Lyrics:
By yon bonnie banks an' by yon bonnie braes
Whaur the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
Whaur me an' my true love will ne-er meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.
Chorus
O ye'll tak' the high road, and Ah'll tak' the low (road)
And Ah'll be in Scotlan' afore ye
Fir me an' my true love will ne-er meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.
'Twas there that we perted in yon shady glen
On the steep, steep sides o' Ben Lomon'
Whaur in (soft) purple hue, the hielan hills we view
An' the moon comin' oot in the gloamin'.
Chorus
The wee birdies sing an' the wild flouers spring
An' in sunshine the waters are sleeping
But the broken heart, it kens nae second spring again
Tho' the waeful may cease frae their greetin'.
Chorus

I am Portuguese but I did live in Scotland for 4 years, I have to say they were the most amazing and happy years of my life. For a guy used to the sun and the beaches it was hard to adapt to the scottish grey weather but everything else made for the lack of sun. Most amazing and nicest people in world always with a smile on their faces and willing to help you with anything. My wife met me after my time in Scotland and she keeps asking me to take her there cause everytime I mention Scotland there's literaly tears falling down my eyes. I am portuguese but my heart belongs to this amazing country and nation.

I was always told that the song is about 2 men who were captured by the British. One was to be executed (taking the low road) the other was to go back to his clan (the high road) to let them know that execution is the punishment for traitors to the crown.

My friend Alex was from there. He used to tell me about the beauty of Loch Lomond. He worked in Germany for over 40 years and he was the best friend you could imagine. Shortly after his retirement he died of cancer. His son found a will in a box. It said, When I'm dead spread my ashes around Loch Lomond.. So did his son. He was always a Scot at heart to the death. Unfortunately I couldn't go to Scotland with him. Now I'm sitting here, listening to this song and tears are running down my face.. I have to go there, I know that for sure.

I think a lot of you aren't aware of the story of this song. The song is about 2 imprisoned soldiers in England, 1 was to be beheaded, the other was sent back to Scotland as a free man. This is why the song goes, "you take the high road and I'll take the low", the low road is what we call being dead sometimes. The high road is over the hills. Then the next line is "and I'll be in Scotland before you" meaning he's going to be in heaven/Scotland. Its about the battle of Culloden in the 1700s. We sing it at weddings, funerals and any chance we can at parties. It's to let the English and the rest of the world know that we will always be free as long as we have Scotland in our hearts.

You forgot a small but important detail. This song was based on a story from the Jacobite uprising, in which the English soldiers were at times incredibly cruel. The part you missed was that the English soldiers gave a choice to the two captured the Scotsmen, that one would die and one would live. Then the one Scotsman gives up his life for the other to return back to Scotland alive.

@@musictherapychoir That's SO reassuring to hear from a music therapist, who must know these things. I choose to believe this. My late husband was a songwriter, and I've seen and read about the effect of his songs on the ill and despairing. A person in a coma came out of it after listening to his music, which she loved. Proud Preston, 1715. A great battle and siege. Some died, some lived. The lucky ones got to walk home on their own two feet, by the high road. The one's that fell were carried home - feet first - by the low.

I have read somewhere, that during Jacobite uprising of 1744, English did following to captured Scots: put them into pairs and tell each pair, that they should decide who of them gets shot and who will be released.

Currently a senior at Uni in Minnesota. I spent last spring semester in Scotland, and it was the most amazing experience I've had anywhere. I heard this song numerous times on the bus with the international society when we were heading into the highlands, and cannot help but think of everything I saw when I listen to it. There is no place more beautiful, more friendly, or more like home.

My nana used to sing this song for me but I never knew the title. Her father was from Scotland and would sing it to her as a little girl. She passed away a few years ago but one day I heard a band singing it and I was transported back to my childhood with my nana. Im trying to learn the proper lyrics so I can pass it on to my nephew

My mum was born in Scotland, but lived here when she was young. All of her side of the family is Scottish, I'm the only English born minus a few that moved to Canada. When I was young, I remember mum singing a few Scottish songs, and I loved how it felt like I was connecting to my ancestors, I agree with you, it is magical.

My principal retired 5 days ago after serving 14 years at my school. This is the last song that the entire school, including me, sang to him before his departure and it was one of the most emotional moments of my life. This was, in my opinion, the best song to send him off with after contributing to our school for so long.

As a kid growing up in Hawaii and my Boy Scout days, I used to play this magnificent Scottish folksong on my good ole Horner harmonica. In later years I sang this haunting, world-class love song during Karaoke outings, my friends went wild. This is truly one of the songs of our lives!! I was surprised locals that usually like Hawaiian and local style music really liked to her to hear this masterpiece by Valerie Dunbar -- please correct me if I'm mistaken..............

That reminds me of this time I was in a cab in Vegas, and I had a horrible headache from the heat but the cabbie wouldn’t stop talking the whole way to the convention. When I got out and paid the guy, I realized I should have just taken an Uber and saved $10 - but boo on me... anyway, I get to the convention and sign in and saw a guy I knew from Reno... we had a brief convo and I found my seat... turns out that guy was the motivational speaker that my work hired and he gave us his life story and how to overcome struggles. Long story short, after the awards were handed out, I took mine and went back to my seat and got belligerently drunk with a few other co-workers, and made jokes about the management the rest of the night... later that night, our plane was delayed, then rerouted to San Jose... a little wind... well after six hours on the plane, and a sore ass, I was finally home... I went to bed, and woke up the next morning with no headache! You might ask what this has to do with anything, and wonder why I’m saying it... The same way I’m wondering why you’re still reading it
