I was 12 years old when in 1980 I kept nagging my parents to allow me to go see a movie because Princess Leia was in. They allowed me to go see it on my own... And from the very opening notes of Matt "Guitar" Murphy droning that A# and the section coming in The Blues Brothers changed my life. I took a hammer to m piggy bank that very night and bought the soundtrack the next day. I took up guitar lessons a week after and to this day 40 years later I'm still playing the blues. So thank Carrie Fisher for taking that role, without her I'd have become a square.

Belushi and Aykroyd DID do great things together. The “Blues Brothers” got their start on Saturday Night Live as a skit. It was so popular they took it on the road and even recorded several albums. ‘Rubber Biscuit” was one of their hits. Aykroyd said he wanted to do this movie and get as many old time blues musicians as he could in it before they passed. Just to remind folks just how awesome they were. Cheers

Someone may have mentioned it but the mall they filmed the chase scene in had already permanently closed and the production crew actually put most of the stores together just to shoot that scene. It was called the Dixie Square Mall.
@Rodshark75
@Rodshark75 Год назад
Ironically, after they filmed the scenes and were done, the mall was bought and renovated and re-opened lol
@LogicalNiko
@LogicalNiko Год назад
@@Rodshark75 The mall was never really used after 1979. Except as dug den, gang turf, and a favorite hangout for homeless. There were attempts to use the property for a few years but all failed. In 1985 a police station was constructed on part of the lot, but they ran into discovery of massive foundation issues. The mall was actually the mall was in the ownership of the local school district as they used it for schooling in 1979 when the schools were finishing construction of a new building which went over schedule. That summer Landis leased the mall, staged all the shops (which were vacant and had minimal signs). Then they left it partially destroyed (cleaned up, but with the signs intact, most of the storefronts having been knocked out, and the floors heavily damaged). The district sued for excess damages to the property, but then later dropped the case. The city of Harvey abandoned it, and it was left to rot from 1981. It became a crime/gang den. At least one documented murder was committed there, but there were believed others (police finding bodies there was not unusual). In 2006 some contractor tried to deal with the place, they demolished one department store but that just made more structural issues in the process and abandoned the rest of it. In 2012 Illinois State and the City of Harvey were actually able to use federal relief funds from Hurricane Ike (is a very convoluted way) to demolish the buildings.

Dan got John interested in blues music. John wanted to do a bit performing a blues song on Saturday Night Live. Lorne Michaels said they couldn't do a musical number, they booked singers. They could only sing if it was a sketch. There were be costumes in the wardrobe closet, so they created the Blues Bees and that was enough of a sketch to make it in air. The audience loved the performance. John and Dan created The Blues Brothers and started performing in clubs around Chicago. Now that they were a musical act Lorne let them perform on SNL. They released a couple albums. Then the idea for the movie came up.

"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses." "Hit it." Fun Fact: The line "They broke my watch!" occurs three times in the film, each time spoken or voiced over by a policeman on the losing end of a car chase with the Blues Brothers. Music Enthusiast Fact: Some performers were not used to lip-syncing pre-recorded songs, standard procedure for movie musicals. James Brown ended up singing his number live with a recorded backing (the rest of his choir was lip-syncing). John Lee Hooker's performance was recorded live at Chicago's Maxwell Street Market. Aretha Franklin's performance is cut together from many, many takes, using the parts where her lip-syncing was actually in sync. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The Bluesmobile is a 1974 Dodge Monaco. The vehicles used in the film were used police cars purchased from the California Highway Patrol, and featured the "cop tires, cop suspension, and cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant" mentioned by Elwood in the film. A total of twelve Bluesmobiles were used in the movie, including one that was built just so it could fall apart. Several replicas have been built by collectors, but one original is known to exist, and is owned by the brother-in-law of Dan Aykroyd. Dodge Monacos from 1974-77, including the upscale Royal Monaco, especially those which came with the A38 police option, are now considered collector's items. They have been used as replica Chicago P.D. and Illinois State Police cars, including Bluesmobile tribute cars. This has led to the scarcity of this generation of Mopar C-bodies, leading some replica squad cars and Bluesmobiles to use the Plymouth Gran Fury or Chrysler Newport instead. Universal Studios Hollywood has a replica Bluesmobile on the lot; it's a 1974 Dodge Coronet, since the Monaco has become so rare. A world record 103 cars were wrecked during filming. The Junkman (1982) broke the record 2 years later, wrecking 150 cars and a plane. That record was held for 2 decades, until over 300 cars were wrecked during the filming of The Matrix Reloaded (2003).

One was already brought up: Joe Walsh was the prisoner who jumped on the table and started dancing at the end. The other two are: Chaka Khan as the choir singer they focus on a couple of times in the James Brown church scene, and I'm pretty sure that's Harold Ramis in an uncredited non-speaking cameo when all the cops and soldiers rush in to the state building and ask the two guards if they've seen two guys dressed in black.

There's a small comedic irony in the relative characters of Kathleen Freeman - the "penguin" and Jake. In this film she's a nun shocked at his use of obscenities, but in "Dragnet" the roles are reversed. He's the uptight Sgt. Friday threatening to cite her - a foul-mouthed witness - for repeatedly swearing at him. Pier 1 went bankrupt and all stores were closed by the end of 2020. The mall itself was shuttered but redressed just for the film then abandoned.

Thanks very much for the reaction. Some trivia: The Ray Charles outside dance was done in freezing weather, but people made it look like summer. The car was supposed to have magical properties due to a large magnet above the garage. Dan Aykroyd wrote a very long screenplay, but it was edited down a lot by Landis. The Blues Brothers was a musical skit on Saturday Night Live in the 1970's. This is Aykroyd's backstory for the band. Paul Schaffer was the band leader on SNL but couldn't be in this movie. The stunt crew leaders had to prove the Ford Pinto was airworthy and wouldn't sail in the wrong direction before they dropped it.

jameshenner5831, actually, the stunt folks had to prove that the Pinto was NOT airworthy, specifically that it was not aerodynamic.....it needed to fall straight down, but the FAA was concerned that it might tip to one angle and glide a bit sideways, hitting the ground in some unintended area.

This movie was essentially a love letter to the rhythm and blues community in Chicago in the 70's (60's, too). Cab Calloway. Matt Guitar Murphy. Donald Duck Dunn. John Lee Hooker. Aretha. James Brown. Ray Charles... the movie was soooo full of musical and acting mega-stars that you see someone new every few minutes. It just goes on and on and on. Just a hoot and probably my favorite movie soundtrack of all time! Thanks for doing this one...

In 1980, Carrie was briefly engaged to Canadian actor and comedian Dan Aykroyd, who proposed to her on the set of their film The Blues Brothers. She said: "We had rings, we got blood tests, the whole shot. But then I got back together with Paul Simon."

I watched them film that bridge scene when the car back flips and the Nazi's drive off the bridge. That scene was filmed here in Milwaukee. At the time, construction of the Hoan Bridge access ramps hadn't been completed and was actually stalled for a while. Landis wanted to use our bridge to nowhere for the scene. Aykroyd and Belushi weren't here though, only the stunt crews. Still fun to watch. Took a bunch of pics. The white building in the background as the Bluesmobile flips at the time was the First Wisconsin Center, named for the bank on the first floor. Today the building is called the US Bank building and all the ramps to the Hoan have long been completed. Saw this in the theaters almost 20 times when first released and well over a hundred by now.

Just so you know: pretty much EVERYBODY that Jake & Elwood interact with - who isn't Carrie Fisher, or an Illinois Nazi, or the Good Ol' Boys band, or a cop - is a MUSIC LEGEND! Either they are headliners in their own right, or they're some of the best studio musicians ever...and that includes the Blues Brothers' Band, too.

I always feel old when I see a reactor who doesn't recognize any of the musicians in this movie. Good thing they list them at the end. You already recognized some of the non-musician cameos, like Frank Oz and Paul Reubens. The woman in the gas station was 60s supermodel Twiggy and the guy in the sauna was Steve Lawrence. All of the band were well known session musicians at the time- Matt "guitar" Murphy, Donald "duck" Dunn, etc. They've all played with the who's who of rock and blues musicians. The mall chase scene was, at the time, the most expensive scene ever filmed. They found an abandoned mall and fixed it up and filled it with stores, then proceeded to destroy it. And, only because you brought up the French Connection chase scene, I heard that was done without permits. They just set up their cameras and filmed, then left before the cops showed up, so all the "extras" you see are real people.

No, the sequel Blues Brothers 2000 destroyed one car more at 105, but there's quite a few movies with more now: Matrix Reloaded destroyed 300, and one of the Transformers movies is over 500. That said, I don't know the number for actual "crashes on camera" vs "destroyed during filming".

The mall chase scene was filmed in one of the most infamous dead malls ever, Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Illinois. It was pretty much a dead mall at the time and was being rented by the Harvey School district when the movie was made. The mall sat abandoned, decaying, and partially burned for over 30 years after the movie was filmed before finally being demolished.

I saw this on its opening Friday, and is one of the most memorable nights of my life. A friend and I had driven from Portland to Seattle to compete in the Friday night bicycle races at the velodrome, but they got rained out. So we headed downtown looking for something to do. We saw the marquee at the Coliseum Theater, and got in just in time. The theater was packed and raucous. We had a great time. It was a few years before I became a real blues fan and understood just how important all those musicians were. The Blue Brothers set me off on my blues journey. My first blues concert was John Lee Hooker. Sadly I never got to see Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles or any of those other legends, but I have seen BB King, Etta James, Albert Collins, Pinetop Perkins, Charles Brown and many others.

The driving through the shopping centre scene was shot TWICE, you can see the skid marks as they drive around. The shopping centre was disused and they restocked it and smashed it up twice. It was the most expensive comedy film ever at the time.

For 2 years, this movie had the record for most cars trashed in a movie at 104 cars. Amazingly, no one was apparently injured filming the climatic chase scene, although Belushi did injure himself riding a kid's skateboard just before filming the concert! The record was broken by The Junkman which destroyed 150 cars and a plane 2 years later. The record is currently held by Transformers 3 at 532 cars (coincidentally also filmed in Chicago)
