I'm sure you've all heard about Squaresoft's little brush with beat em ups, and I'm sure it wasn't exactly in the best light. Well, let's give this kind of rpg, kind of 3d fighter a cahnce at redemption. Today we take a look at dream facotry's The Bouncer, a game that everyone hates. Which pretty much guarantees it a spot here on Trashed Classics.

"The Bouncer kept a buttery smooth 60 FPS, which was rare at the time." - 2019. It is still true that most consoles struggle to keep 60 FPS.
@heavysystemsinc.
@heavysystemsinc. 3 года назад
The sad thing is that devs don't realize they don't have to go more realism/detail at this point. For action games, there's no reason to have less than 60fps. For RPGs and less action oriented games, sure, go for detail, but in action games, I'd rather stare at flat shaded, low detail everything and max frame rate, which is even more important these days with lag introduced by all this video processing between the when the consoles spit out the image and when it appears on screen. I play lots of old games on CRT and if you don't actually do this, you won't ever realize just how bad lag gets on some of these new games with high resolutions, or dealing with televisions upscaling internally.

I feel like you don’t get enough credit for your technical know how and analysis. A LOT of people on RU-vid take a look at old games and analyze their stories and gameplay elements, which is fine, but very few actually know what they are talking about when it comes to technical aspects. Many don’t even dive into it beyond “the graphics are great” I feel like only you and digital foundry satisfies that need for me. You though blend the other things into it well, from historical anecdotes to personal ones. So yeah, keep up the good work!

Speaking of games that got completely lambasted and destroyed because of a few voices within the games-journosphere, I would seriously like to see you take a look at a little game called NeverDead. A game so panned by western critics on release, that it was the last original IP Konami ever released, and that it irreparably destroyed the director's career. The director being Shinta Nojiri, who some of you might remember from games such as Policenauts and the Metal Gear series (Acid specifically). And did the game actually deserve such a harsh beating? Well, I'm hoping you might give it a try and decide for yourself.

@@AvalancheReviews The concept is very cool as well, and I think a lot of the criticism aimed at it came from a lack of understanding of the game's mechanics. In fact, a lot of it comes down to good use of the upgrade system, and playing around with different upgrade combinations to suit the situation. Anyway the game seems to go for pretty cheap used, so you should definitely check it out if it looks like your cup of tea. I'd definitely be interested in hearing your thoughts on it, good or bad.

This happens to be my most favorite fighting game. I always saw it as the most unique fighting game since it was more of an adventure rpg fighting game. You totally forgot to mention the experience of multiplayer mode, playing the different badass characters you come across in the game. You also didn’t talk about how badass the game’s soundtrack is. The music to this game will always be my soundtrack as a kid. You forgot to say how great and entertaining Mugetsu can be. There’s so much you left out.

I picked Sion, my lil brother was Kou and our neighbor was Volt. Each character was unique and had their own fighting styles that differed from the others. Plus you slowly got stronger over time and all 3 characters kept their upgrades throughout all the levels even if the AI was playing them. To me it was just awesome all the way through.

There was a mechanic that took use of the PS2 controller's touch sensitive buttons where if you lightly pressed square, you would do one move, but if you heavily pressed square, you did a completely different move. And you had to pay close attention to how you pressed these buttons bc you would have combos using the same button but going back and forth between light and heavy presses. ...and I can tell OP didn't use a PS2 controller and played this on an emulator, because he spams the same combos over and over. There was a very deep combo system that is forever lost because of the button sensitivity technology not being carried over from the PS2 controllers because..... no one used it. Much like the six axis functionality.

U hit the nail on the head w/ the statement about the early 2000s!! I was born in ‘94 so I wasn’t that old when this game released but I remember it vividly. Games of that time r the greatest, maybe my opinion is biased but how games from the 90s did we play in 2000s?? Sonic & Mario at most. Once 3D gaming took it GTA 3, vice city, the bouncer & even sports games the bar was raised very high. It’s a shame that kids who didn’t experience that time would say games like this r “trash” but when u consider how ahead of its time it was nearly 20 yrs ago then u see that this game will always be a classic

This is one of my most memorable games I've played, infact. I love this game to death! I believe that this game deserves an remaster, remake. Or an Re-Release. Plus, the music is amazing!

0:29 that’s a HUGE ISSUE in gaming. That’s why RU-vidr’s are called “influencers” now. I think reviews are great, but people have completely lost the ability to form independent opinions... everyone just adopts whatever the most pervasive narrative is. And people assume “if everyone feels this way, it must be true”, without realizing that perception is done in “trickle-down” manner, where even the BIGGEST influencers on RU-vid look at other to shape the opinion that they will then push to their audience. It’s kind of sad.

It does seem to be heading that way. It sucks that success kind of requires people to be that way.

Avalanche Reviews it’s kind of crazy to think that this has been going on in gaming for so long... only because it seems more prevalent now than ever before. But I remember every magazine kind of crapping on The Bouncer when it was released... And when I got it, I can’t tell you how many of my friends outright said it sucked, despite the fact that they had never played it. And yeah, it’s flawed as hell, but it still attempts more than many of its contemporaries were doing, and I feel that it nicely lands more than it misses. I don’t like using the phrase “ahead of its time” because I don’t think it applies, and in this case, I don’t think the Bouncer was revolutionary, but it was far better than it ever got credit for being, and I think that a remake (not a remaster) would be well-received today, especially if Square made it (because people immediately love anything that Squenix does)... Especially if it had 3-player co-op.

I enjoyed it. It reminded me of Fighting force on the PS1. And I was all about square back then.

This game is such a classic, and with mods for Doom 2 as insanely good like: Eternal Slayer (a mod that makes the player model a 3d rendition of the Doom Eternal Doom Slayer that changes the play style into a hack n slash) Brutal Doom (no explanation needed, anyone who's dealt inti Doom mods will likely have tried this one once) And many other mods and quite a bit of good maps. Because of these things, I believe the Bouncer being remade into a Doom 2 mod will be perfect! Basically, it would turn the game into a beat em up (like the Bouncer) with characters from the Bouncer. Except instead of fighting ninjas from mega corporations, they are fighting the hordes of Hell.

It's also worth mentioning that The Bouncer was never completely finished since DreamFactory left mid development, It was originally supposed to have interactive environments, and weapons but was scrapped. DreamFactory would later take some of the ideas from The Bouncer to make Kakuto Chojin, If you play that game's Battle Royale mode it's basically an improved version of The Bouncers gameplay without the ragdoll physics.

I remember clearly a review stating that the frame rate wasn't smooth, and in fact had a huge problem with slow down. I guess I either remember wrong or they were just making crap up. Knowing me I probably remember wrong. This game reminds me of one of my favorite games: Project Sylpheed for 360. The second I saw pictures for it I knew I would love it, and love it I did. There's just something about Japanese games that would otherwise not have a story but have one anyway that make for good gaming. This is a 3D space shooter I got at GameStop a few years back for about $3.00. The story is actually very good and the characters and voice acting are top notch. The game play is as good as it should be. It doesn't lag behind the rest of the game. Project Sylpheed was one of those rare gaming moments where I had a specific itch that was fulfilled by a game I just knew would meet my expectations.

PSM. Man that was a throwback. I remember when this game first game came out, and I had no idea what it was. Didn't even know what a "bouncer" was as a 13 year old. I just knew that it was made by Square, and a couple of years later when Kingdom Hearts came out I immediately thought Sora looked like dude from The Bouncer. BTW, hope to see you review Breath of Fire III and IV sometime.

Hey Jared, glad to see you blaze through the quirks in The Bouncer, maybe Square knew better that working with Dreamfactory means rehashing movesets from previous titles to maximise the quantity of games in release (this happened to the Tobal games, literally few changes between each other). By the way, you stream max Payne 2 tonight?
