Daisy came up with a remarkable rifle that fires a caseless .22: The Daisy VL. A fascinating firearm and one of my favorites! The caseless and primerless Daisy VL .22 is outstanding. Come learn with me. Did you even know that this ammo existed? Let me know in the comments below and then join me on Patreon for more USOG. Thanks for watching!

Many thanks USOG for another great video. This time on the (Collectible, discontinued..) Daisy VL rifle, to be used with caseless .2245" slugs + attached nitrocellulose- based propellant. >'VL' stands for Jules van Langenhover, (~ 1.961, Belgium). >Whenever you cock its lever / spring piston + sliding compression chamber, NOT intending to fire it, and NO ammo chambered, (VERY carefully...), you can hold said lever, put safety 'off', then pull trigger and slowly allow cocking lever forward to its uncocked position, just like in RWS- Diana 48/ 52/ 54. (It doesn't have an 'anti- beartrap system' like many newer designs) > Dry firing (Most..) any spring piston air rifle can destroy it. Best regards.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns thanks but I kind of felt like a parrot after posting my comment and then seeing that someone else had already commented with pretty much the same thing except that I didn't know that the man also invented the v/l rifle. I was only aware of the fact that he patented the ammo. Anywho, I enjoyed the video and look forward to more

Those Daisy Heddon VL rifles can actually be fired with pellets as you would a regular air rifle, but in general even with the caseless ammo they're not exactly known for their accuracy compared to a good air rifle. Btw they produced the legacy line of .22 rimfire rifles in the late 80's so I don't think the firearms manufacturing license was the real problem.

A great video, well spoken. I am too young to recall the V/L rifle, what a unique concept. It would be great if a manufacturer could produce ammo for this once again. Here is a good question: could the ammo be called a cartridge? It is missing two components, the case and the primer!

Very interesting...I had no idea Daisy ever made that. I have heard of that Voere you mentioned and as I recall it used electronic ignition instead of a primer. I have no idea if it worked and I have never laid eyes on any kind of gun that Voere has ever made.It seems in recent years that I don't hear much about further developments in caseless ammo. I do hear about, and have seen, cartridges whose casing is made with light weight materials other than metal.

I had one of these 20 to 30 years back. Mine had a case with it and some type of plaque. The one I had was very interesting as the serial number was 0000 the best I remember. I was told it was possible that it was a salesman model that a salesman would take to gun stores and hardware stores to show and take orders with. Mine had a place in the case that 3 to 5 boxes of the ammo you had there fit into the case to display as well. I did read a lawsuit that involved Daisy describing exactly what you stated that Daisy was not licensed to build firearms and this was considered a firearm.

Hi Steve - that is the lowest serial number gun I've ever heard of! Interesting end to the story of the VL - I guess Daisy should have studied things a little more.

Yes i remember the Voere, it was a very european styled little bolt action with a cartridge in the .222/223 size. I think they were trying to develope the caseless system into something the military would be interested in. But there were problems, one being if the propellant block got wet, it tended to swell, another issue with the caseless system is, what happens if you have a loaded round and you do not fire it ? How do you unload the round reliably ? Also wasn' t the voere electronically fired ? But as you say, there is nothing really wrong fundamentally with cased ammunition, apart that the manufacturers could make rounds cheaper to make, if there was no brass.

I never seen this before quite interesting reminds me of air rifles that Lewis and Clark took on their expedition across America the pressure chamber was in the stock and a kind of cork screw was pulled out and then set on a tree or sorts then pumped up I think they were .36 or .45 cal the reason they took a couple on the trip was it did not make noise and to cut down any weight possible also Napoleon wanted the Armies he fought in Europe to stop using them so they must have been well made and reliable do you have one in your collection ? I really enjoy your video's
@gregkerr725

I also heard those air rifles were pretty powerful and also rapid fire (they held upwards of twenty balls that could be rapidly fired). They evidently used to have firing displays for the Native Americans and it is speculated that having seen such rapid fire displays that the Indians chose to leave the exploring party alone.

I have an old JC Higgins 22 semi automatic that will shoot 22 shorts ,long and long rifle can you explain the mechanics of what makes it different versus one that Will only shoot long rifle
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 лет назад
Hi Jerry, I had one of those years ago. Fine rifle. One of the ways to accomplish S/L/LR operation in a semi is to use a floating chamber. I'm not certain that the Higgins uses that system but the Remington 550-1 came out around that time and also digested S/L/LR - and used the floating chamber. I assume the Higgins did as well. A long rifle only semi has a fixed chamber so only the long rifle has enough power to operate the blow back mechanism - which means - push the bolt back, eject the empty brass, compress the bolt spring, cock the hammer or striker; then the return spring returns the bolt to battery and it happens all over again. The floating chamber system uses the mass of the chamber itself to operate the blow back system since the short brass does not have enough mass and momentum on firing to do so. The short and long brass cling to the floating chamber and together they have enough mass and momentum to operate the action. Hope I explained this in an understandable way.

You mention seeing some experimental rifles that held powder in a reservoir and metered it into the chamber. I’m having trouble finding any more information on this. Do you recall any more details?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 3 года назад
Hi Leroy - Here is a link to the H&K - which was a little different from a reservoir - I've seen powder reservoir designs, even liquid powder injection. The H&K is pretty close...and still didn't succeed. Hope this helps. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_%26_Koch_G11

I think it's trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. Essentially it is the attempt to turn a rifle in to a power station removing the need for the pre meditated manufacturing process of the cartridge. It's like trying to turn a Tesla back in to a combustion engine.

While I knew about the military experimenting with caseless ammo I didn't know that daisy had a rifle for it. Have you ever heard of dieseling an air rifle. The theory is with a pump up type of air rifle you put a little oil inside the skirt of the pellet. pump up the gun and fire, the compressed gas is supposed to ignite the oil, giving the gun much higher velocity.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 лет назад
Hi John, I've heard of this, and inadvertently even caused dieseling by over oiling the compression cylinder. The only thing I don't know is if the ignition of the oil caused higher velocity. Theoretically it could but petroleum burns slowly. As far as I could tell I was just getting oil smoke - which looks dramatic but maybe doesn't mean much else. Maybe someone out there knows more/better.
@jasonsfishingagain312
@jasonsfishingagain312 5 лет назад
So it has a pneumatic charge. If you were to put a standard .22 pellet in, will it fire out the bore? If so, what is the velocity difference? If it does not have the power of a long rifle, but some air rifles are capable of near .22 LR performance, where does this one sit?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 лет назад
Hello, A standard .22 won't work as it has a case and the priming compound is in the rim of the case. The firing pin in a conventional .22 crushes the rim on one spot and that impact causes the priming compound to ignite, which in turn ignites the main powder charge. The Daisy does not have a chamber for a cartridge and has no firing pin. As far as power - I have not measured but penetration in wood is about the same as a .22 Long Rifle.
@jasonsfishingagain312
@jasonsfishingagain312 5 лет назад
Thanks for the response but you misunderstood. I meant a standard .22 pellet, as in an air rifle pellet. Would it fire with just the pneumatic charge? Or is the powder charge required? I am wondering how much power the powder charge offers over just the compressed air required to ignite the powder charge.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 лет назад
James! I'm so stupid! - I should have figured that out. hahahaha - and great question. I ran to the vault, loaded a .22 pellet and it works! But....it is slow...maybe 3-400 fps. I think the narrowing at the chamber creates the heat and pressure - but you are very smart to know the gas is still useful - even with no caseless cartridge. Thank you for asking. I learned something.
@jasonsfishingagain312
@jasonsfishingagain312 5 лет назад
USOG not stupid. I just didn't represent myself clearly. Thank you for your response and for looking into that. I have to wonder what kind of charge they used that only offered another 5-600 fps. It's almost like a solid oil as opposed to powder to create a dieseling effect. Thanks for all you do. I find your videos extremely informative.

I don't fully understand how this rifle works. Seems to be an air rifle with the spongy stuff behind the bullet/pellet is some kind of propellent. How is the propellent sponge ignited exactly? Or does it work by some other mechanism? If it is a propellent, is there issues with fouling?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 лет назад
Hello b. griffin - You're on the right track. The compression of air creates sufficient heat when forced through a small hole for ignition - much like a diesel engine except diesel is a liquid and the propellant is a powder for the VL. There is a jet effect as well - but the basic concept is compression causing heat directed to an appropriate propellant. Hope this makes sense.

Also i must add the propellent is ignited from 2000c stream of air forced through i very small port... an Obturator (obturator/ignitor) to compress the air as it is pushed through a tiny hole. The air then heatedgets pushed through the small hole enough to ignite the propelent... im sure but dont quote me of this that the propelent is an after product from nitroglycerine.....
