Why should Biblical literacy matter today? What happens to society when people fear public opinion more than God? Joining Michael Knowles in this episode of The Book Club is the author of the best-selling Bible commentary in America, Dennis Prager. They discuss the enduring relevance of the Book of Exodus, history’s most powerful story of slave liberation-and moral direction from God.

The thing that makes me like Dennis is that he always has a practical explanation for things. He doesn’t try to pretend that everything God did in relation to man had to have a majestic reason. We are a practical being because this is a feature of our Creator. The Rational Bible is a useful instrument for those who want to understand how God interacts with us, his creation.

Thank you for rich, deep, valuable conversation. I am 77 and thanks to my parents the Bible has always been important to my decision-making. God is real and we all suffer if we fail to listen to Him as Truth. Imagine this…I attended public school K-12 and every morning we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord’s Prayer, (prayer of a Jewish man.) No one knew of a school shooting and most walked home with no fear of danger.

I studied Mr. Pragers commentaries along with the Bible and Christian commentaries. It changed my whole perspective! I'm so grateful to learn about God's word from someone who knows the language it was originally written. English doesn't have the words to really explain the original meaning. Especially since the Bible was translated from the Hebrew to the Greek and back. Thank you Mr. Prager! I am so looking forward to the Deuteronomy commentaries.

Have you read Israeli archaeologist's Israel Finkelstein's book The Bible Unearthed who collects evidence that the exodus did not happen. The same with the conquest "“Remember those thirty one Canaanite towns listed in the Book of Joshua (plus four other towns on the other side of the Jordan River)? Sixteen towns were destroyed according to the stories in the books of Numbers, Joshua, and Judges. Of these sixteen, two or three maybe four cities show signs of violent destruction at or around the time when Joshua and his army would have been plowing through Canaan(thirteenth century BCE about two hundred years before the time of the King David) The towns on the other side of the Jordan River in Moab, don’t look like they were even occupied at the time. We also read in the Bible that twelve towns were taken over without a fight. But of those twelve, only seven were even occupied at the time, according to archaeological findings. And of those same twelve towns that the Bible says were not destroyed, actually do show signs of destruction. In other words, archaeology and the Biblical story don’t line up well at all” Peter Enns The Bible Tells Me So Digging for Answers, p.59. “

The only thing I feel a bit weird about saying people must dress nicely for church is that I feel like it excludes the poor. I would personally be ok with nice shirt paired with jeans. Hi Dean inUK, I fully agree with you. Also, I was raised on a farm and being a Baby Boomer (born 1950), dressing up for church, school (uniform), Boy Scouts, going "to town", etc... was important, it was a matter of respect. On the farm/ranch, we wore denim outfits (jeans) and boots all day - but going out, even crossing paths with the hippies, and the way Americans dressed (or lack there of), we always wore proper clothing. This was reinforced by our elders, the Church, schools, ... and military service. Finally, no one among us would try to impress or secure a date with a respectable girl while dressed like a slob. To this day, I still carry these traditions, so do my children. Peace be with you, Ciao, L (L inUSA).

I am new to the Christian faith. I purposely chose a faith based curriculum for my children when we started home schooling in 2018. Everyday I realize how much better my life, along with others, would have been if God would have been at the very least discussed and an optional class to take in high school. Men like Dennis would have been fun to listen too, which in turn would have turned up the curiosity dial to learn more. I pray many wake up and realize how important reading scripture and being a believer truly is. And yes, I do miss seeing men & woman looking dashing and beautiful just going to the store or grabbing a coffee as they did back in the day.

The Covid pandemic, despite all of the tragedies that all of us have experienced since early 2020, has resulted in some of the greatest blessings in my home. One of the greatest blessings was to read the entire Bible (both old and new) for the first time in my life. As a Christian, I came to the realization that I did not completely understand the New Testament. In fact, my understanding was shallow. I am grateful firstly to my pastor and church, but to Dennis Prager as well for pointing us Christians back to the Old Testament. As a result, my family and church now seek to observe all of the 10 commandments, including the Sabbath. It’s the most important shift we have made in our lives! Our lives have been much richer for it! Thank you Michael and especially Dennis for the book club review and for all you are doing!!! May God continue to richly bless you and your families.

When I first attended a Catholic mass, I was struck by the connections to Jewish Levitical worship I’d read in the Bible in the building space as well as the service. One example, the red candle Catholics burn 24-7 next to the Tabernacle holding the Eucharist is like the ner tamid, the eternal flame, burning next to the sacred scrolls (the written Word of God) in a Jewish synagogue.

Dennis is right about the state of art. I visited the local art museum some weeks ago, and one of the pieces they thought was worthy of display was something that looked like a weird catfish drawn by an eight year old when he wasn't paying attention in art class. The most recent paintings that had any realism and beauty in them were from the 1800s. The most recent religious art in the museum was from the 1600s. The most recent displays were a face made up of broken plates, a plain blackboard, and abstract shapes that obviously were not painted by hand. The most recent art was ugly, ugly, ugly. Their Facebook page recently advertised a display they said was inspired by the Renaissance, but it lacked any characteristics that were prominent during the Renaissance itself. I pointed that out in a comment, and they have not yet said anything.

I am a Sunday School teacher at an Independent Baptist Church, and our kids all have to know the Old Testament. I took my class through the entire Book of Genesis, verse by verse. We haven't done Exodus yet, but they have to know the Ten Commandments (not the nine), and the layout of the Tabernacle, and the golden calf incident. We are thinking to do Exodus. The kids will learn about Moses and the Ten Plagues, and the Passover. We bring an Afikomen in with matzos, and show how the middle one is broken and half hidden. We compare that to the three blood marks struck around the door. And we compare that to the crucifixion scene in all four Gospels. We are thinking to get a good quality Tabernacle model to show the kids. Three pieces of furniture are crowned: the Ark of the Covenant, the Table of Shewbread, and the Altar of Incense. Match that to 1Jn 5:7. We are hardly going to go through the exact specifications of the Tabernacle verse by verse. That we will have to summarize. The kids will learn about the priests' garments, and the breastplate, and what we can figure out about the Urim and Thumim. 😀 We haven't done Leviticus. We have done a few stories from Numbers.

On a side note, If you understand the Feasts of Adonai, you can see Yeshua in each and every Feast. It’s beautiful. Jew and Gentile are meant to be echad (one) in Messiah. It was always the plan. I love Dennis. But true knowledge of God recognizes Exodus as a spiritual book (not political) where God's incomprehensible holiness is made apparent, the law is given (10 commandments merely a summary) and shows how far short we fall. Solution is not to try to be better, but to trust in Christ (who is the fulfillment of the Law) for righteousness and justification before God. Truly trusting in Christ results in a change of heart that loves God's law and obeys it more and more.

The description of the exodus by Immanuel Velikovsky in his reconstruction of ancient history and the book 'Worlds in Collision ' is in my opinion the greatest work all Jews, Christians and all religions can observe

Pharaoh was himself venerated as a god. So the last plague, killing his firstborn and the future pharaoh of Egypt, was an attack on one of Egypt’s gods.
@princessglitterbutt5984
@princessglitterbutt5984 Год назад
rashi, a classic commentary, actually says that the first plague was an attack on their gods bc they worshiped the nile. i think its also him who says the killing of the fistborns was actually a targeted attach on the pharaoh himself bc he was a firstborn

@@princessglitterbutt5984 well, since he didn’t die, he must not have been the firstborn.
@princessglitterbutt5984

@@pettuspie they didnt die all at once so as soon as he realized the firstborns were dying he ran to find moses to tell him to take everyone and leave asap. theres actually a song based on this commentary that all children learn thats basically like pharaoh in pagamas in middle of the night, running around the jewish area asking where he can find moses and everyones laughing at him as they point him in all different directions

@@princessglitterbutt5984 well what does scripture say about it? Exodus 12:29: “29 At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock. 30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians. And there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where someone was not dead. 31 Then he summoned Moses and Aaron by night and said, "Up, go out from among my people, both you and the people of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as you have said. 32 Take your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone, and bless me also!" The Egyptians were urgent with the people to send them out of the land in haste. For they said, "We shall all be dead."

I have seen the movie The Ten Commandments by Cecil B DeMill 1950s version, but did not realize he also made a movie back in ( around) 1923. It is available on RU-vid. It is unique .I Also like movie by DeMill , King of Kings 1927(RU-vid) and the one he prepared for but did not live to make, King of Kings 1961 which is on dvd. I love the book of Exodus.

I'm the foremost expert in esoteric spirituality - Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Judaism. What's amazing to me is how exoteric and parochial Jewish and Christian conservatives are when it comes to religion. I've written a book on Christianity - "Electrical Christianity" - but from my perspective, the Hindu Bhagavad Gita blows away the Bible as a spiritual guide. What's also shocking to me is how almost all the politically astute conservative political pundits never move beyond normative, faith-based religion into true direct, mystical, or yogic, spiritual communion/contemplation, which is the tap root of all the major religions.

A majority of the Founding Fathers were devout Christians. They had their faults but they were human after all. God doesn’t demand perfection. He knows that it is impossible for man to be perfect.
