After rewiring this kitchen a few months ago, I'm back this week installing and reviewing some brand new 30W type-C USB sockets from MK.

As we move forward every few months with new tech and our demand to have the latest and greatest devices increases, we inevitably leave a trail of old e-waste behind us. Electronic waste is a bigger problem than you might think. Not only is it difficult to recycle, but it is often sent overseas and dumped into large landfills illegally. You might have noticed that your new phone (unless specifically asked for) does not come with the usual 3 pin (UK) plug-in transformer!? This is something tech companies have been doing for a couple of years in an effort to cut down on e-waste at source. Lets face it, we all have an abundance of old chargers hiding out somewhere just encase we need one, never mind the fact half of them probably don't even work or are too old for your new devices demand.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new LOGIC PLUS range of USB sockets from MK are here to help as we transition from older plug-in chargers.
As well as having the common USB type-A port, they also come with USB type-C.
ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL.
What is USB type-C?
The USB type-C has been around since 2014 and is a connector that is rotational symmetrical (no more putting it in the wrong way). In general, there are 24 pins in the connector and they can send/receive digital audio, video, data and power. Android smartphones have had this type of connection for a few years now and in 2022, the EU mandated Apple to have their iphones have the type-C connector from 2024. iPhone users should be happy with this decision as the USB type-C allows for faster data transfer speeds and faster charging times. Greg Joswiak Apple's head of marketing acknowledged that the company has no choice but to move over to USB type-C. So either the iPhone 15 due out in September 2023 or it's follow up due out September 2024 will have the type-C.
In essence, the USB type-C is trying to become the go-to unified USB connector for all devices such as tablets, smartphones, laptops, ipads, Macbooks, iphones and all their peripherals.
Features & Benefits:
POWER DELIVERY (PD) PROTOCOL
• The charger will communicate with connected electronic devices using PD protocol to negotiate charging parameters (current/voltage) in order to optimize charging speed and also protect the battery health
• One 30W universal USB PD will be able to power a wide variety of electronic devices
• Charge mobiles to 50% within 30 minutes
THIS VIDEO IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY AND NOT TO BE TAKEN AS ANY KIND OF TRAINING OR EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATION. AT ALL TIMES I AM IN FULL CONTROL OF THE INSTALLATION AND THERE IS NEVER ANY RISK TO PERSONS OR EQUIPMENT. ELECTRICITY SHOULD BE GIVEN THE FULL RESPECT IT DESERVES.

Welcome back you have been missed. Hopefully a well made product? but I won't have entertain one in my house until manufacturers fit a third switch to isolate the USB charger from the mains when it's not in use.
@JBE
@JBE Год назад
I remember when these things first started to appear 10 years ago, my first reaction was "how do I isolate it?" I care less about the isolated AC/DC socket these days and more about being nuked, cancelled or stiffed by AI and the hell that's going guys to bring!

Type A USB. You put it in the wrong way up. So you turn it over, and it still won't go in. So you glare at it, and realise you were correct the first time.
@JBE
@JBE Год назад
100% bang on correct!! Every single time I try to ram these bloody things in somewhere I end up swearing and laughing at the same time. Why on earth didn't they come out with the type-C in the first place all those years ago?
@garethg2501
@garethg2501 Год назад
It's long overdue these type-c outlets, but don't expect the same super fast charging as a proper 3 pin charger. They use about 45W and makes a big difference
@JBE
@JBE Год назад
Yes, apparently they'll soon be pushing 100W through the little type-C connector!! Although I'm not sure all that tech will fit behind a double socket just yet? Not without needing to be in a 35mm backbox.

That socket looks low relative to the worktop, what with wet stuff likely to be splashed around. Are there no regs on min heights above such?
@JBE
@JBE Год назад
I can 100% assure you the socket is in a perfect position. There are no regs to say where they can be installed, only where they can't be.

Good to see tech moving forward but some devices have no inbuilt current charging control devices and will literally burst into flame if connected to the wrong supply (Classic example here e-scooters)
@JBE
@JBE Год назад
I'm all for improvements in technology myself, especially when we can make upgrades to existing equipment like these USB sockets. I'm still a little concerned about smart tech though. Call me cynical but it's all a bit intrusive and 1984 ish. Mark my words, the day is coming when big tech, government and marketing agencies will know where you are in your house and how well you like your toast to be done 😳

Just a quick one if anyone can answer regarding bonding. I replaced an old 6mm main earth for water mains. While doing a board change. This enters property at bolier room at the center of the house. This now has a new 10mm bond. All good. Until I just discovered the plumbers piped in copper under a concrete floor to the kitchen sink. 2 meters away. The 2 copper pipes under the sink seem to be linked with what looks like a 4mm cable. Is this satisfactory or do you need to bring a 10 mm to this location as it pipes come up from the concrete again.
@JBE
@JBE Год назад
There's a few things you can do, and there's a few other variables that's hard to see from this end. Can you perform a continuity test on the pipes to earth and to the stop tap to see if they are connected? You said you did a board change? I take it the installation now has an RCD covering all circuits? Do the pipes break into plastic before the concrete or are they copper throughout?
@ciaranhughes8705
@ciaranhughes8705 Год назад
@@JBE yea the new board is all RCBOs . I checked the continuity between both pipes and it's connected copper throughout, no plastic.

On a job yesterday and the supply to their garage was a swa cable that consisted of a 6mm brown 6 x1mm blue with 6mm earth. So neutral is connected via 6, 1mm cables. I have never seen this cable before. Anyone here know if this is safe. The load should be shared but it's bizzare. I don't want to have to change the cable it's it's safe and sits correct with the regs but I can't find where it's stated otherwise. Cheers to anyone that replies
@JBE
@JBE Год назад
Sounds like split concentric cable. Like other cables if it's terminated correctly, then it should be fine to use depending on load and installation method.
@ciaranhughes8705
@ciaranhughes8705 Год назад
@@JBE thanks. Just searched that 'concentric cable'. Never seen it before. It is supplying a garage and I couldn't see it mentioned in the regs anywhere. Load isn't an issue. Just wasn't sure if the actual cable was suitable and safe.

No James, just the type C cable, thoroughly searched the box for an adapter but to no avail. I do have a convenient double socket that would be ideal to change. The sales staff said "we do sell chargers for £25 if you need one?" I nearly folded into myself with anger!
