The Boom - Shima Uta

It is difficult to overestimate the effect on Okinawan music that the Boom’s number one, 1.5 million selling single ‘Shima Uta’ had in 1993. Although interest in Okinawan music had swelled on the mainland from the end of 1980s, it was the Boom that brought the sanshin and Okinawan influenced music to the masses. It's since become one of Japan and Okinawa's best known songs, and has been covered by artists both in Japan and around the world.
This footage is of the The Boom performing in 1995 on a short-lived NHK programme called Asia Live, which was simultaneously broadcast in other Asian countries.

I wonder whether a great proportion of the people commenting here are really aware of the meaning of this deeply moving song (I gather they are not, given the shallowness of many of these posts). My heart goes to the innocent people of Okinawa who lost their lives during WWII, both at the hands of the Imperial Army and of the Americans. Okinawans were taken as human shields, children were recruited as warriors, women were raped, and a lot committed suicide as "commanded" by the Mainland. Yes, beautiful island song, go and ride the wind together with the birds, cross the sea and carry my love with you, so anyone can hear this story. Thanks Miyazawa, for this amazing song.

Thank you for your reply, and the background to this song. As you say, deeply moving. I was lucky enough to interview Miyazawa about this song a few times, and to hear firsthand his account of his story and the emotion he felt that inspired him to write it.

I remember this show. This song is the only thing I remembered from the show. The melody has been hovering in my mind from time to time for over 20 years without i knowing its name and who was the singer. Eventually today i found it again. The glitters flying in the air were crystal clear in my memory. I remembered that they stuck to singer's face because he sweat a lot. Can not believe so many years have passed since then.

You made me curious to listen to Alfredo Casero. This is what I came up with: The Boom's version definitely sounds more pure and seems more soulful and heartfelt. Casero's version has a lot more elements to it which makes it very interesting. But in the end, Casero's version is an homage/cover/remix to the original artist. Your opinion is just your opinion man. Sometimes the first version you hear will give a bias to that one over the other one. In summary, IMO, Casero's version is not better, but I welcome the new take on Shima Uta. They are both good in their own right. Apparently Casero performed Shima Uta with some Japanese person (I couldn't recognize him, but maybe it was the Boom).

I was clearly joking, bro. Alfredo Casero was like, the personification of PARODY in Argentina. A comedian who recorded a couple of songs and got Shima Uta to be a bit popular.
