This is one of my all time cherished songs. It was recorded the year I was born. My uncle was serving in Vietnam & had not met me yet. By the time I was 2 he was coming home. My dad and mom played it for me all the time. It became part of my soul. God bless our soldiers & all suffering in our tumultuous world. I’m ready to go anywhere that respects choice, peace and love. God bless anyone reading this & especially those who love this song. ♥️🇺🇸♥️

I remember listening to this song with my mother, I was 7, last I was with her. I am 38 now, It one of the only things that trigger memories of my mother. I will always remember living in Stockton, CA, listening to the Golden Oldies radio station, this song would come on, I think my mom liked this song. I always did, might be the first song I remembered lyrics to. So now, I have told that to my daughter, who is the only family I have. I hope she has fond memory of this song , like me. Everyones comments are on point, minus the haters. This is real music made by real artists. Todays "music" is catchy, and fun, but these generations are on two different frequencies. These artist like, The Box Tops, had to play instruments, sing beautiful, be team player, represent themselves well (for the most part) I will always be a fan

While listening to the recording, Thompson didn’t like the husky lead vocal nor the addition of the jet ✈️ sound (which did not make any sense to him). HE WAS SO WRONG… Only weeks later, “The Letter” (1967) turned out to be one of the hugest successes of the decade‼️ At 1:58, the band’s version of the song was the last #1 hit to be shorter than two minutes in length.
