A Night At the Palladium: Dennis Prager - Happiness is Not a Feeling: It's a Moral Obligation
The Applied Ethics Institute and the 2012 Keith Goree Lecture Series presents Speaker Dennis Prager for Happiness is Not a Feeling: It's a Moral Obligation, at the Palladium Theater.
More about Dennis Prager:

About St. Petersburg College:
In 1927, St. Petersburg College (then known as St. Petersburg Junior College) became Florida's first private, non-profit, two-year school of higher learning located in downtown St. Petersburg. Full accreditation followed in 1931 and in 1948 SPC became a public college.
In June 2001, SPJC officially became St. Petersburg College when Florida's governor signed legislation making it the first community college in Florida to offer four-year degrees. On Dec. 11, 2001, the college received the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' accreditation to offer courses leading to bachelor's degrees.
In 2002, St. Petersburg College began offering courses leading to bachelor's degrees in Education, Nursing and Technology Management. The college's commitment to its two-year curriculum, which has earned it wide recognition and annually wins it high national rankings, remains as strong as ever.
Today, SPC has eight learning sites throughout Pinellas County and recently became the first college in Florida to offer a four-year degree in Dental Hygiene. This program's offerings augment its two-year program, which has been in operation since 1963. SPC added four-year degrees in Veterinary Technology, Public Safety Administration and Orthotics and Prosthetics in 2005.
College Accreditation
St. Petersburg College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associates degrees and to offer courses leading to bachelor's degrees in the following areas: Banking, Nursing, Business Administration, Orthotics & Prosthetics, Elementary/Secondary Education, Paralegal Studies. Educational Studies. Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification. Dental Hygiene. Public Safety Administration. Health Services Administration. Sustainability Management. International Business. Technology Management. Management & Organizational Leadership. Veterinary Technology.
SPC also offers access to junior and senior level courses for bachelors and graduate degrees at the University Partnership Center. The UPC partners with the University of South Florida, University of South Florida at St. Petersburg, Eckerd College, University of Florida, Florida State University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, University of Central Florida, Florida International University, Florida A&M University, Saint Leo University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Institute of Technology, Barry University, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Indiana University, and St. Petersburg College.

There's a song that I think summed up this man's philosophy perfectly. "Smile," by Charlie Chaplin: Smile, tho' your heart is aching Smile, even tho' it's breaking When there are clouds in the sky , you'll get by If you smile through your fear and sorrow Smile and maybe tomorrow You'll see the sun come shining thru for you Light up your face with gladness Hide ev'ry trace of sadness Altho' a tear maybe ever so near That's the time you must keep on trying Smile, what's the use of crying You'll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile

Yep. Ol’ Charlie was a great composer and lyricist plus being a genius at film comedy. And the Red Scare of the McCarthy era in the early 50’s drove him to go back to England then Switzerland never to return. He return in the 70’s as a old man to accept a special Academy Award then left forever. He was a man who could compose that and America rejected him. That led to today.

This was absolutely amazing! I'm generally uni-polar, aka, happy 95% of the time. It DOES attract people, it DOES improve my life and those lives around me. Such good advice. Is my life perfect? Absolutely not! If I stop and think about my trials, the things that hold me back, those around me that try to drag me down, there are many ... So what? I don't let those things define me. My grandmother gave me advice when I was young about trying to 'please' everyone, and it's so true. She'd quote President Lincoln (poet John Lydgate supposedly said this and later Lincoln adapted it), “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time." Life changing. YOU DO YOU. And if you listen to Dennis Prager's advice of just being happy, being real all the time, everything will fall into place. Love it! LIVE IT.

@ZakBellinger
@ZakBellinger Год назад
Being "real all the time" can just become an excuse to take others' happiness from them. Nothing wrong with not being 100% chipper all the time, but no reason to drag others down because there is always something that can be perceived as negative that one can complain about. One by one people will disappear from your life. Being inauthentic and not wanting to cause chaos in the life of others are two completely different things.

David C Do you hear yourself? personal attacks? Ya' just keep showin' how upside down the world is. the left is all about personal attacks. even bigger, it attacks personal liberty and responsibility. if you don't see that, you're too far gone at the moment to have a conversation that goes anywhere and grows with. the world isn't a left right world, and he's said that, but he's also said that it is important to pinpoint who does what, and he always describes the right or left in clear, accurate ways. in the end, it's not a left right world but some times, just like your name, it's helpful to actually use a name to makes clear the kind of ideology or actions that a certain group takes part in. to have a name for who you are talking about. you just did it yourself by claiming the right is all about personal attacks, hahaha. he is very critical of the right too. and if you were a true listener and reader of his, every day, you'd know that he's written books, done speeches, has a segment every week, on happiness, and you are making one point for him, that the left is, shown by studies too and by just living life every day and seeing it, the left is unhappier, the secular are unhappier. He is one of the happiest people I've ever been witness to.
@davidc7928

daniel curatolo Personal liberty? I admit the left is not perfect, but they are the only party that wants to stop Citizens United. The right is a joke. They want corps to give them as much money as they want. I am a working man and refuse to vote against myself. The right uses religion and racism to get regular folk to vote against themselves. As far as personal attacks, none are as bad as the right wing hate mongers on AM radio, which thankfully because of TuneIn and other internet radio options is dying.

Ryan Ferretti Cons want the government to run your personal, intimate life. They want the government to tell you who you can if sex with, which drugs you can take. They want to ban abortions. There is nothing wrong with Teacher's Unions, you just want all the power in the hands of a few people at the top.
@treetrain
@treetrain 9 лет назад
Rose NoHo how can you say you're informed and be this far off. they don't want the gov't to run your personal life, they want people to be personally responsible, and the gov't to let us do that, and for the gov't to also promote personal responsibility instead of taking it away from us. by giving us those liberties, we would be forced to face values, which when the gov't gives everything to us and there is no personal responsibility, they actually promote a social society that doesn't have values but gov't offerings. and there is nothing wrong with the idea of unions, but they have to be run financially and socially responsible, which they are not, and they actually take away tax dollars from people not even in the unions, cause political corruption, etc. everything is good until it is bad, and unions can be good if run responsibly and not corrupt like they are. you are so lost.

This is the first time I've listened to Dennis Prager, but I will certainly become a regular. I've been greatly blessed in my life with my family, my faith as an Orthodox Christian, with material wealth, travel, education, a loving husband, and everything coming up roses except for chronic pain. I don't have to act, because I am in fact contented, if not totally happy all the time. Dennis has made me aware of how I impact others when I talk of my pain, so I'll try acting, and believe I'll consequently become less aware of my pain.

After a twenty year nursing career, I've lived with chronic illness/pain of Scleroderma since 1996 and wish I had heard Dennis' message 20 years ago after diagnosis. I'm sure I've made my husbands life so difficult and wish I could go back and not talk about how distraught I feel so much. Will begin today to smile and laugh around him more often, despite how I'm feeling.
@7santarick
@7santarick 7 лет назад
I've started trying to do the same thing. I will sometime talk of my aches and pains with friends. Like Dennis says here, talk with your friends. But I always try to end it by saying that everybody has something wrong, bad back, bad leg whatever, so then I laugh about it and say so maybe I'm not so bad off after all. And really end with a laugh. If nothing else it helps me get through the day.

Several thoughts on this outstanding lecture concerning such an important topic. Below are the points I agree and disagree with Prager on AGREE 1. The opening introduction was very good. 2. Actions are definitely more important than feelings. 3. To beat procrastination they act first then you get in the mood. Very rarely will you ever be in the mood first to act. 4. Happy people attract people since no one wants to be around a negative pissed off person. 5. If you kids are unhappy as adults there is little you can do to change them. I believe trying to adjust behaviors and beliefs as adults is almost impossible. 6. Many times as an adult you need to act in contrary to your feelings. 7. You do have to let go of the past DISAGREE 1. Feeling some unhappiness is good since it can bring about change. Some people need to reach a certain level of pain or unhappiness to want to change. 2. Sharing your feelings with others is not recommended as either people don't care, are incapable of providing any helpful advice or will see you as a troubled person that they no longer want to associate with.

This is an interesting topic. It reminds me of a couple I met years ago when I was younger who knew my Dad. The man was very placid and intelligent, in fact my Dad arranged for me to work for him one summer since he wanted me to follow in his footsteps into the same trade as he had and this gentleman was the person who actually trained him. The woman was extremely obnoxious and treated the man like garbage even in public. The man tried very hard to change her even going to the extent of taking a year away from his business to spend full time with her in the hope of getting her to change. Not only did it not work but in later years when the poor man had a stroke and ended up disabled she actually deserted him. This is a good example of why non moody people should not get mixed up with the moody.

Happiness as he said isn’t psychological or feeling but a moral obligation. You can’t be happy until you take responsibility for your life. In a nutshell he wants to say “ Don’t be sad, a maxim that makes life easy because life is rife with potential stressors and if you are to be sad at any small matter or provocation you will never be happy. Happiness as well can be subjective from the material perspective as what makes you happy wouldn’t make the other happy…

Thanks Dennis! Happiness is really more of a choice than a feeling. I've always felt that way. Why do so many people choose sadness?

@Ericsurf6 "Happiness is really more of a choice than a feeling. " This is probably the only topic on which I disagree with Prager. Prager is doing the same thing that leftists do when they want to use a word that represents a concept or value, but then change the definition of that word as it suits them in their argument. For leftists some such words are "marriage," "fairness," and "sex." Happiness is a feeling. From Merriam-Webster: happiness: a : a state of well-being and contentment : joy b : a pleasurable or satisfying experience It may be desirable to act happy, but it is just the acting that is the good. It is good because we don't want to negatively affect others. If acting happy somehow results in actually becoming happy, or is just coincidental with happiness, then so much the better. But acting happy is not the same thing as being happy, by definition.

It's not a choice. It's a state of mind. Why are people sad? Well ask them what's wrong and maybe you can help them feel better.

Yes, my stepfather told me all my childhood that I was stupid and ugly too.... and his name was also Jim... very strange. And yes it's always in the back of my mind even though most people would never know it. God bless you for the work you do, very nice talk. Thank you!

The best comedians simply reveal us to ourselves. This talk is more entertainingly amusing than most comedians. Enjoy Laughing while you watch! Towards the end he shares that if you share unhappiness with a closest friend, recognizing common sources if life's imperfections and conflicts can lead to -- of all things -- laughter and the happiness it takes to accept what cannot be changed and the beginning of wisdom to change our own reactions & values & ability to change the world for the better. In other words, he starts with happiness is a moral obligation as a general principle, and at the end gives very specific examples.

Dennis, you made me realize that I too, have a compulsion to ease the foul moods of those around me. I can feel the " angst" of whoever is near me. I am a super sensitive Empath and their moody becomes MY moody and I don't like me when I feel moody and full of angst. It is palpable and thick as heavy fog. I don't like me when I am like that. Im always the first one in a room to break up the stress. To bring about a good ending when bad news people seek to control others by being " MOODY".
