I just listened to the audio podcast to see if Jenny explained making that connection due to a particular interest in Toy Story or Pixar films or animation, or playing with the plastic soldiers as a child. NO! That was a BRILLIANT connection! (In the first audio segment I got the answer right away because I was a kid in the time period mentioned! And the item which is the answer can still be purchased online!)

John Noakes said he later found out that the BBC had not insured him for any of his activities, which included the highest civilian skydive at the time, the Nelson's Column episode, and sledding down the Cresta Run, where he got badly injured. He was, unsurprisingly, furious with the Beeb.

A thing that really scared the heck out of me as a child was from a nature documentary. I wouldn't flinch when they showed lions tearing a zebra to pieces or something like that - but there was that one sound that really got to me. The documentary was about Australia I believe, and there were horses starving to death for some reason I don't remember. They were all skin and bones, and they would die standing up - and then just fell over. And when they hit the ground, they made this weird sound of rattling, cracking bones and ribs. And that very sound really gave me nightmares...

I was racking my brain trying to think of what he was doing. The moment she said "army man" it clicked so hard you probably could have heard it. 1992...Pixar...Toy Story...visualizing how to animate the army men. Man, that question is so easy when you know the answer.
@KasabianFan44
@KasabianFan44 13 дней назад
Please help me, because I still don’t understand the answer… who are those “army men”?
@TimEd.o7o7
@TimEd.o7o7 9 дней назад
@@KasabianFan44 the tiny green army men from toy story. Their plastic toy form has a solid base for their poses, so obviously the toys wouldn't be able to articulate the feet moving and would have to shuffle around with said board nailed to their "shoes", so Pixar did just that for the animation but writ large to get the idea as to how one would move with such limitations

In the 1980s I was working for a computer games company (Martech) who needed to animate human movement for a new game. Someone had a book of pictures taken by victorian photographers of human movement from which the graphics were drawn. So this animator was re-inventing something that had already been done. A daily occurrence in the IT industry!

Initial thoughts: snowboarding boots/binders maker? Both feet on the same "board", and the jump test simulates negative and positive Gs, as well as hard impact, twisting and stability feedback depending on the jump Easier, quicker, and much cheaper than using real boards and bindings outside on snow.
@sophiamarchildon3998
@sophiamarchildon3998 Год назад
4:50 After the boarding thing was dismissed, and we're told he was videoed scrambling around the office. I went to an anti-diarrhea/vomiting ad following the lines of "when the runs hit you, getting on time to the loo is more of a struggle than you think; be safe, use our products". Either that, or part of an accessibility campaign for workplaces along the lines of "place yourself in their shoes for a minute; mobility is more difficult than you think". Especially true in case of emergencies and evacuations.

1:58 Assuming it's not extreme sport related, maybe he was a lawyer or police investigator something and this stunt was to prove or disprove something about how you can or cannot move with your feet locked in place on a board for some famous case from 1992 (at which point I was 10 so I don't remember many cases from that time)?
@SteinGauslaaStrindhaug
@SteinGauslaaStrindhaug 5 месяцев назад
Interestingly, in the late 80s early 90s we used to make something we called a "go board" or "walk board" by taking a thick plank about the size of a skateboard, nailing in two ca 2" by 4" blocks of wood on the underside and nailing in two leather straps on the top where we could shove our shoes in and "walk" around on it like that. I'm not sure if it was a common thing around the world, or if it was just a Norwegian thing (because skateboards were banned from 1978 to 1989 for some weird reason) or if it was just lokal thing that some of my friends invented. It might have been just one of the "least effort" thing we could make in wood working class; that we kept making just because then we would look busy; or it might have had some real purpose. I suppose it might originally have been a home made skateboard substitute, meant to be able to practice skateboard jumps and tricks without access to a real skateboard. Maybe the straps either was a misunderstanding by my friends of how it was supposed to work, or it was a substitute for grip tape since our woodworking teacher probably would get angry if we used all the sandpaper to glue onto some wooden boards.

Advert WAS super glue. But it was before 1992. I'd say 1980. I remember seeing it demonstrated life, in a shopping conference, salon, something, when I was in my early twenties. They claimed was that 1 square cm of glue could hold 100KG and they used a full tube of glue. I though: so much for the 100kg/square cm
