Over the course of our species existence, we have noticed many diseases that come from foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria, but also those that hide within our own genetics. As these non contactable illnesses have been allowed to continue, we have attempted to fight them every step of the way. In the events of Deep Blue Sea, we are on the cusp of solving Alzheimer's, well a piece of the puzzle anyways. As a group of scientists use the Shark brain to create a protein humanity can use, it has an unintended consequence of making the sharks more intelligent. But how would this work exactly? Lets discuss that in todays episode!

Clarification: the team didn't choose to feed sharks to the sharks. The humans somehow learned that the sharks would eat nothing but other sharks so that's what they had to feed them in order to keep them alive. I could not figure out how they arrived at the conclusion that the sharks would only eat other sharks.

Not to write the story for the writers but maybe they started off with more sharks in each generation and found out they would only eat each other and figured they would try sending in other sharks as food

@@Marcara081 And you obviously didn't watch or pay attention to the video, because it's pretty clear just from the chosen scenes that the sharks are constantly changing size to fit whatever the scene requires them to be. The movie's creators played very fast and loose with shark sizing because it wasn't intended to be analyzed in this much detail and survive the scrutiny. It was just supposed to be another horror movie with sharks.

I recall a friend calling a nurse shark he worked with at the aquarium " Basically a water wolf. It's capable of being trained on a very basic level, will seek you out for attention like a canine, but can also if you make one wrong move horribly maim you. "

From what I've heard and researched, nursing sharks are the best type of shark to keep as a pet. They have a reputation of being very docile in the Florida Keys, to the point a diver out there told me they would pull them away from lobster dens without the sharks putting up a fight. Actually during our vacation there my brother ended up catching a young one (it was released safely) and our friend that was handling it remarked on it being docile and not overly freaked out about being handled. We've managed to get more than three thirds of the way through domesticating foxes, I'm starting to wonder if we should look to the wolves of the sea for domestication. Dolphins and whales are not good ideas, one side is too big and best left to its own devices, and the other is scheming and crafty to the point of committing many of the same crimes as humanity.

They have actually fully domesticated foxes. A group of Russian ( I think) scientists did it. They took only the most docile foxes and bred them. Then from those batches they again only bred the most docile. Rinse and repeat. The foxes from those experiments wag their tails around humans, etc. Their fur patterns have even started changing to patterns you’ll NEVER find in the wild.

@@alexanderglass2057 First off: we cant tell how far we are into domesticating anything. Second: three thirds, is 100% numb nuts. Third: it takes thousands of years to fully domesticate an animal. We are nowhere near having domesticated foxes, although we are making progress.

iirc nurse sharks (and the majority of shark species) are actually too small to do life threatening damage. they absolutely could take fingers and toes, but unless they get a major artery they probably won't kill you. also great white sharks get a lot of undue crap as they're usually pretty chill and don't like the taste of humans. they only bite people because their eyesight is horrible and they can't tell what tastes good until they take a bite. fighting back usually causes them to back off. The really dangerous ones are bull sharks and black tip reef sharks, which have a habit of going goblin mode when you fight back, ripping people apart, even if they don't actually eat them. take this all with a grain of salt because it was years ago when I did this research so I might be misremembering.

From a filmmaking standpoint, they had Sam Jackson's character get eaten by the shark out of water because they wanted to give the audience the impression that no-one's safe. If you saw a big name actor amongst relatively unknown actors, you're immediately assuming they're surviving.

@@KillerChrono666Nowadays that's the bulk of it, but following Jaws's release there were mass killings that were celebrated around the world as great deeds, for several years, and even to this day killing a shark is seen as a good thing by the public. Something that isn't really reflected in virtually any other predator on the planet. People mourn when a bear needs to be put down, regret having to kill a lion, even a rabid dog is a huge shame, but killing a shark is reason to go get a beer at the pub.

Sharks can pick up on blood, but what really attracts them is motion in the water. Their bodies can feel motion just as far as they can smell blood. She could smell her blood, but felt that someone was swimming towards her and was a potential threat while she was trying to break through the fence.

Nah, the thrashing is super important. Sharks can detect blood, but they are drawn into flopping and splashing of dying or stressed fish. Sharks are the oceans garbage disposals. Mark Rover has a really cool video on sharks following blood trails and it informs sharks but it's not a huge huge motive for them.

The fact that test audiences demanded they kill off Susan because she literally caused this whole mess by making hyper intellegent death sharks will always be hilarious to me. Like yeah she is doing this for a good cause, but at the same time, she chose sharks. It could have been literally any other animal, but she chose sharks. She deserves that.

Because the whole point was because sharks are immune to Alzheimer's disease due to how their brain is structured, so they altered them to grow their brains to be larger so they can take more samples.

A fun fact about sharks. They are also extremely resistant to disease and their ability to heal is as close to wolverine levels as fish get. Bastards can swim away from a motorboat propeller shredding their back and so long as they don't die the blood loss they can heal up to just about as good as new. Freaking scary if you ask me. Edit: I appreciate all of the people trying to list things that are not fish as if they are fish. Makes me wonder what biology classes teach these days that so many people can't identify what a "fish" is.

The male anglerfish are notably smaller than the females, and they do not use the same bait females do to hunt. They are constantly in a search for females to mate with and have evolved in a sort of a parasitic life partner to them. When a male anglerfish encounters a female, he latches onto her using his sharp teeth. What happens next is quite fascinating. As time passes, the male starts to fuse with the female physically. He attaches to her skin and bloodstream and begins to lose his eyes and internal organs. Eventually, all that is left of the male is the testes. A female usually carries around six males on her body, although there are cases when it is even more than that.

I remember reading about the life cycles of anglerfish. The switch from separate organism to parasite is both interesting and distinctly horrifying. I could be wrong but anglerfish are unique in that they have the greatest size discrepancy between male and female.

I think the demon fish missed Carter on purpose in the wet-lab. It was trying to herd the survivors to flood the lab and the room Carter escaped into was non-flooded, thus furthering their plan. Also, only one of the second gen female shark was over 45 feet long, the other two males were smaller. As for the scientific knowledge you covered, I am in no position to question. You're videos remain awesome, hilarious and insightful and I am always super pumped to see new content from you!

Used to love the ocean as a kid. But once on a trip to Bali we were snorkelling about one of the small islands off the coast and I wasn’t watching where I was swimming looking at the fish, all of a sudden the nice tropical water became very cold and I looked down and the sea floor had just gone vertical straight down into pitch black. I had never been more terrified in my entire life looking down into the abyss with scattered fish and other creepy things and one very large, I am guessing sail fish. I immediately swam back to the shore faster then I have ever swam before and in nearly twenty years I’ve never gone too far into the ocean ever again.

Flying a helicopter is, first and foremost, a balancing act, and the winch was mounted slightly off to the side and above the center of mass. Imagine that you are lifting something that is to one side of you. Now imagine that, instead of standing on nice solid ground, you are balancing on top of a large ball. You CAN still do it, but it ain't as easy as you think. When the cable was pulled, it pulled that side of the helicopter down slightly. Tipping the helicopter to the side causes it to fly in that direction. The pilot now has to figure out exactly what the heck is going on, compensate, and then apply power to pull away.

The first gen sharks were larger than normal size but not half the size of the 2nd gen. The 2nd gen was larger because a result of enlarging the brain was growth of the shark. Which explains why two of the sharks could get in the facility easier.

My malamute could open door handles easily, then she figured out how to open door knobs-- yes, door knobs-circular bulbs, with her mouth. Maybe the hyper intelligent shark figured out how to turn the door hatch wheel with its mouth? That would have been hilarious to have in this movie. Like it's so silly at the end when the giant, final shark sniffs the water for Sarah's blood, literally looks like a cartoon character smelling the wafting aroma of a pie.

I was a film student in high school and when my film teacher was trying to shut the class up, he would say “SHARK BAIT” and we had to respond “OOH HA HA” instead of clapping or counting or whatever. Okay, hear me out, the fear of the open ocean is a completely rational fear. Even the strongest Human swimmers can only swim for a day or two without succumbing to tiredness and then drowning. The fear of the open ocean has probably kept humans alive. Anyways another thing to think about; Humans have no natural predators, or much reason to fear the open air in daylight. We can comfortably take a stroll outside during the day. Sure we COULD get mugged or whatever but the likelihood of that is relatively low so long as we stay in familiar territory. This is probably how sharks feel when swimming around.

Mako's aesthetics are much cooler than a Great Whites. Longer pointer face and nose, teeth jutting out in all directions, much larger black eyes. The sharks look a lot more menacing than like Jaws with it's beefed up Great White. Best thing about the film is because of that little changeup.

Partially explained by the fact whites and makos come from the same family, mackerel sharks. Mackerel sharks are also some of the only fish to have evolved metabolic endothermy (or at least something close to it) that they can switch on and off.

iirc, dolphins will also deliberately attack puffer fish to make them puff up and then gently jab themselves on the spines to get high on the toxins, even passing a puffer fish around the group like a blunt. then there's the whole CIA Dolphin Experiment from the 60's. dolphins are straight up psychopaths when they're not performing for treats. @@RoanokeGaming

The sharks in this one is one of the most iconic monsters in films, they move with such ferocity and looks truly sinister and menacing, a mix of speed and smarts, shows you really they are super intelligent rather than natural predators and actually enjoys toying with their preys like serial killers. Second best shark film ever after Jaws IMO.

40k is a special case. The machines grafted onto humans would rot and decay if a techpriest doesn't administer spiritual maintenance. Hyperefficient antibiotics on a dripfeed would be child's play. 40k is very interesting, as all the Empires' computers are biological and human in origin. Even some door lock security panels are still living human skulls, physically 'programmed' to react with certain stimuli. Typing machines- human servoskulls. On board missile tracking systems- disposable living biological processing servoskulls. All machines have souls more or less, and have to be tended to by prayer or they'll at best stop working, at worst become corrupted and possessed by daemons. 40k is just lovely, ain't it?

This can also be Gender Dimorphism. Believe or not, Shark Females Can Be Bigger than their Male Partners! This is true for Great Whites, and true for some of the Predatory species. And these fictional Makos basically take up those genetic properties.

When I was a kid, I went through a phase where I was obsessed with creature features like this. Jaws started it, but then there was The Beast about a giant squid, Lake Placid...some other alligator movie that was so bad I haven't bothered to remember the name...and of course, this movie. Which is also pretty bad, but in a way that keeps you coming back. As a kid it shocked me a bit that the "final girl" didn't make it, but she was also and awful person and this was all pretty much her fault and it's all just kind of amused me more and more with age.

And some of the effects of the giant alligator they built were really damn good. And that movie freaked me out when I was a kid, especially the part at nighttime where the giant alligator was chillin in a swimming pool at a house and a kid gets pushed off the diving board by his "friends" into the pool with it and gets chomped!

Your story is eerily similar to why I don’t swim in the ocean anymore. During hurricane sandy the waves were super big and my father asked if I wanted to go night swimming. Even at sunset it was bright enough for me to see an absolute FUCKING UNIT of a shadow swim under me. I set records hitting the beech. I’ve never once swam past chest hight water since.

I had a mythology teacher in college who was a lawyer. She had no other credentials for teaching that class. She treated us like kindergartners. At one point she said that humanity is getting increasingly stupid and cites some study that shows our brains are shrinking. She said that this is why we are becoming dumber, and each generations brain is getting smaller. She was an awful teacher. The brain getting smaller NEVER JUST MEAN we are getting dumber. It could be a lot of complex reasons. The CPU the brain of the computer and it's like 2 by 2 inches. A smaller brain might just mean it's getting more efficient at storing information.

An interesting note on the Ocean Gate thing; there's a RU-vidr named Thunderfoot who suggested that if the sub sank due to a small hole rather than explosive decompression then the passengers would have died due to the air in the sub being compressed to the point it was no longer breathable. That or they died of hypothermia.

They had her survive in the original screen tests and the audiences were so frustrated that she survived that they changed it and reshot what they needed to have her get ate and the crowd loved it. Her getting ate and Sam Jackson getting ate are two iconic deaths from sharks in my mind. Like who's Jaws? These sharks were what I was afraid of when I was younger.

The reason they put the Tiger shark in the tank with them was because the genetically altered sharks would only eat other sharks. I think they explained it before they put the tiger shark in the tank. They tried other food like tuna an other fish but the Smart Sharks will only eat other regular sharks for some unknown reason.

True story: the Vikings used to take Greenland sharks and eat them. But the shark's flesh is so poisonous, even a tiny bit of it will kill you. What the Vikings did was bury it in the ground for several months, let it ferment, then dry it and eat it. It smells like cleaning fluid.
