You asked "do people really fall for this?" Now might be a good time to bring up that Homelander's "I hear you" speech is damn near an exact quote from a George W Bush speech after 9/11. So, you tell me.

the fact that he wasn't even nominated for an emmy for season two is insane to me. he does stuff just with his facial expressions that's better acting than 90 percent of what's on tv.

One of Homelander's qualities is just how lazy he is and it is a direct result of him being so damn powerful. That hijacker was of no real threat to him or Maeve. Yes, she shot the pilot and that sucks. But after that, there was absolutely no way he could hurt anyone when two incredibly powerful heroes are in front of him. But instead of grabbing the hijacker or the gun with his superhuman strength and speed... He just lazily, impulsively lasers him, fucking everything up. And I'm sure that he couldve absolutely figured something out or one of maeve's suggestions might've worked (even if they managed to save some people). But he was ready to just move on and use this situation in a different, beneficial way. What an absolute tragedy that entire scene is. I remember it making me anxious and upset as hell when I first watched it.
@SataPataKiouta
@SataPataKiouta 9 месяцев назад
While you are correct in everything you are saying about the scene, and Homelander's character, none of Maeve's suggestions would have worked. As The boys is meant to be a dark satyr of Marvel and DC superheroes, with the seven being an almost direct parody of DC's Justice League, this scene with Maeve's suggestions is meant to play a direct joke on all the feats Superman accomplishes that aren't actually supported by real physics in any way. Homelander giving those replies "I have nothing to stand on" and "with the current speed I'll go through the mast" are the actual correct outcomes in terms of physics if someone with the size and strength of Homelander was trying to save something as big as a plane. Something that Superman frequently does. It has been thoroughly debunked from other channels with more scientific knowledge than me so I'll stop blabbering.
@MrRys
@MrRys 4 месяца назад
@@SataPataKiouta well, the nothing to stand on doesn't make sense, because homelander is magically levitating, it has nothing to do with real physics, so he could magically stand on nothing as he always does when he flies

Frenchie is such a great character- he’s probably my favorite member of the Boys (tied with someone else but I won’t spoil it). I love seeing reactors get caught off-guard by how caring and genuine he is, and his interactions with other characters is one of my favorite parts of S1 :)

The fly was actually just a random fly the first time, but the producers decided to keep it in for certain reasons. They felt that the presence of the fly showed the corruption in the world that the characters were having to get through.

Just so you guys don't worry about it, the fly isn't a hidden message. The crew just noticed that so many of their shots happened to have a fly buzzing through that they decide to make it a motif. A handful of shots throughout the season feature flies either visually and/or audibly, when normally they would reshoot the scene

26:13 well, yeah lol Also, the moment that happens soon with Homelander going "and i hear you brother!" Was something lifted directly from a George Bush speech, post 9/11 Look up "homelander george bush" and it should be a minute long video. It's an interesting tidbit, especially cuz the original The Boys comics were (at least partially) critiquing Bush and his governance and policies.

i think a lot of younger viewers (not necessarily eric and sarah, who are smarties) don't really pick up on all of the war on terror connections in the show. it seems obvious to me, but then i was already in my 20s when 9/11 happened. i mean he's literally named homelander, garth ennis is many things but "subtle satirist" is pretty far down the list.

I mean as much as Homelander is a dick, he's not exactly wrong about ''lifting'' the plane. If he flew at it, he'd either punch straight through it, or the plane would just flip over. The only reason Superman can do it is because canonically he has a gravity field around him that he can expand to objects around him

Less fun fact: The plane scene in the original Comic was not just any plane, but the plane that was going to crash into the twin towers on 9/11. The Super heroes redirected it’s course very poorly and crashed it into the brooklyn bridge, killing everyone on board both the bridge and plane.

Homelander actually wanted to save everyone on the flight. It was just impossible to stop a airplane regardless of how strong you are. It would end up being just like the 1st scene of the series where Maeve splits a truck in half by just standing infront of it. If he tried to pick it up it would break in half because it isn't supposed to be picked up. Homelander looks at himself as superior to the military, and doesn't appreciate that he is only called on at the last second because the Military failed. Instead of being the 1st person they call with news about protecting the Americans on the flight. To Homelander its save everyone or no one. He didn't mean to fry the controls it just happened as retaliation to the terrorist shooting the pilot. Ofcourse Superman or Iron Man could've have saved everyone but they've killed just as many people as Homelander just think about every 3rd act of any superhero movie ever.

"People really fall for this crap?" Yeah, this whole show is an allegory. Homelander, a reference to the Department of Homeland Security, the DHS being an extention of the PATRIOT Act, one of the biggest erosions of U.S. law enforcement regulations brought about in the wake of 9/11. It's a power-grab via the exploitation of disaster.

for myself as someone who read the comic, the hijacking was the single most anticipated event in the tv series. they did a great job, even with their editorial changes, which for most of the series have been smart. (this may be hard to grok for folks who haven't read the original material, but the show tones down a lot of it.)

The really cool thing about The Boys, not only the show, is that the idea is a "real" version of what superheroes would be like in our corrupted society, so Homelander is a satire of Superman. If Superman can lift a plane and Spider Man can stop a full train, then Homelander could've definetly saved those people in the plane. What a cold cold person, and we even have barely scratched the surfarce. EDIT: the dolphin scene scared me for life lol
@darkphoenix2
@darkphoenix2 9 месяцев назад
You're off a little bit. They are "real" versions of superheroes, which means real physics applies to them. Homelander wasn't making up that lifting the plane or pushing it wouldn't work. His strength applied to one small part of an aluminum plane would've damaged it. They actually tried to show this a little more realistically in Superman Returns, when he stops the plane from crashing into the baseball field. As it slows down, the nose starts to collapse from the force needed to stop it.
