The Breakup of Bauhaus [ The Complete Story ] 

Though not equally, I love every branch on the Bauhaus tree. There’s a flavor of fruit on each for every mood. People underestimated them as simply goth, they even did reggae. Really good video, man.

I love them all but Love and Rockets are one of my favorite bands. Can’t believe you didn’t mention Peter’s Love Hysteria. I like that more than deep. It’s such a great sounding album.

i saw their show last weekend in San Francisco all reunited and sounding awesome (for a change) ... Peter looks great having finally shaved the head and lost weight; Daniel can still bring it on the guitar though he's lost a step; David J is perfect as always on bass; and his little brother Kevin (one of my fave drummers actually) was excellent ... they are all in their 60s of course and i'm remembering the last time i saw the group in Hollywood 1998 which was an underwhelming attempt to re-connect with the music industry ... they all love playing to American audiences and bring it by preparing and doing their best ... i predict they will press for at least another year and be back around touring in 2023 ... i bought tickets to the Sept 12 show and will be travelling to Wash DC to see them wrap up this tour (they are basically taking July & August off) ... highly recommend seeing Bauhaus now that the old wine is aged to perfection

I love Bauhaus and Peter Murphy solo- also used to really enjoy he and Mick Karn’s “Dali’s Car”. It’s rather different and I usually don’t find too many other people who enjoy it as much, but I totally dig it. Bauhaus’ cover of Ziggy Stardust was my intro to that song, and when I heard David Bowie’s original, I was a bit disappointed. I love it now, but I’ll always prefer hearing Peter sing it. Although labled goth when they first started out, they had a massive punk following here in the north of England, I remember my Dad picking my eldest brother up after a Huddersfield gig (1980/1981), and there were hundreds of punks pilling out of the concert hall lol....to me, it was quite frightening actualy, being 10 yeaes old, sat in the back seat of my dads car.....its safe to say he had to catch the bus back on future gigs....

The british music press constantly ridiculed Bauhaus, in much the same way as they ridiculed Gary Numan. It got to them, they regarded themselves as a great live rock band, which they were.

I loved Duran Duran, and Adam and the Ants at the time, but Bauhaus was always the true one for me still listen to the album 'The sky's gone out' to this day at 56 in 2022. Go search youtube for the Gotham live gig, magical

I didn't realize they were only mere 5 years together, they made such an impact in such a short time and created 4 full albums, an EP plus all the singles not on those records. Kinda like one of their followers Jane's Addiction but more music in even shorter span of time. Also ended the same way, with frontman's ego colliding with others and already being on bad terms when making the last album. Both have made multiple comebacks too.

Actually Bauhaus wasn't one of the pioneers of goth rock! They were IT! ten years before the movement and the movement based themselves on Bauhaus they were Ten years ahead of their time......I was there at their last show at the Old Waldorf San Francisco 1981 watching Peter Murphy go into a trance repeating REDDRESS. I stood in front of Daniel Ash Checking out his moves and equipment along side Brian Gregory of the Cramps dressed in his Beast attire, trying to promote his new band, we stood in aw he and I. It was a small comedy club cafe with a small dance floor used as a stage so you were up there pretty close. It was one of the best shows I have ever seen along side AC-DC with Bon Scott a month or so before he died. As in no one in the states have ever seen anything like it they were breaking new ground. Absolutely Mind Blowing!!! You may have understood it or not, either way you got a sense that history was being made!

David J is an extremely-underappreciated bassist.

Honestly, I think of Burning from the Inside as the first Love and Rockets album, just with guest vocals.

They made the right decision. Bela should never like, become the "Free Bird" of dark post-punk rock (notice I didn't say the G word) I find it frustrating to this day that a lot of people never heard the rest of their music, seemingly, just that one song. It's absurd. They did a lot of fine work, and a lot of it is a lot better than Bela, as much as I love that song too. I think they broke up mainly due to creative differences, differing opinions about how to proceed as a band, and perhaps the other three felt they had ideas which were beyond Bauhaus' framework, and the music made as Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets (and solo works) seem to bear that theory out. At first I confess I didn't take to Love and Rockets at all, I thought they were some slick, produced, almost "mainstream" project, I don't know why, but later I grew to love them, of course. I meant to also say it's somewhat akin to Paul Weller breaking up The Jam: he realized we're at the highest pinnacle we're going to reach creatively, and it's time to go out on that high point, and not repeat ourselves.

Back in 79, living in Northampton, a m8 of mine who's sister was going out with one of the band warned me off, saying they were crap. In 1981 in Das Bunker in Northampton (yeah Northamptonians had a poor grasp of German gender rules) I heard a lot of Bauhaus. In 1982, when Imived to Leeds i saw them with The Cult supporting. Their version of Ziggy Stardust blee away any of David Bowie's veraions, Pete Murphy rocked the stage, and Danny Adh got quite threatening towards the security with his "axe" was a very memorable gig. I saw the Sisters quite aoon after that, another excelkent band, but not gothic tbh

I am stunned that Bauhaus was only together for 5 years. I was in Jr. High when they were together, but lived in a very rural ranching community: Bent, New Mexico. Population 300 We had no telephone; An outhouse in the back. And no cable TV (since there were no cables lines). All we had was the airwaves from the very distant El Paso, Texas which we could faintly the very edge of the desert horizon as we looked down for the mountain. It was the the radio and a black-and-white TV set. Therefore, I had no chance of ever hearing Bauhaus's music. I only discovered them in college when I would see their cassette tapes in the thrift stores in Albuquerque. My assumption was that they must have been together for at least 10 years. Just because of the sheer originality of the music. My thoughts were that it would have taken some time for this sound to have developed. Speaking of what was called "Alternative Music" in the 80's it's interesting to note the parallel of Morrissey and Peter Murphy and how both singers consciously abandoned bands. Neither was an accomplished musician and did not have a strong part in the songwriting, except for influencing melodic line (similar to the electronic duo, Erasure were Vince Clarke's prolific songwriting moved my the voice of his gay muse, Andy Bell). It's kind of ironic that Vince Clarke Depeche Mode wrote all songs for the first alum, then left the band to songwrite somewhere else. YET with Peter Murphy and Morrissey and SINGERS, both were able to garner equal success as in their former bands; and, without losing a basic sense of their original style. An amazing feat. There is something Romantic about a good band or singer being cut-off in their prime (Amy Winehouse, Tim Buckley). And it might have been the healthiest thing to do, given the foolishness (and inexperience) of youth. Yet even as I sit here listening to Erasure's joyful melodies under pristine analog synth blending, something in my heart pines for just one raw, nakedly cut-throat Bauhaus record. Instead of accepting that the music industry still relies on marketing and face-value (in this case Peter Murphy's vampire eyes), the the band should have accepted this and allowed Murphy to lead the band in name. David Stewart let Annnie Lennox lead the way in The Eurythmics. Or look at lovely Sade Adu who was a fashion designer before sining for a jazz band that needed a quick singer. After a few tracks they would suddenly decide to called themselves "Sade," and run with it. And those guys are still together even now, and their music is high-level stuff. Does Sade seem to get all the credit? Yes. But, it's still important to live with a sense of perspective. Next you can detail the Rise and Fall of The Bubblemen, and their startling realization that they were, in fact, giant bees, and their collective near-fatal overdose on Golden Blossom Honey in the early 2000s.

As a huge Bauhaus fan since the 80s I was a tad apprehensive at first to hear an American's take - on stuff that Americans mostly seem to just not really get - but thank-you, I was wrong in my bias, you did a great coverage! And it was good to have your friendly amicable take, as opposed to the typical snooty snob take elsewhere on goth stuff :) ... While I loved Bauhaus I never really checked out Murphy's solo career apart from the main singles in the late 80s. Those didn't overwhelm me to want to hear more; and no-one in clubs that I DJ'd requested them during the 90s or 00s. :( I ought to do so soon, listen to his solo career, as I'm compiling my "best of" Bauhaus playlist. Love & Rockets were good for a late 80s alt-rock group. I bought all their albums, though I don't crave to hear them as I do the more powerful and cathartic Bauhaus material. With L&R I greatly prefer Daniel Ash's voice, find myself skipping other songs. From saying that, Tones on Tail [ToT], the Daniel A and Kevin H trio, mid80s between Bauhaus and L&R, they are imho super awesome and deserve equal if not greater praise as both Bauhaus and L&R. I have perhaps listened to ToT as much if not more than Bauhaus. While L&R was often contrived to be more popular, ToT was more organic, genuine, spontaneous, adventurous, rawer and imho it all worked - for me, perhaps in part because it didn't have David J's vocals. Sorry David! :) It's a bit sad for Peter Murphy that after Bauhaus he wasn't able to come out with 'the goods' that could propel him to lasting solo star status. But hey, what he achieved with Bauhaus was legendary ... Fwiw my impression - could be totally wrong - is the reason Bauhaus dissolved was that Peter is a difficult person to interact with. Fame, attention, stardom are difficult things to cope with.

For all the spotlight on Murphy, Daniel Ash was the real star of the band. From his highly innovative and influential guitar work, to his otherworldly look…he was the lightning rod. It is Ash who gets cited by numerous alternative guitarists as an influence and inspiration, not Murphy.

They are back. A buddy and I stumbled into a dive club in the 80s...we were stoner rockers. Club was having a goth night...they stared at us and we at their white faces. Awkward.

When they got together and did the Gotham concert, that was good as well. Peter came out on stage and said " this is my band and you will respect them." Hahaha , i said yeah pete you tell em hahaha , then they turned the mother out.

I love Bauhaus, I love Love and Rockets and I love Peter Murphy!

I just could not do Love and Rockets. No New Tale to Tell I could do. The rest was so far away from where they started, I just did not buy it. Glad for their success of course, but it just was not anything I liked at all. Peter Murphy on the otherhand, was who I waited for to do something. "Should the World Fail to Fall Apart" I picked up in 1986, on holiday in London. That album is gorgeous. "God Sends" will last me the rest of my life if that was the only song he ever wrote. "Deep" said I stayed with the right person. Well, right for me. I can't say for others. But he was doing what I thought he should be doing, where Love and Rockets seemed to be doing anything it took.

To be fair, I'd have been pretty pissed too if I was holed up in the hospital with pneumonia and my band recorded a ton of stuff without me. Like I love Daniel, Kevin, and David to death, but I have to admit that's pretty fucked up, no matter how irritated they were with the attention Peter was getting.

The British fans during this time used to mock the liggers and arse kissers who used to keep the singers thoroughly clean in the bottom department. Said in a mocking voice "you don't need this bunch of losers, they're just holding you back, you could be the next David Bowie, you've got so much charisma, you could do anything". You still always heard this conversation around singers, and the singers always lapped it up from the moment they could pull more than 100 people in some shitty little hovel of a venue, it was always vomit inducing. A little later I used to go through this mocking speech regularly with Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams, it always had many of us rolling on the floor with the splitting of the sides. It was quite sad with Craig (Lurch) and Gary Marx, you saw the enthusiasm drain from them with all Andrew's sulphate paranoia and egotistical bollocks. Andrew rarely talked to any fans and if he did it usually involved little origami paper packages. Wayne didn't seem to notice he was pissed all the time but he was more like one of us than some big headed "rock star". Hmmmmmmm? Viral Pneumonia, or the singer has been pushing their luck with the sulphate, that stuff was always outstanding for a bands longevity and continued top rate creative output.................😂

Totally straight, but I always thought David J was "The Hot One" of the group....

its not that i dont enjoy Love & Rockets...but in my personal opinion, Daniel Ash's voice just pales in comparison to Peter Murphy's and he deserved his lead in Bauhaus. whenever i discuss this with people...i usually play Adrenalin off of Go Away White as a perfect example of why. listen to Peter against Daniel. especially in that song (like at 3:25 in...man...). Peter is just more suited for the vibe of the band overall. Daniel is so talented but hes no Peter Murphy.
