Even if spooky/horror vibes aren’t typically my thing, I can’t help but admire the immense creativity that went into this book. I’m so glad the OSR exists

The first line of your comment made me hit play, faster than if I hadn't read it lol. Spooky horror is so much my thing lol.

Incredibly intriguing. One of the things I like about Real Life magical practices is how the act of doing magic is usually as physical as it is spiritual, emotional, and intellectual. The Rule of Similarity, where the magician mimes the effect they desire using materials of alike nature. The Rule of Contagion, taking things associated with a person, place, or thing to target that thing (or, conversely, to channel its power). Visceral acts of pageantry that the magician pours all their passion and will into. While regular D&D's use of magic is very convenient and breezy - facilitating the fantasy of power to be summoned at will - there's something to be said about folkloric magic that demands specific actions for narrative effects. Indeed, even modern D&D occasionally dips into this with some of its spells and their components. It's one thing to wave a wand and speak the words, and have a person cursed to be unable to heal. It's another thing entire to fill a bag with nails and the victim's old clothes, bearing your own seal, and make it impossible to have their malady taken seriously. Moreover, I like the idea of a magic being something anyone can do, so long as they follow the forms. A temptation to any character, to dip into arcane arts or dark methods. A tool of liberation for the disempowered, or a transgression that can worm its way into even the most stalwart of souls.

I love this kind of spells in the tabletop, DnD really killed the magic of magic with their extremely limiting and sterile interpretation of the arcane.

I kind of share this sentiment. My players (who are 30yr veterans of ADND) often boil spells and Magic down to their most utilitarian. It does kill the wonder and charm of magic. What I’ve done to combat this is to allow for use of unusual and powerful magics that can’t be flung around in normal turn based combat but are cast ritualistically with special components, locations, and times / astronomical alignments that are needed to achieve a goal or milestone in game.

Yet another book to add to my ever-growing list of cool must-haves, most of which I have been introduced to via this show. Thanks to your quick "alert" that you posted recently I was able to take advantage of the big fire sale a drivethrurpg. I purchased some excellent books (mostly as pdf downloads). I am making my way through the Stygian Library. Such an excellent setting full of the wierd and the wonderment. Several of the spells you discuss in this review made me think "how would the keepers of the Stygian Library respond to this?". The erasure spell, for instance. And would that work on all copies of the target book throughout the multiverse--including the Libraries own copies--or only those in that particular reality or timeline wherein the erasure spell was cast? Hm... Possibly a reason someone might need to get to the Library: because some villain erased some important piece of literature from the consciousness of their world, and without it there will be some catastrophic consequence. Very cool book, and keep up the QB reviews

This is so cool. I can imagine, for example, a group of adventurers voluntarily having the spell that makes them immune to love / charm cast on them in advance of fighting a succubus; maybe doing so is standard practice in the game world. And you could make some interesting stories from that potentially not being dispelled after.

Just ordered it. I wish Wonder and Wickedness was still available in print, same for Marvels and Malisons -I've gone for the PDF for them.

Was on the fence and it was in the cart last night...now it is purchased before all your viewers buy it and I can't make a decision later! Still looking for a US shipping option for Electric Bastionland!

I see “D&D Spellbook”, and think, “not for me thanks, but still, I ain’t missing a Questing Beast video for nothing.” Then I see “Lost Pages” and immediately wonder why my wallet is several dozen dollars lighter.

Always enjoy these types of things that are creative and flavorful. Random nitpick: Saying "edible but not safe to eat" is a contradiction, because edible means safe to eat.

Perhaps meant more like, it is capable of being ingest but not necessarily good to ingest. Like eating play-dough haha

Is that one finger supposed to be not filled in with foil, printing error? Or intentional?

I know it’s based on the OSR, but is this still compatible with 5e?
@johngregory2874
@johngregory2874 2 года назад
Yup it wouldn’t take much to make it work for 5e. I actually saw someone on Reddit working on 5e Gaub class supplements.

You mentioned it was high quality like the books "Lamentations put out back in the day", but Lamentations books are still very high quality. Staffordshire Trading Company for example is such a nice book to hold.
