It was my impression that the Shapeshifter could only read the mind + the memories of the person she was actively copying. (In this case, Annie / Starlight.) So in the bunker, when Hughie realized it wasn't the real Annie, the Shapeshifter wasn't immediately aware that Hughie had discovered the truth. (i.e. the Shapeshifter wasn't able to read Hughie's mind.)

This season was so mid. The acting from Anthony Starr and Karl Urban was the best aspect, and their storylines, but other than that, it had so many boring and badly written storylines just to fill the screen time, and each season the show gets more and more plot holes; the first season was the best written, and it's not even close, and the characters have so much plot armor too, which creates more plot holes. Hell, take this episode as an example: Shapeshifter punched MM and Hughie, they has superhuman strength; they punch should've destroyed them, killing them instantly. Gen V season one is much better written; I'll say this is the worst written season of The Boys Universe. I only gave it a 6/10 thanks to Anthony Starr and Karl Urban's acting and their storylines. It's crazy how Daredevil was back in 2015-2018 and it's still the best live-action superhero show; it has the best acted scenes, the best writing, and by far, the best cinematography and, by far, the best storytelling, the best antagonist, the best choreography, etc. If I had to rank the top 10 superhero shows, it would be (not counting the old animated shows, as I don't feel they have aged well, and still, I don't remember everything, so I can't properly rank them). 1. Daredevil 9/10 2. X-Men 97 9/10 3. Invincible 9/10 4. Watchmen 9/10 5. Legion 8.5/10 6. The Spectacular Spider-Man 8.5/10 7. Agents of Shield 8.5/10 8. Loki 8.5/10 9. Peacemaker 8.5/10 10. The Boys 7/10 Y’all should react to Dark, Mr. Robot, Succession, The Leftovers, The Bear, Hannibal, Fleabag, Fallout, Severance, or Ted Lasso.
