"Less is not laziness" That’s an idea I have had to get comfortable with. I remember reading this book 8 years ago and it was a new look at how to organize life and what matters. I'm going to read it again. Thank you for another great video.
I just read this book a month back and I still cannot grasp that this was written 14 years ago, before productivity RU-vid channels and blogs were even invented. Wow, this guy is revolutionary
I read this book 8 years ago and it completely changed my perspective on life, retirement and the concept of money and how to use it. Such a brilliant book!
I'm from the Philippines and I get that labor is cheaper here, but it would be more dignified and less offensive if people outside the country would pay more than $5 an hour (that's not even minimum wage here) so the ones they employ would have a higher quality of life. I was enjoying the video until I heard that one and had to say something- just food for thought.
@@johnpaulpunzalan8562 I'm a freelancer and the entitlement of some (not all) employers from other countries demanding the same output they would pay a high amount for, from people here they're happy to pay pennies. Tbh he could have gone without saying the cost, and just say 'cheaper'. It's the tone and the laugh that make it so offensive.
@@Evraaah Exactly. What's worse is everyone else in this comment section doesn't seem to have a problem with it hahaha :( I know Ali probably didn't mean to offend, but it's disappointing really that he can explicitly say the words "take advantage" of the difference between the developing and developed world without batting an eye. Corporations already take advantage of this, but I'd hope that individuals who would benefit massively from the labor of someone from my country would have empathy to pay them what they deserve, not just what they can get away with.
I tried to read that book. It's awful. Disrespectful attitude and ignorant/arrogant approach just did not sit with me. Would not recommend. For what you highlighted too...
I'm with you that time is the main asset! I love the way the book encourages creative thinking, and finding alternative ways to make things happen with less resources.
Can’t agree with you more, This book changed my life 4 years ago when I read it, it gave me the courage to dabble in a few different businesses to see what I liked and ultimately gave me the confidence to ask my company if I could work remotely when covid started and ended up moving out of state. I’ve now been working remote ever since and doing mini vacations more often than I could have when we lived in Alaska lol great review Ali!
I don't believe in luck. It's not all about how you work hard, it's about how you manage your time, resources, mind to work together for a better output.
There _is_ luck, there is privilege (which one could argue is a form of luck at birth). It is possible though to acknowledge that reality AND still work hard and learn to manage resources efficiently. 🤷
“Instead of thinking about what makes us happy, think about what makes you excited.” - that sounds like awesome advice. Have actually read 4 hour workweek (and subsequently forgot a lot of it) but really appreciated this, as it’s been a long time so having this sort of high level summary is actually really useful. Significantly better than Blinkist! Good luck for your book mate.
I’ve been wanting to read this book, but wasn’t convinced about the “new rich” concept. Thanks for simplifying the ideas and elaborating on what he is trying to emphasize. Great summary 👍🏽
This book is bullshit. Apple, Tesla, Amazon, Walmart, Southwest, Skadden, The Beatles were not built off a Four-hour Work Week, those places or groups took massive amount of time and brain power to stay on course. Damn I really hated this book. Lazy ass Millennials. I’m a millennial myself and we always trying finding a shortcut for everything. Enough of that shit.
@@franciscocolin2008 lol bro you missed the point he's not talking about building the next Apple, Tesla, or Microsoft, if this is your goal then you might want to look for a different book, he's talking about having time and freedom to live your life while you're young and healthy and also have the money coming in from say a business or something to sustain yourself. I'm glad you're passionate and determined to work hard but you also have to think about for example someone like Steve Jobs right, built one of THE best companies in the world with a cult following and died of cancer at age 56? I mean extreme example here but just saying it's about living life not working for mills for the sake of it.
@@franciscocolin2008 Yeah you just straight up missed. Also the idea that millennials are “lazy” is just honestly stupid and actually be shown that that is just not true. But yeah, they weren’t built off of a 4 hour week. That’s kinda not the whole point of the book, it’s just a title. Also, are you trying to build the next Apple or Amazon? Like that has no relative importance
Haven’t read a book since school until I watched this video and decided to buy a copy. Now thoroughly enjoy reading each day and half way through. Thank you for the videos like this please keep them coming 👌
I loved 4hour work week! Definitely found it hard to implement when I first read it but your vids have helped make it more simple. Your channel has helped me start my own documenting life in law school. Thanks Ali!
You should do a vlog series about your progress on getting a concept artist. I would love to see the steps you are taking on getting better in drawing and the whole thinking process behind the improvement. 👍 Making art is fun! 😍
I am SHOOK that this is the book that most changed your life. While some of the concepts are decent, overall I thought it was overhyped, and his practical advice on how to accomplish the "new rich" lifestyle is already pretty much obsolete. But that is the beauty of books, something in it obviously resonated with you and triggered some powerful growth. On a side note, I inadvertently got someone fired because of this book. I think I may make a video about it because you and Daniel Inskeep both mentioned this in your videos in the last week and it would make for a pretty good video.
The quote you shared in the Define stage its absolutely life changing. I totally agree that "someday" is a disease that take our dreams. I started my Photoshop RU-vid channel also with the same fears you also described, "will it has positive or negative feedback", "will they understand my English, because I'm not so fluent". Yeah, whatever, let's do it and see how it goes. And like you said "Just do it and correct course along the way".
Ali! Long time watcher, first time commenter. Your thumbnail. 😂 The fact you put Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey as possible books had me laughing! Thank you for putting in such great attention to detail!
i lot of this is defeatist "oh it's too hard" mentality too though. please also see that. you'll experience less and be less socially well rounded because of contracting everything out. we all gotta come outside eventually. no hiding from life. i'll help myself without treating others as less. and i'm in a wheelchair almost dead, slowly recovering from long covid.....and i'm even ready to man up now and do allllllll the things yo. bet. for all the people who are sick and tired, of being sick and tired.
Ali: "Emails are the sort of thing that we sorta check every hour of the day" My coworker: "Why are you checking your Emails only twice a day?" Me at work: "I don't wanna check my Emails, that is where the Emails are"
My brother was a deferrer with retirement plans: having been a teenage hippy surfer, all that sun came back to bite him. Melanoma at 61 and dead of liver cancer at 65. There's some good advice in this video: live while you can.
appreciate you more and more. You are so brainy and still relatable, so I believe I can do this too. I believe you questioning some steps and overcoming your fears - just shows some healthy humility in my opinion. :) thanks for sharing & putting your work out
RU-vid recommended your video from 2018 on how to study better - I'm a university instructor and always looking for compelling videos to share with students. Then went down the rabbit hole watching other excellent and interesting videos, including the 9 passive income ideas. I'm trying to picture any US doctor going through medical school with the thought of "how can I get to a place where I can choose whether to be a doctor", given the crippling cost of medical school here. Definitely highlights the difference between our healthcare systems.
The fact that it took you 52 videos just to get a 1000 subscribers blows my mind! It also inspires me to never give up on my RU-vid channel, so thank you :)
You know honestly all this seems so hard to understand and people will just get bored and let it slide past(including me), but you know deep down I know this counts, for us becoming better people. Thanks Ali!
A book that my 'before she was my wife' bought was "Who Moved My Cheese?". She got it for when I was trying to discover my passion in life. It turned out to be right in front of me.
Alex Soojung-Kim Pang‘s ‘Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less’ speaks of similar to this book. I suggest everyone try the book. I found it helpful.
Ali you have created the best channel on RU-vid. I feel grateful that you are sharing such life changing content. I also love the 4 Hour Work Week and pretty much all of Tim Ferriss’ work 🤙🏻🤙🏻
I am not sure why people fall for this book. The only people that praise this book are those who eventually ended up being rich. I smell confirmation bias. In reality, you need more than 4 hours a week to become successful. And do you really think that you just work 4 hours to produce content of this magnitude? Don't bulls**t us.
i think the point isn't to work 4 hours to begin with but develop a business so you only have to work 4 hours once it's thriving (obviously difficult in practice lol)
Started reading this last summer because you mentioned it in one of your videos, and it was REALLY refreshing and inspired me to think differently and try paths I never imagined I would ever walk on
This was a book, I'd guessed before the video started. Going to read it soon Have been trying all your books and it has been a life-changing experience.
At 7:15, Ali mentioned getting approached by a book publisher, now to coming to the present he creates New York Times Best seller "Feel-Good Productivity"
Thank you for these I love it !!! I want more like these on different books to make life a bit easier for me saving up great chunks of time.I started watching this channel yet now after this long I’ve grown to love it alot.✨
Being uncertain can also lead to unhappiness. I appreciate the point but it’s not so clear cut. Also, living in a developing country we don’t get as many opportunities or fallbacks as those of you in the west. I guess we’d appreciate a more nuanced approach
Quran is an ocean.. i have been studying it for more than 10 years and still don’t know everything in it❤️ when i finish it or at least feel comfortable with what i knew i will make (if god allowed me) a guide for people who never read it to make it easier no navigate through🙏🏻
@thakkumikku People going on the streets for human rights while the Quran have addressed many issues 1450+ years ago.. here is an example.. (13) O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allāh is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Aware.❤️
Never understood the book before, you did a great job explaining it. I think though that not all jobs can be part--time or dip in or out. Something like medicine is a craft you have to hone through practice and experience and then maybe it becomes a part time vocation.
Thanks Ali, You you tube videos have continuously inspired me especially the productivity videos, I am from Uganda in Africa. Please keep doing what you do.... Much appreciate!!
I completely disagree with ignoring weaknesses. If you don't fix where you're weak, you will constantly be attacked there, or lose ground to those weaknesses. You don't realize it, but when you harbor a weakness, it's an opening for dysfunction, which over time could possibly cost you significantly.
Ali, I kinda agree with you that there is great pleasure in working to get better at the things that you sort of suck at and are scared to do. Public speaking, Singing in public, Playing the guitar, Grad work in computer science.
hi abdal you need to do a pod cast with your mom . it'll be of great help to the mothers who are raising thier kids n their own. what was your mother's prospective on ife? how she was able to work and raise her kids as single mother.what were her strngths and what helped her to build you people up to be successful pesons, and finally is she happy how you and your brother taimoor turned up?? plz its a request and give it a serious thought
One important idea regarding setting goals (D for definition chapter) that you didn't mention: Tim describes how we should set ambitious and unreasonable goals - these, unlike "realistic" goals keep us interested and inspired, whereas average goals will equal an average effort from us. Average goals also mean the most fierce competition, because that's the level at which most people set goals and operate. It's a pretty good chapter (System Reset), I recommend everyone reading to pay attention to it.
Why need a book when u have Ali abdaal the library 📚 The amount of work that goes through making these videos is lit af Thanks for all the work u do to make us knowledgeable🙏
Time is limited money is not! Still, mindsets are what they are. Their are no right or wrong answers to these statements, it's all a question of priority & tolerance to take risk & be happy.
I have already read your recommendation - the millionaire fastlane and it is having a tremendous impact on my way of thinking and life decisions all together. I see this current book in this video is more or less trying to convey the same thing. Do you still recommend me reading this book? Your simple yes or no will save me a week time of reading decision. Thanks❤
