The Bones Scene That Really Went Way Too Far

One of Fox’s most popular series, Bones brought forensic anthropology to the masses and successfully turned a scholarly profession into an entertaining endeavor, with beloved characters, humor, and - for the most part - respectful handling of lifestyles that fall outside of the mainstream. But there’s one episode in particular that truly dropped the ball.
Perhaps it’s because of Bones’ place in time. The show ran for 12 seasons between 2005 and 2017, and the world has changed drastically since the show’s early seasons. In the season 4 episode “The Girl in the Mask,” the squints do something that totally crosses a line. This is the Bones scene that really went way too far.

The main character is my favorite. The best way to "represent" some character's preferred "association" is the same as anyone would do with the an obvious male or female. All this ado about gender today has reached the ridiculous stage. When I was in college, decades ago, I knew a young lady who had made the transition (to female) and our of respect, I treated her as she preferred, and never exposed her. There is nothing wrong with being respectful, not even today.
@drmusketeer2388

Point 1: non-binary wasn’t even a thing, or if it was, it was a rarity when this episode came out. Point 2: the character was only in this one episode. Point 3: pronouns weren’t a thing when this episode came out. Bones ended with its thirteenth season in 2017 which means this episode came out in 2008, far before pronouns or non-binary became prevalent like they are today. Point 4: Bones was and still is one of the most progressive shows of our time. Season 3 introduced an openly gay man working at the Jeffersonian, one of season 4’s first episodes revolved around solving the murder of a trans woman, and, as a few comments have stated, Angela is revealed to be Bisexual in thus very season as she reunites with Roxy, her ex. You can argue that nowadays the moment with the Japanese intern seems in poor taste but for the time it aired, I’m sure some child out there was like, “wait, is that me?” Seeing someone so androgynous with little judgement of who they are is inspiring. And while the team at the Jeffersonian is constantly asking “what are they,” It’s never from a place of malice but from curiosity, which I’m sure everyone has had to wonder about some person in their lives.
@Jesus.X

Sorry but yes this did happen quite a while ago and they were trying to make the scene funny people weren’t shoving binary nonbinary in your face. Like today I really think everybody should just relax and be who they are and shush about it. Why is everybody taking up so much time caring about what everybody else is. I don’t want anybody to take up that much space in my mind. Very much more important things to worry about. Like why doesn’t everybody worry more about child sex slaves, drug dealers, murders. But all we talking about is peoples sexuality.I also believe in the episode they weren’t obsessing over it they were just trying to make it funny. Do you remember when things were funny. We’re not allowed to laugh at anything anymore without it offending someone. I think that’s ridiculous. The whole next generation is gonna grow up not knowing how to be a gentleman not knowing how to be a woman and not knowing how to have a sense of humor. It’s sadD

The only thing that came close to "going too far" in this episode for me was touching Tanaka without consent. And that's true of any gender. But in real life, it's very often instinctive and automatic for people to touch others. If you have a problem, it's also on you to specify it. You don't like to be touched - please don't. As someone born intersex, you get to be much less sensitive (and I imagine much more playful) about this than current "woke" culture seems to freak out about. People nowdays seem to INSIST that I tell them my "preferred pronouns". They seem upset when I tell them that's not about me, it's about them. Call what they see, and we can go with that. I know they're trying to be respectful and I acknowledge the gesture. They're just missing the point. I don't "prefer" anything because there's nothing to prefer. What we're left with is up to you. Like anyone, your understanding of me is subjective. Own it.

The actor was female. They artificially deepened the voice in post, and it was a good episode. Also, male or female, she had a 50/50 chance of getting it right, considering those other genders mentioned are as real as griffins.

Pronouns are your perception for thousands of years it’s been very simple, exterior plumbing, male interior, plumbing, female and yes, there was a very, very, very, very very small percentage of people born hermaphroditic. Most of them passed away during or before puberty.

It’s nit so Out There ! It’s something that many go through every day ,coming up against /meeting someone that just does not show a form of either sex and it puzzles many ! It’s a norm and should not be be shone up one as for its natural for people to be puzzled in this situation

I thought she was Japanese since she had the common trope that is a streak of blue dyed hair indicating that she is fact a Japanese character.

It wasn’t disrespectful. I had no problem with episode. What is disrespectful is how Hollywood cares more about influencing people to become numb to male and female genders and the strategic push to "see nothing, say nothing" on the public. If one asks, then it violates their rights. If one doesn't ask, then we accused of denying their existence or preference. How does anyone possibly win? I remember that if a Black person had 1 drop of Black, they were undeniably and uncontestably "Black". Now everyone in Hollywood and social media feels that is a Black person is light complexion and has curly hair, it is their business to identify their ethnicity. There's no pure ethnicity with the exception of Africans in the remotess parts. Point being now everyone is obsessed with who is Heterosexual, Homosexual, Bisexual or Fluid.

Japan is not more forward, sure they got progressive people that are very accepting but they got conservative people that still think homosexuality is disgusting. Same as us, and just like how in some things it's better like violence safety, in some its worse like their xenophobia and SA.

Nobody cared in 2009 about this. You can't judge a show that at the time society deamed appropriate. Do better Looper!
@ey144

A couple of things: The thing is that Japan really isn't accepting of LGBTQ+ rights. Please look at the recent news in regards to the government's views on same-sex marriage. Sure, there are people that are progressive but please note that there is a huge difference between choosing androgynous fashion and someone who self identifies as non-binary. It might be related, but it doesn't necessarily mean that someone who wears that fashion is non-binary and vise versa. I don't think the world was as aware to addressing what one's pronouns at this point in time. It's a crude attempt at a joke. From what I remember, that character was known for doing crazy shit like that, but it's SA whatever way you look at it. Attempts like that are interesting to me that does age the show to the what was deemed as appropriate during the time it was broadcasted. I was a huge fan of Bones while it was airing, but since I was in middle school during the earlier seasons, a lot of these moments flew over my head. I have a vague memory of this episode but this moment for whatever reason I had no recollection of until this video. I don't think I fully registered what was going on in this scene, which was why it never stood out, but I think any normal adult would register as inappropriate either way you look at it.

This is because this problem did not exist at the time of the show. This whole gender pronouns are relativity new. You can't judge a show based on what was acceptable at the time.

Its easy to judge but west and east plus now and than are two different thinks. Keep always open minded but when you jump out of the loop dont be affriad to say sorry. You can not turn the switch in a life time this takes time.

This is a different time and I always thought it was a woman. It was to help the androgynous acceptance Angela was interested and it was something new to her. How it was played out. Growing up in the 90s , guys that want to be women were drag queens. You weren’t down the middle. You either like men or women. Wanting to look both is confusing SNL already covered that with Pat and Chris.

Seriously?!? At the time this show was filmed and shown, non-binary/non-gender/whatever-gender wasn't really a thing. So to go back to 2009 and expect them to handle the situation the way it would be in 2023 (fourteen (14) years later) is absurd.
@steveswangler6373

the episode aired in 2009, when not even the most liberal of liberals (myself included) even really had an opinion on nonbinary. instead of being critical of an episode from over a decade ago, how about celebrating how far we've come, while acknowledging how far we need to go. i mean hell, in 2009 we were just celebrating our first black president, that took 230 years of presidents. we can't expect society to change overnight on gender and pronouns.

If anything, Bones was egotistical and extremely arrogant. In reality, she probably would not be where she was in the show. Excessively condecending, too. There are episodes i want to yell at her.
