You can also make pretty decent bows out of PVC pipe. You melt the limbs with a heat gun or stove and taper them out. Awesome vid like usual flite test! I've been inspired to give this a go now!

Probably! I hunt with a 90lb draw compound and have made shots at targets 300 feet away. Please note, I didn't say I HIT the target consistently at that distance, but the arrows did carry that far!

Similar to the flight distance challenge my tenth grade science teacher set up for us. Come up with something that will fly as far as possible which weighed under so many grams/ounces, no power to it, had to be thrown. Had a couple of boys team up to solve the problem. Most of us made something. I came in with a giant balsa wood biplane glider that was really nothing more that a few sheets of balsa wood , some putty on the nose for weight, and some 1/8" strips of balsa wood for the struts. It was about 2 1/2' to 3' long with an equal size wingspan. If I'd had a good wind, or any wind actually, I'd have probably done better, think I managed between 15 and 20 feet. These two, however, came up with one of the heaviest "designs". A baseball, unmodified. Yup, it "flew" further than my design, or any design. They certainly didn't get any style points for that since they didn't do anything, but they did meet the criteria. The challenge didn't actually say you had to make something, just come up with something.

When the plane launched just prior to the end of the video and cheers erupted after landing, all I could think of was the phrase that Tom Hanks shouted in the movie Castaway: *"I...HAVE MADE...FIRE!"* :-D Congratulations Alex (and team) on a superb build!!! :-)

Man, I'll try not to let this get sappy, but I'm a couple beers deep so brace yourselves... Growing up, I was a total nerd, which is apparently cool nowadays, but where I grew up that was definitely not a term of endearment. Instead, it was more likely to get you shoved into walls and watching over your shoulder for the next unexpected and unprovoked aggression from someone who was at least 50lbs heavier than yourself. I love all things aircraft and R/C, and always have, and some of my best friends and best memories are all R/C-related in some way. My best childhood memories with my dad were going to the local fly-in on Memorial Day each year, and seeing all the amazing aircraft that we could never afford, but I wished and hoped I would some day have for myself. Fast forward, and after years of studying and struggle and perseverance, I got two degrees in engineering, ending with a masters' in aerospace engineering. I now have a job for a great aerospace agency that has always inspired me, and yet... I see your videos and it brings a tear of joy to my eyes (I warned you this would get sappy...) And the reason is... never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined a channel dedicated to friends flying and testing the zaniest R/C aircraft would get so many viewers and see so much success. You guys are doing exactly what my closest friends and I used to do, building things for the love and fun of it, and trying to make it fly... and laughing the whole way whether it works or not! For me, watching your videos is a dose of nostalgia, laughter, and this wonderful warm feeling I get from seeing that dorks like me building wacky R/C aircraft are not only having a great time with it, but also getting so much love from other people enjoying it too! (850K subscribers... I mean... WOW!) I'm so happy to see your success with this channel, and enjoy watching your videos so much. I have it pretty good now, but I'm living one of my dream lives through all of you vicariously. You're all awesome, and even though I've never met any of you I still feel like you'd be some of my best friends in another life. Thanks so much for your channel and keep on bringing smiles to all of the other R/C nerds of the world!

I'd love to see a "scrap foam build off". 3 builders, 4 hours (or less), all the unused scrap foam you want. Cut offs, end pieces, you can use a glue gun, BBQ skewers and popsicle sticks only. Lastly, there can be one extra 15 minutes before launch to make flight adjustment then an winner takes all smash up derby.

Oh this is NICE! Thansk for the video. Maybe a suggestion for part 2, make a crossbow stand (maybe even with a ratchet) so you can really launch it and have some glide time. But then again that might not be a simple build.
@michaelupton4178
@michaelupton4178 6 лет назад
I purchased a box of arrows from a sporting goods store they are perfect wing spars.Have been using the same box of shafts for several years. Even if you total the plane strip off foam and rebuild the plane. These were fairly inexpensive arrows black composite shafts, the end that you thread the tips to has an plastic insert with a 4-40 threaded hole. 4-40threaded rod available from LHS or home center connects two shafts together for wing spars or keel beam in fuselage. Leave a gap between the two shaft ends and bend the threaded rod add dihedral to the two shaft spar. I like arrow shafts..
@Seanix197
@Seanix197 6 лет назад
Plans? Making gliders from arrow shafts sounds like a fun build!
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 6 лет назад
A few tips for gliders: first, when they are that small, I recommend that you remove the paper from the top of the wing and sand it into a sort of airfoil, and that will improve the glide ALOT. Also, the wing leading edge should be swept back slightly so that the wingtip has a smaller cord than the wing root and thus decreases tip losses like vortices. And lastly, instead of a barbecue skewer going over the top of the wings, try cutting a dihedral brace from plywood to go IN the wing where the center join is. And lastly, technically because lift:drag ratio is always equal to the glide ratio, a heavy plane could glide very well if it were very low drag.
@3Triskellion3
@3Triskellion3 6 лет назад
Heavier plane = greater lift needed to stay airborne = greater coefficient of lift for any given velocity = greater induced drag = worse L/D
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 6 лет назад
Precisely! Which is why I said "if it were very low drag". For example, the NXT Stream DLG has such a low drag airframe that it has almost the exact same glide ratio at 220 grams as at 600 grams. I believe at 220 its sink rate is 28 cm/sec, and at 600 its sink rate is 30 cm/sec
@waynerussell6401
@waynerussell6401 6 лет назад
L/D and minimum sink are totally different. Low weight will give low minimum sink and LD can be maximized with ballast to give a longer distance flown v height lost.
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 6 лет назад
Right. Well I don't wanna get into an argument. You are right on all accounts; I misspoke. My main point was simply that, generally speaking(at least in my experience) light-weightness has VERY little to do with how a glider glides. That's all. You can check out some of the glider vids on my channel if you wanna see my gliders. Nothing fancy, just balsa DLGs. :) cheers!

Would love to see a challenge to launch a craft from a Trebochet - Most likely a re-inforced Goblin or similar (to withstand the G-forces) 3 parts to the challenge. 1 - Build an effective Trebochet. 2 - the craft needs to survive the launch, and should reach a suitable altitude that would encourage a panic state as it starts it's free-fall. 3 - operator only gets to control the craft from a certain height from the ground to recover and dive bomb a nearby target. EXTRA POINTS: Do it with under Glide conditions - Competitor with longest glide wins after gaining control from freefall.

With catapult launched gliders (CLGs) you balance it (as you did) for a flat gliding flight. Typically one will launch the glider so that the speed of the plane will be greater at launch than at gliding speed. At a higher speed a plane that has lift will curve up into a stall if launched with level wings, and either dive into the ground or fly in a series of stalls. Free flight CLGs are often launched with the wings at an angle to the ground so that rather that going into an upward arc the plane will fly in an arc between perpendicular to the ground and parallel with the ground: this will give you height, but rather than stalling the plane will level out into a glide.

One flaw in the challenge ..... whoever uses the highest mountain wins ! For a "level playing field" , it needs to be a level playing field ! And you need to specify a minimum amount of wing area .... add VERY TINY wings to an arrow and it will go VERY FAR .
@noredcr
@noredcr 5 лет назад
Guillows makes a rubber band launch glider where the wings fold so it can go faster up to altitude and when it slows they unfold and glides. This project needed folding wings.
@ahaveland
@ahaveland 6 лет назад
You're gonna need a bigger bow... High forces over a small distance give a very high acceleration on launch which will have a tendency to rip the wings off so they've got to be strong. Batteries especially need to be secured very tightly!
