made secondary in the story. The story is entirely complete for me.

...and some novels from countries of the south do not even have beginning middle and end... what is the story's connection with you may be the question, whether short or ' novel'...

To my mind the "beginning" of this story is about the workings of the wife's inner life. The "middle" is about the inner lives of the men. We learn the blind man related thru touch. The episode w the cat & his love for his wife, his time w big farm animals. We learn the guest cannot relate thru touch. The "end" is the guest getting emotionally smashed because getting touched freaks him out so much.
