Welcome back to Tyrrell's Classic Workshop. This episode delves into the fascinating world of the Aston Martin DB4, a vehicle that holds a special place in Iain's heart and has a fascinating history.
Iain shares stories and the unusual background of how the current owner came to buy this specific Aston Martin DB4 as he walks us through his personal adventure with it. Both history fans and car lovers will enjoy the fascinating stories about the car's restoration journey from the past to the present.
Pete and Iain discuss an electrical issue that has been giving the owner some headaches in this week's nerdy content. Iain tries to explain the difference between an alternator and dynamo; can he succeed in front of expert Pete?
Iain delves into the rich history of both the DB4 and its successor, the DB5. While the DB5 is famously known as James Bond's car, the DB4 paved the way for this legendary association. Iain explains the origins and progression of these cars as well as the fascinating backstory of this lesser-known Bond car.
As always, Iain takes this beautiful machine out for a spin. Join him on a road test as he evaluates the performance and driving experience of the DB4, capturing the essence of what makes this classic car so beloved by enthusiasts around the world.

It’s great to see a DB4 getting some love, I’ve always thought they were a special car and look fabulous even under the shadow of the DB5. It’s even better to see a car with a back story like this, to a car person they evoke memories that nothing else, except for perhaps music, can do. Thanks for another wonderful video Iain, and good to see Pete included in this one. It’s great to meet the people at Tyrrell’s Classic Workshop and see their particular skills and what that brings to the business.

What a car. This front is looking so much better than the later DB5-style, where the headlights always seem to be placed too low. And the sound of a big IL6 is just the best. Thank you so much for showing this. Wonderful.

just for info the Miura in the background is one of my favourite supercars. I saw a lime green one with all the trim in matt black outside a garage in Mansfield. I spent ages just looking at it, I believe it was the then boyfriend of Twiggy the model, maybe someone can confirm it, it was around 1966, one of the first.

My personal favourite. My Grandmother was the house keeper at Sir Davids residence Durker Rood House, Meltham Huddersfield throughout the 1950's and 60's. Occasionally Sir David would either collect or drop her back home in his personal DB4. As a child we would stay in the house while they were away for long periods, the outbuildings and garages housed Astons of course. Great memories.

My uncle drove me to school in a Mini Mk1 in 1970 (in Germany). Guess what's in my garage... when I heard that his uncle took him to school in that car, I got a little emotional and could totally understand the man. Even in the Mini you felt like a king, not to mention the driving characteristics... How that Aston nephew must have felt... absolutely amazing!!!

The very first Aston Martin I saw as a schoolboy in the 1960's was a pale metalic blue DB4, very similar to the car in this video, only it was a convertable. Up to that point the only sports cars I knew were Healeys, MGs and Triumphs. It was like something from a different planet - the most beautiful car I had ever seen. I still think the DB4 with the unfaired-in headlights is the best looking road car Aston Martin ever made.

@@martinhitchman4101 The first car used in the film was not just a DB4 Series 5 made to look like a DB5 it was actually a DB5 prototype. Exactly it was a DB4 Vantage Series 5 born as an experimental design prototype/development car and modified into the the DB5 prototype with chassis number DP/216/1. It was the 1963 London Earls Court DB5 Motor Show car and shown in Autocar in 1963 as a DB5. This was a special car, and not just a DB4 made to look like a DB5 like in the case of DBS used in The Persuaders made to only cosmetically look like a DBS V8. A second back up car was used for filming which was actually a DB5 with chassis number DB5/1486/R. This car did have a 5 speed ZF gearbox. There were subsequently 2 further DB5s used for promotional purposes, not used in filming, which were chassis numbers DB5/2008/R and DB5/2017/R.

Excellent photographic restoration history on the metalwork. It’s important that you discussed the Alternator vs dynamo comparison. I love any car in green but I’m glad you returned it to its original hue. For me, one of the most attractive things about a vintage Aston is that gorgeous binnacle and instrument panel. When everyone else in the UK were using wood veneers, Aston were doing it in leather- very decadent! Being a Jaguar man I would be interested to know how the two straight sixes stack against each other. I know that the Aston unit produced a lot of more horsepower.

Yank here, the thing about that car, yeah its Bond, in a way.... but it was *fit* for Bond because it possesses intrigue. There weren't many cars constructed like that, a little Italy here, a little England there. It's stately, its performance, its lines, all of these things together make for a shape that *evokes* car passions. It's exists today, because it simply does.

Among the many things I admire about this channel (and I've been a subscriber for years now) remains the way in which Iain (exemplifying the habits of many of his countrymen) treats a cyclist not as an obstacle as much as an opportunity to further explore the dynamics of whatever car he's operating. Here, at 23 mins 20 sec, he has to slow to 15-20 mph due to a pair of cyclists and then wait behind them for second after second after second until the road ahead is clear and he can enjoy letting that powerplant once again do its thing. My fellow Americans, you have a lot to learn in this regard.

Lovely Aston, remind me of a car a family friendly who was a basically one man restoration and collision repair shop. He'd pick up some collision and light work while a long term restoration or 2 was in his care as space/time allowed. One car that was in with my Corvette was a DB5 or DB6 which had spent considerable time under a oak tree with acorns falling on it. Someone was paying handsomely to form the aluminum back into shape. Quite a rare car especially in the Southern USA. He also had a real Cheetah. and a BMW 3.0 CSL race car come through the shop when I popped in.

Nice to hear you mention your experience in Franchoek, South Africa. I'm local, and visited the museum with my friends in the humble MX-5 club just a couple of days ago. Such a special place! The Aston is glorious. Highly recommended for anyone. And the museum is surrounded by our best wine farms.

Timeless design, always had a soft spot for this era of Aston Martins. That in-line six sounds superb.

David Brown's gear business was around long before the tractors came along. It started around 1860.
