You might know Michael Oher as the subject of “The Blind Side,” the 2009 movie starring Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw. The film was based on the true story of Oher, a young Black football player, who gained a second chance at life after being adopted by white parents.
But Oher’s version of the story is a lot different, and it starts long before the Tuohys entered the picture.
In this interview conducted with our partner Unlikely Collaborators, Oher paints a picture of the crack epidemic in the ‘80s and ‘90s, a broken and tumultuous family, and a young boy determined to climb out of it.

About Michael Oher:
Michael Oher gained widespread recognition through Michael Lewis's book "The Blind Side" and its film adaptation, which depicted his difficulties in early life and time playing college football. After attending the University of Mississippi, he played in the NFL for the Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, and Carolina Panthers, winning the SuperBowl with the Ravens in 2013.
Michael has also written two books: I Beat The Odds and When You’re Back’s Against The Wall, which detail his struggles and successes in life, imparting wisdom on how to overcome adversity. Michael has also contributed to the book Blindsided, where he outlines his experience of early-stage CTE, how he walked away from the NFL, and his urgent recommendations to reform football and make it a safer sport.

I don't mind anyone claiming their narrative but not at the expense of others. I think the Touhy family was incredibly good to Michael and he has repaid them with nothing but ingratitude. I see nothing whatsoever they have done to deserve his attacks. I think they will be totally vindicated in court.

@@Richard-hv5hh Even when the Tuohys are totally vindicated, it still won't change the minds of his supporters. He will *never* be cancelled like the other liars and false accusers. (e.g. Jussie Smollet and Amber Heard) His lawyers knew perfectly well that all they had to do was to throw that word "conservatorship" out there, and the mindless masses would immediately see Michael as the victim... and the Tuohys as the villains.

@@PiePyeThe NFL has a number of other players with "ghetto-to-gridiron" back stories. Has Hollywood ever done a movie about them? NO The only reason the Blind Side film was ever made was because of what the Tuohys did. In fact, when 20th Century Fox first bought the rights to the story, they wanted Julia Roberts for the part of Leigh Anne Tuohy. When they couldn't get her *they shelved the project.* The role was that important. CAA sent the script to Disney... they turned it down. Finally a year later, tiny Alcon Entertainment buys the rights from Fox. That film came a breath away from never being made at all.

I do dog rescue. The cruel things I see humans do to each other is multiplied exponentially when it comes to how people treat other lifeforms, our brothers and sisters in Nature. Until humans can treat ALL life with respect and at least TRY to help them live in the best circumstances possible, I don't believe there is any hope of us helping the homeless, elderly, disabled, disadvantaged, or those simply in need, to the point of being healthy and happy. People you take into your life, kindly even call them your own child, accept the social embarrassment they can bring, and then have them turn on you after years as if you never did a thing! I think that is the case here. I see nothing that the Touhy's have done other than to try give someone a better life. If I am right it sets race relations and foster parenting back because who wants this ingratitude and aggravation.

No... it's not. It's pretty close to the book. I'm SO sorry Michael, that the Touhy's did not adopt you and said they were. That is lying. So is setting up a conservatorship just to skirt booster rules for their alma mater..that was also lying. You could of been just as successful at any college. You are a survivor and an honorable man. God bless you and your family of choice that you have created. I'm sorry that the Touhys with all their blessings could not of chosen the right thing in adopting but maybe in the long run, you are better off. I am truly saddened by any additional pain they caused you despite how they did provide what they did ( which was easy to do financially for them ). I'm sorry they did not look out for your financial interests and legal interests for your rights to your likeness etc regarding the movie. This was also unfortunate. They could of hired better attorneys to negotiate on your behalf since that was their responsibility as conservators. It is truly disappointing despite all the good they did. You go be happy and blessed. You are God's chosen son ❤ and biological families are teachers in earth school and not necessarily your soul family who you find later. God bless you for the rest of your days ❤
@aldoabruzzi6417
@aldoabruzzi6417 10 месяцев назад
- He CLAIMS they said it was like a legal adoption. They CLAIM they never told him that, and merely said it made them his "legal guardians". Neither one can prove what words were used back in 2004, so at this point it's nothing more than a 19 year-old "he said/they said ". - The conservatorship was done to keep his college choices open and let him take his sweet time deciding where he wanted to go to school. In Michel Oher's own 2011 book he says they were a family even BEFORE they ever went to court.... so how is making their guardianship legal to satisfy the NCAA red tape in any way considered "lying"? - They DID look out for his financial interests. They just proved that in court on November 8th with all that evidence they provided. - If you read Michael Oher's 2011 autobiography, it makes perfect sense why adoption was probably never really on the table: _"There was just one condition for living with the Tuohys, and this had been made clear to me since I first started relying on them: They wanted to make sure I was going to keep a relationship with my birth family. At no point did they want there to be any kind of a feeling like they had taken me away from my mother, or kept me from her and made me cut all ties."_ He goes on to write about them insisting he visit her regularly, Sean giving his mom a job at one of his restaurants to try and keep her off drugs, bringing her to his football games, buying her what Oher calls _"a nice church dress"_ so she could come to senior night and stand with him out on the field _"as the seniors were escorted out on the field by their _*_parents_*_ "_ Hmm... insisting he not cut ties with his mom. Giving her a job to keep her clean. Bringing her to his games and buying her a dress so she could stand on the field with pride as his *MOTHER* . Oher's *own words* from 2011 make it clear that he fully understood that the Tuohys RESPECTED the relationship he had with his birth mother and likely would have never hurt his mother by adopting him away from her. They were probably sick over the fact that they had to ask her to sign over the *legal guardianship* of her son to them. Michael Oher should read his own book and stop casting doubt on their motives.

The Blind Side was about the white family (commercialized, consumerized, and whitewashed) as a “white savior story,” The Michael Oher’s story is much more compelling. But that would be too right, can’t make it look like Blacks can be successful with just a little help. What’s really sad is the family denying him as a son, which it seems he was in the movie. When I saw it, I was like “ Wow! They’re going to share their wealth with him? At least some of it. That’s wonderful.” But, greed is insatiable, it can never be satisfied. They weren’t giving up anything. They felt like they helped him enough, and saw a very subtle way to use him. And they did. In the end he was just another black boy to them.

Actually, if you read his 2011 autobiography, he makes it pretty clear that his college choice was entirely his own decision. Did the Tuohys *want* him to go to Ole Miss? Absolutely. But did they pressure him or force him in any way to go there? Not according to him. If Michael was 5'5 150 pounds, he would have never left the Hurt Village projects. The only reason Michael ever met "Big Tony" Henderson was because Big Tony showed up at his mom's place to *recruit him* for a basketball team he coached. He met Tony's son (Steve Henderson) AFTER he started playing hoops for his dad. So if he wasn't already tall and athletic... no Big Tony... and no Briarcrest School. The conservatorship was not created to *violate* NCAA rules... it was created to obey them. And that's the ONLY reason they created it. If Michael Oher would have made his mind up earlier that summer and picked some school other than Ole Miss (Tennessee, Oklahoma, LSU, etc.) the NCAA would not have had a problem with it. The Tuohys would have never created the conservatorship... it wouldn't have been necessary. Would they still call him their "son" and would he still call them "mom" and "dad"? As he says in his book... he already knew they were a family.BEFORE they went to court that day.
