My favorite part of this review was how I kept hearing "The Rider" as "The Writer." And in a story this poorly done, really the only way conflict would happen is because the writer says so.

I know this is an old review, but I felt I should share my opinion on The Seeker, as a big fan of the book. Now I realize the book isn't any fantasy epic, and comparing it to authors like Tolkien definitely won't do anything good for it. My mom read the whole series out loud to me and my siblings, so my goggles might be slightly rose colored too, but I hope you won't discredit my opinion because of this. Anyway, what I really remember from the book, and I feel is lacking from the adaptation, is the constant sense of lurking danger from the bleak wintery landscape, and the constant question of who to trust and who not to trust. The movie seemed more to me like watered down Harry Potter, which I felt was a misinterpretation of the book's style and atmosphere.

The whole time I was thinking man that girl playing the love interest looks really old to play a young girl but yeah she was 25 when this movie came out sometimes they look young enough to pass for 15 16, she did not. Been binge watching your work and was excited to see you did this...till the review. Your video was good, dont get me wrong, but I was hoping to see you rip into how far they strayed from the book. But guess if you are not a fan of the book, I can see how you'd like the movie better. My biggest issue with the movie was how Will's family treated him. They act like he's nothing while in the book he is very well love, especially by his oldest brother and yougest sister. While I'll agree that Will learning everything from a book in a day was a little Gary Stu, it was a set up for how he was going to be potrated later in the series as the replacement for Merryweather. And I will have to respectfully disagree about Will being handed all the signs in the book. Not only did he have to find the signs, he had to solve puzzle onto how to collect them. That was what I most wanted to see adapted in the movie. Edit: I will admit the way the book series read I don't think wasn't meant for adults. I would say that this series is like Tolkien's The Hobbit.

I agree with pretty much everything you said about the book. I love it anyway. It's short and easy without being childish, and while the mythological references are handled rather shallowly, the ones I recognize make me feel smart, and the ones I don't are intriguing enough to make me want to look them up.

1) Krimson, YOUR editing is way better than the editing of the actual movie. 2) This movie is the most cut and paste patchwork I’ve ever forgotten: Percy Jackson is the last in an ancient race of Obi-Wans and he has to show that he’s the Chosen Weasley sibling, find the Dragon Balls, and stop Nazgul Loki and the Dark Side. 3) Seriously, Christopher Eccleston should stay away from playing villains 4) Riordan is pronounced “REAR-DIN” 5) 26:37 Well, SOMEONE watches My Hero Academia. 😉
@genevievegreso2127
@genevievegreso2127 6 лет назад
1) As the show's current editor, thanks! 2) I'd settle for derivative if it actually had a plot! If you've ever heard about the "and then" Vs "therefore" theory, you'll know what I mean when I say this film is nothing but "and then." 3) There's nothing wrong with Eccleston playing villains, especially with that sonorous baritone voice and northern accent, he just keeps choosing the lamest ones. 4) Krimson and I can't even agree on how to say "rawther" let alone "Rye-ordun" 5) I can't speak for Krimson, but I can certainly say SOMEONE does, and that said someone is quite depressed at how long they'll have to wait for season 3.

I actually liked the book better than the movie and this is after reading the book for the second time. I say this because the book was loosely based around the old tales of winter solstice; of the encroaching darkness of winter verses the light that symbolizes the coming of spring. Like the battle of the Holly King and Oak King where the Oak King is victorious against the Holly King (the Oak King represented Summer and the Holly King represented Winter). Some the elements you brought up during your review, like the movie focusing on Will dealing with being an Old One and his emotions on the subject mixed with how old he is, I kinda liked and can agree with; but what I found weird was how the Wanderer's impact on Merriman in the book was left out during your review. Was it because the Wanderer wasn't referenced in the movie? If so that is a shame because I found his character gave reason for Merriman's strict impression during the book before the Wanderer's true identity was revealed. Either than that I have to say this was the one book I was hoping to see reviewed, but leaving a little sad that it's this book that you have problems with. Overall, it's your opinion and I'm still glad you got a chance to read this book.
@KrimsonRogue

Here's a reason why Seventh Son fails as an adaptation of The Spook's Apprentice: Almost all of the characters have American accents, which is inaccurate and inappropriate because the book's setting, the County, is a fantasy version of Lancashire in northern England; with certain towns corresponding to real-life towns, for instance, Preistown is Preston, Caster is Lancaster, Black Pool is Blackpool, and Chippendon is Chipping. Also, since you touched upon Arthurian legend, would you ever consider comparing the Welsh film Y Mabinogi with the Mabinogion?
@debzykvids

Still, he needs to review it, though, along with the Narnia adaptations. I've heard so much about how awful it is.

Agreed. The alleged awfulness of Seventh Son was why I refused to watch it with my parents on Netflix a few months ago. That and I had work to do.
@petehill7280
@petehill7280 6 лет назад
The thing is though, which Narnia adaptation would he pick? There's the 1979 animated TV special adaptation of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, there's the BBC TV miniseries from the Eighties (which is technically a lost film because the BBC lost the master of it, but technically also not a lost film because there are DVDs of it), the 80's miniseries versions of Prince Caspian, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Silver Chair, and the relatively recent big screen adaptations of TLTWaTW, PC, and TVoTDT.

I totally didn't know what this movie was, and I confused it with The Giver and I was very confused for 11 minutes and then I realized why. Well I've made too much of a commitment...so...

As someone who grew up reading these books, this made me so angry tbh. The Dark is Rising also ended up being my least favourite book of the series despite how cool it seemed to kid me, so idk I try to forget about this movie...

You should review Die Hard next Christmas as an adaptation of the Roderick Thorp Novel.

Knowing im gonna get hate: I dont like Tolkiens writing style. Dont get me wrong, I love details and to understand the wordl. But he just drags on and on and on on things we as a reader do NOT need to know. To me it feels as if he forgot to remove his own notes and the editors forgot to say "Hey, this noteblock thats meant only for you should be removed". I have tried reading lord of the rings several times but by the time of lothlorien I just give up from boredom.

Why do ppl say Die Hard isnt a Christmas movie?! A guy comes to a Christmas party he doesn't want to be at just for his estranged wife who then he desperatly tries to save from terrorists. The only way for the movie to be more christmas it would need to have Santa as a Character in it. Which is not a requirement

I've had this book series since I was 9 or 10, and enjoyed it... but never loved it. I still have them, in pretty good condition too, because I don't read them much. Meanwhile, my childhood copies of The Chronicles of Narnia fell apart and/or was lost decades ago. I genuinely disliked how much the movie deviated from the books but I suppose that I can still agree with your complaints about them. True, the movie took away some of the things that made the books stand out among other more modern kid's/young adult fantasy, but were those things actually that great? The story is slow, Will is just GIVEN so much, he acts like an adult in a child's body, a lot of the Arthurian/Old English/Welsh Mythology is not really explained well and seems to expect its audience to just KNOW what it is/means... In the end though I think pointlessly making Will American and removing the character of sympathetic villain The Walker are my two biggest gripes. Of the books, I think that The GRey King is probably the best/my favorite, though it goes really deep into Arthurian/Welsh Myth, but since Will starts the book recovering from a Dark attack that left him weakened and partially amnesiac he's a bit more tolerable. Since you've gone and confessed about liking a bad adaptation of a popular fantasy series I'll try to be brave too and admit that I like the SYFY Earthsea movie better than the Earthsea books. I still do like the first book in that series (and like the overall Earthsea trilogy better than The Dark is Rising books) though I don't find too much of it that great beyond world-building and the magic system. So, I didn't have too much of a problem that they dosed it with Harry Potter and LotR tropes. Though, only the Kargad characters should have been cast as white, the other Earthsea ethnicities are supposed to be darker-skinned. It doesn't bug me too much, but I can see how it would others- a waste of a good chance to add color to the oh-so white genre of Medieval Fantasy.

Since you mentioned Shakespeare. I think you should do The Book Was Better review for Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet. For Hamlet you should watch this version:www.imdb.com/title/tt0171359/?ref_=nv_sr_6. For Romeo & Juliet you can chose either the 90s one or this one:www.imdb.com/title/tt1645131/?ref_=nv_sr_3.

I agree Die Hard is a Christmas movie. I read a few chapters to the Dark Is Rising book right after watching the movie and after watching this review. I had to agree with Krimson here on the Signs and what are they suppose to do when having all of them. Like the seven chaos emeralds make Shadow, Sonic, and Silver turn them into Super selves. Seven Dragonballs grants a user one wish. Seven infinity stones manipluate or change reality. But when I heard that the Signs doesn't do anything I look at the book and like what in the hell do they do oh wait NOTHING but make a person stronger. Really? That's all they do make a person stronger uh sounds dumb and bullshit.

A movie is not a Christmas movie just because it happens during Christmas, references that time of year, or contains a visual reference to Christmas. It needs to specifically BE ABOUT Christmas.
