What the Brady kids did was heartless and mean! They hurt Alice very deep. She loved those kids like her own and never deserved such bad treatment from them. It was like they ripped out her heart and stomped on it! Poor Alice. 😢
And that's why Kay acted the way she did towards the kids. She was there to do one thing....perform her job as housekeeper, not get involved with what the kids (like playing checkers with Bobby and Cindy or basketball with Peter and Greg, or even dance to music with the girls) or even Mrs. Brady (she invited Kay to watch TV with her) do. Also, Kay felt that it wasn't nice the way the kids treated Alice, which purely explains her demeanor. Kind of like giving the kids the cold shoulder treatment. There is a segment on here with Kay in it.
Couple of interesting facts about this episode. 1. This is one of two episodes where Mr Brady did not appear. The other episode was the last one where Bobby sold Greg hair tonic which made his hair turn Orange. The reason Mr Brady did not appear in that episode was he did not like the way the script was written and totally disputed it with the production staff. Therefore, Mr Brady got written out of it. 2. There was a scene cut out from the episode (and I think it can be seen on DVD version of this show) where Bobby and Cindy were going over to swim nude at a neighbor's house. Alice opened up their robes and was shocked seeing the kids naked. She made them go put on a bathing suit. 3. The manager in the diner scene appeared on the show before. First time was during the second season where the boys broke a vase (Remember Bobby saying "Mom says don't play ball in the house?") And they bought glue from a hardware store. The actor played the hardware store clerk who sold the boys the glue. The 2nd time was (also in the 2nd season) where the actor played the clerk at a magic shop who sold a magic kit to Peter (it was the same episode where Cindy was afraid to go to sleep because she saw a kid disappear in a cabinet at a birthday party she attended....remember the disappearing cabinet scene?). I love the scene when Carol rips Greg and Marcia a new one when the truth is revealed. '''I'm afraid sorry isn't good enough.. sometimes when you push people too much, you can't bring them back again'''! So true Carol !
You know what really makes this heartbreaking 💔 is that the kids were ones who messed up (breaking the lamp and leaving the record player on all night) but instead of taking responsibility and excepting their punishment and excepting that they messed up, they acted like brats and laid all of the blame on Alice: Someone who looks out for them and loves them as if they were her own children. They not only pushed Alice away from them and out the house but they also (unintentionally) pushed her out of the family as well (temporarily as they were able to convince her to come back). I wonder what Mike would have said or done had he been in the episode and found out what the kids were doing and how they were treating Alice? I’ll bet he would have been even more furious than Carol was considering that Alice was there for him and his boys not long after he had lost first wife and long before Carol and her girls became part of the family.

It think it's really out of character for the Brady kids to turn on Alice like that after the years they've lived together, and especially immature for Greg and Marcia, being to oldest. Particularly so with Greg, having known Alice the longest.
And the kids have the right to freeze her out! But kids often don't think things through very well ... and they were taught a very valuable lesson they'd never need to learn again ...
I agree first of all Alice definitely is a loyal friend to the girls and the guys and when she walked in the room, she should knock I mean geez you don’t know what’s going on number two she explained it and apologized. I said oh she just asked me who was playing it and I said you were playing it listening to your favorite album. I didn’t know you were gonna get in trouble right there let it go.
The Brady Kids were out of line. Carol asked Alice about the Lamp and the stereo. She had to tell Carol what happened. Alice didn't want to leave but she was hurt and felt the kids couldn't trust her anymore. Carol told Greg and Marcia sometimes when you push people too far you just can't bring thing back again.
That job Alice told Carol about would've been a great job if it had been real. I'd leave a housekeeping job for it. Too bad it wasn't real and she was stuck having to work at that restaurant with Mr. Cranky Boss. It would be hard for Alice having to be in the middle. On the one hand she loves the kids and would rather slit her own wrists than rat on them but when Mr. or Mrs. Brady asked a direct question she had to answer it. I forget what happened with Peter and Greg to get them in trouble but as Alice said "Lately everything I say is something I shouldn't have said." Poor Alice.
..Carol can sense that Alice is full of bunk (2:38), but knows she can't make her stay, if she doesn't WANT to; The 'Bunch' were clearly in the wrong here, because what they said made Alice not feel as if she was FAMILY.....a far more hurtful thing to feel, when you *DON'T* have Family.....(2:06)...
Amazing how in the 70s one architect could afford to support 6 kids, wife and a live in houskeeper on payroll in a large home in southern Cali. As an architect now, I cant evene affor dmy own home let alone could pay the full time salary of a live in maid and support an entire family. Mike doesnt even have his own firm- he's an employee. Shows you how much the dollar has been printed by Fed Reserve and destroyed. I work the same hours, same career, same California location and struggle to afford a two bedroom apartment.
When my parents moved to Canada in the sixties, no matter how poor you were, your rent would cost you 25 percent of your salary. Those days are long gone.
Some old friends of mine once told me years ago that they read that the reason that Alice gave Carol as to why she was leaving was because Cindy was getting on her nerves.
Wasn't that stereo ( hi-fi?) the one Alice won in a jingle contest and said the family all could enjoy it in the rec room? Very generous and thoughtful....
Robert Reed insisted he be written out of the episode because flat out Mike wouldn't have let Alice leave. He would have called a family meeting and gotten to the bottom of it. End of story. But then we wouldn't have gotten that great diner scene! I can't even imagine how stupid Mike would have had to behave to fit the story ... Carol's like, let's just see how this plays out.
Remember the time that Carol was the one to leave the record player on? Alice had won a prize and gotten the record player for all to enjoy since Cindy had stopped being a tattletale ? Carol accidentally left it on and Cindy told Mike she didn't want to tell on her mommy?
Damn did Marsha act like a spoiled brat in this one! Why is it Alice’s job to turn off the record player if Marsha forgot? She’s the one that used it in the first place. Now Alice gets the blame? Alice is not your servant Spoiled princess Marsha! Geez! 🤦🏻♀️
Marcia and Greg got me so mad in that episode the way they behaved cause there the ones that started misbehaving with Alice, i loved Alice in the show she was so nice and caring with a great sense of humor ❤

Carol couldn’t be without a housekeeper for less than 24 hours… before she called an agency to hire Kay! Really? Mike… nowhere to be found in this episode.
"If you turn it on, turn it off." It wastes energy and would drive up the electric bill. Also, if it were on all night like Carol said and the noise were disturbing someone who didn't turn it on, they would have to get up and turn it off.
I'm picturing the music ending, the record still spinning, and the needle going around and around that last groove. Not a big deal (well, I suppose it could wear down the needle a bit) but kind of annoying if you don't like it when appliances are left on for no reason.
Servant!? Alice was no servant. She was a housekeeper but much more than that. She was a friend and part of the family, like an Aunt to the kids. She was very much loved and respected in all episodes-except this one.
Funny in these sitcoms, that the kid characters would do some things that would have resulted in me not sitting down for a week if I did them and was found out, but would be grounded or a privilege removed over a forgetful mistake like leaving the stereo on. 🤦🏻♂️ But then would a teen as old as Marcia or Greg carry such a grudge against someone like the messenger, in this case, Alice, irl?🤔
Even as a kid, I never did like this episode. With all they’ve been through with Alice up through this point hard to believe they would act that way. Especially when they experienced what happened when her twin cousin took over for a little while when alice was on vacation This kind of episode might’ve been better for the first or second season.
The truth of the matter what she had a torrid affair with Greg and she was impregnated she must leave before she shows ..word had it she is having quadruplets unfortunately she had an STD too.. thanks Greg
This episode, although funny and touching in some scenes got on my nerves. Even though the kids should have known better than to blame Alice, Carol shouldn't have asked Alice what she knew in the first place! Adults shouldn't be tattle tales either and kids don't like to be picked on. Alice is basically a member of the family but her job is to clean house not parent. Carol should have gone to the kids herself. She put the all the blame on the children for Alice leaving but she put Alice in a bad position too.
So in Marcias world if she forgets to turn something off it should be Alice's responsibility to turn it off? It's Alice's fault that she forgot to do something? Then gets so mad she turns the other kids against her.... If she were my daughter I'd take everything from her and make learn some goddamn responsibility.. make her realize that she needs to be responsible for her actions
