We pulled in to the breakaways rest area to camp for the night and took this footage the following morning. It's a lovely spot to stop for lunch or spend the night and if you like birdwatching, 65 species have been recorded and we're still hoping to see them all on our visits.
The Breakaways can be found along the western end of the Hyden - Norseman Road, about 137 Kms from Hyden. The Breakaways are part of the Great Western Woodlands which covers an area nearly the size of England and is located in the Dundas Shire in Western Australia. The traditional owners of this land are the Ngadju people. The Breakaways is known to have been a popular rest spot for Aboriginals travelling through the region.
The Breakaways are similar in appearance to Wave Rock back in Hyden, and Banks Rock however the "wave" is formed by the erosion of the softer rock and soil below the mesa like top which is hard granite. The colors of the breakaways range from red, soft yellow and white, and are due to the different soil types. Sunrise and Sunset make for lovely views of the breakaways. On warm afternoons little lizards and dragons can be seen sunbaking around camp.
Take nothing but photos/video,
Leave nothing but footprints and
Kill nothing but time.
