I'm 79 years old and a former US Navy man who spent 2 years before the mast. I cannot overstate how much I love this project and these videos; they have enriched my life for 7 years and I'm still grinning like a mule eating briers every time I watch a new video. Congratulations to Leo and the expert crew. Keep up the good work and thank you for all the enjoyment I have received over the years. It's been a privilege to have witnessed the evolution of the new Tally-Ho!

@@Silentnite85 On big sailing ships the officers had quarters at the rear of the ship. And seamen usually slept between the decks in the middle and front of the ship. So 'before the mast' refers to seamen instead of officers.

I watched the entire casting of the cap and all the Keith Rucker Vintage Machinery Videos. Unbelievable. Keith Rucker with incredible accuracy in machining was great! The capstan was a way bigger project than I had imagined.

Anyone who has worked with 100+ year old machinery can assure you it will ALWAYS be a bigger project with more technical challenges than expected. Keith did a fantastic job, it was a pleasure watching him work out solutions to each problem as it arose. The world needs more people who approach things this way, gives me hope that we aren't all slipping into a throwaway mentality.

Watching Dave make the pattern for the top of the capstan, Clarke and his struggles to cast the capstan top, and then Keith doing all the complex machining to make room for the gearing to make the capstan both manually operated and mechanically operated, was quite the project. I think the restoration of the capstan was a little more involved than Keith originally anticipated, but he got it done. Would love to see those guys go for a sale on the Tally Ho one day.

Keith's ability to explain the "why's and how's" of what he was doing really kept me engaged, as I would have otherwise felt lost in the project having little to no machining experience. It was a great watch.

I spent a couple of days in Port Townsend last week, and got to see Tally Ho in person. She is extremely beautiful. Leo is a very lucky guy to have been able to inspire so many people to fund his dream, and to have had the access to so many incredibly talented craftspeople.

Leo, I was in Oban, Scotland this week and saw a beautiful and huge yacht in the harbour and went over to have a look. Upon looking up the boat information the first video that popped up was of you sailing her - it was Adix! I had seen this video previously, but I didn't quite appreciate your prowess as a sailor until I saw her in person. I didn't think you could impress me more! Tally Ho is looking beautiful and I'm so excited to see the adventures that are ahead.

Oban is one of my favourite places on the West Coast of Scotland and I try to visit it whenever I can, I like to use it as a launching platform to visit all the islands rather than driving up the coast, the seafood is amazing as well.

I watch Acorn to Arabella as well and there is a stark difference between their DIY approach and Leo's wall to wall professional everything. I don't know if it's a Pacific VS. Atlantic thing or what but Arabella has been about a year since launch and it is not only cramped and cluttered but the entire boat looks like it needs to be hauled out and refurbished. The hull is especially grimy which has to be costing them knots and fuel. Acorn to Arabella makes me feel like anyone can do anything if they are healthy, have the funds, and put their minds to it. Tally Ho on the other hand reminds me of that painful difference between things done, and things done right. Both are great examples though.

So glad the new prop worked out for you. I work for Ford Motor Co, in Michigan, just north of Detroit at the Sterling Axle Plant, we make all axles for F150, Explorer, we make the front and rear axles drum to drum when they leave our plant, 1.9 million axles last year. My department laps the ring and pinions, you load the ring on an arbor, push the pinion in it`s arbor, when you hit the start button, the arbors chuck the ring and pinion, the door shuts, and compound starts flowing on the ring and pinion as they are spinning at 2,000 rpms. Three passes on the drive side and 3 passes on the coast side, it`s a 3 minute cycle, when the door opens, that ring and pinion is married, the surfaces of the teeth are perfectly matched to each other and it stays a set for life.Just a little foot note from the Auto Industry that`s alive and well in Michigan.

I think it was Uffa Fox that coined the phrase “if ahead Red and Green perfect safely go between “ Mind you, one night I was coming into the Needles Channel with a following wind, when I was faced with the ‘Round the Wight by Night’ fleet tacking out, you might imagine 50+ Red or Green lights becoming Green or Red. I held my course and let them sort it out, all was well!

A quick prop reference for anyone wondering what "it's" all about. I bought a sail boat-33'. It had a 3 blade fixed prop; no folding, no feathering. Great under motor. Bad under sail and for racing; too much drag. I changed it to a 2 blade folding prop; far cheaper than a feathering prop. I lost some of my racing handicap points, but it was way better under sail and great for racing, especially in lower winds. It worked great under motor going forward. The biggest disadvantage was going in reverse under power; for docking. Very little control and I would have to rev the motor a lot higher just to get the job done; whether it was against the tide or the docks; this proved inaccurate and dangerous; made better with practice. In hindsight, or my budget was different, I would have gone for a 3 blade feathering prop. I tell "you" this, because nobody ever told me................. DD

With electric motors and regen possibilities it gets even more critical and complex. .. generally though the props need to be larger with more blades and thinner more efficient shapes.. What's really needed is adjustable pitch props that can be completely feathered for sailing or reversed for regen Or reverse..😉 and it all comes down to hull speeds and motor issues. I would still have fitted a line cutter or prop cage to keep lines or floating debris ot of the prop arc. Diving on the prop or rudder of a larger heavy boat even in a swell is dodgy especially if it's dark and the waters cold.

In the mid-1800s, when steam power started getting taken seriously in naval circles, screw-driven steam ships had two major issues. One was range and a lack of places to refuel (re-coal, actually, since oil firing wouldn't start gaining traction for another half century). That meant a warship, meant to cruise for long distances, had to have a full sailing rig in addition to its steam engine and screw. Which, in short order, revealed the second issue. If you stuck a prop on the back of said warship that was big enough to provide useful speed, it exerted so much drag that your speed under sail dropped well below acceptable levels. What to do? Most designers of the time resorted to a prop that could be disconnected from the shaft and lifted up, on rails built into the sternpost, out of the water when sailing. When steam power was needed, the shaft would be rotated to the proper orientation, the prop would be lowered onto it and locked in place, and the ship could then maneuver under power. Not the best solution, and there's a pretty hard upper limit on how much power you can put on a setup like that before it tears itself apart. But the steam engines of the day weren't that powerful, and by the time the tech had advanced to make them that powerful, most nations had coaling stations established along their trade routes, so an auxiliary sailing rig became redundant and eventually disappeared from designs. Interestingly, the retractable prop also helped drive the adoption of the elliptical stern, since the overhang over the rudder provided room for the lifting gear, and storage for the prop when it was off the shaft. Some early steam warships - iirc HMS Warrior is one? - still dressed up the stern with a flat faux transom and dummy windows to a nonexistent captain's cabin. The lack of a cabin with stern gallery windows was apparently anathema to many naval officers of the day.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer amongst all the happiness, but, as good as these vids are, I can't help but think the end is near. At least for this phase of the project. I've been here since day 1 and it must getting close to the team breaking up and people starting to go their separate ways. On the upside, any of the team members must be inifinitely more employable with Tally Ho on their CV, especially the youngers guys just starting out. Huge congrats on the 500k.

I don’t know the exact rule but I believe the inside of a sidelight box should be flat black or non-reflective. As an aside, several years ago I installed a 4-bladed Vari-Prop on my boat. Vari-Prop was excellent to work with. They even shortened the blades a half inch to give me a little more tip clearance. Tally Ho looks fantastic. Congratulations to you and your crew.

Leo, like many others I've been with you from the beginning and have never missed a video. I have never kidded you about your hair but you gotta stop smiling all the time, from a distance it looks like your throat's cut. :) I'm 91, retired USAF, commercial pilot (general aviation) and I did play around with several sail boats in my younger days. I have a MaxProp feathering prop on my sailboat. Make certain to have several spare cap anodes in inventory. They can be hard to get when in somewhat remote places. I needed one when having a diver clean my hull. I thought I was screwed when the anode was pulled and in bad shape. I was on a deadline to make a weather window, to cross the Gulf Stream. I would have missed my window waiting on that anode. Luckily, my wife saw some in a cabinet from the previous owner's purchase and saved the day.

Great video as always. Just one minor detail regarding the feathering prop: it's not centrifugal force that rotates the vanes into their "engaged" setting. For this type of prop it's internal gears that are driven by the torque of the propshaft itself. That's why the hub rotates when you move the vanes. There are also "folding" style feathering props that indeed use centrifugal force to open. These are simpler and slightly more aerodynamic than the gear driven type. Their efficiency under power is however lower, specifically in reverse.

I really can not judge which one is more difficult, hard work or patience. The Tally Ho crew have them both and they work persistently without overlooking any detail while working. You all are amazing. I am glad that the gear ratio problem was solved to your liking by replacing and adjusting the new prop. Leo's explanation of the situation was comforting too because the system will work smoothly and productively.

Hi Leo, I was watching the process of casting the drum of the capstan. It nearly drove me to drink! Maybe you could reference the Windy Hill foundry channel as well. Those guys went through all kinds of problems to finally get a good casting.

Way to go gal, 40 lights is a good deal of fussy, thoughtful work. Appreciate seeing your pipe and wire work. Making it clean and often needing to disappear is not easy on a vessel of this level and as the lights are something that is touched often, and in plain view.

Girlie observation: the engine RPM and gearbox-ratio/prop-pitch match-up difficulties are the mechanical equivalent of finding a bra that's both effective AND comfortable. I'm 9½ stone but roughly a UK NN-cup (it's all hopelessly vague at the wrong end of the bra-fitting alphabet), and gave up trying to find a decent commercial product years ago. I make my own bras these days, but I'm no engineer, and juggling static loading, vibration and dynamic oscillation with resonant frequencies and whatnot is a literal pain in the neck. One of these days there's going to be a support-garment version of the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse...🤪

You could check with handheld electronic tach from the marked fly wheel. I have found it to be very accurate. A good surveyor always does that in a sea trial.

Thanks for the explanation of what has been changed with the capstan. I've wanted to watch all of Keith's videos but just haven't had the time yet. I like how, in the second launching of Tally Ho, there wasn't any slow, suspenseful lowering of the hull into the water. Just drop her in, she's a known quantity in the brine now.
