Our chickens love borage especially the flowers. They will jump to eat the flowers! It's funny to watch when the borage grows 3 feet tall and the chickens are jumping to get the flowers at the top. It's very easy to grow and the seeds are large.
We just planted a small patch of borage on our new homestead so we can attract the bees and it is going crazy already in about 10 days. this video is inspiring me to drop some more seeds in since they are all coming up so quickly! thanks for the informative video we will surely be using this as chop and drop since we are trying to build up our soil
Borage is one of my all time favorite herbs! Thank you for the pruning tip. We have a serious bee shortage in New Hampshire. Borage attracts honey, bumble and tiny wild bees to our farm gardens.
I have borage specifically for the bees. They love it. I would just perhaps suggest that one prunes after the flowers are done so that bees have had plenty of access to food. It's a wonderful plant!
Ground Cherries are like a tomatillo fruit. They grow in a little lantern and when they are ripe they fall off the plant onto the ground. Then you open them and eat the fruit inside. (Easiest harvest ever!) There are several varieties. I have a Pineapple Cosack Ground Cherry (pea sized) and a Peruvian Ground Cherry (grape sized). There is another variety the Poha Berry-Cape Gooseberry. They will also self seed. I am in Central FL, so not familiar with your growing climate. I have seen people grow them in WA state.
Hey Dan, Did you start your plants by direct sowing or did you transplant them? Most of what I have read suggests direct sowing but I have some pretty deep mulch and don't have much luck with that method.
I like to plant close and I then thin my plants prettt severely. I strip leaves, some of the oldest large ones and many small ones along with flower stems no longer holding flowers. If you have leaves blocking a vegetable from sun take them off. Let the light in, keep down on molds and mildew, allowing air to get through your plants.
