@@jlupus8804 His Twitter is active but he's put a "2017-2019 RIP" tag on it, so I'm guessing he's gone defunct with this RU-vid project. A shame... I loved that he was one of the few to actually take a critical look at why people love L4D and I was looking forward to more stuff.
Sorry, 4th guy just logged in, had to do it to you. If there's any comfort in it, the 5th guy is waiting to be on the team for the 19th times in a row.
Turtle Rock, too, it's just that the majority of the staff ended up joining Valve after the split. Only a few people who worked at Turtle Rock stayed when it separated.
WHY is NO ONE talking about how the entire L4D concept was COPIED from the Garry's Mod Zombie Survival community. For like 4+ years prior to L4D's announcement, G-Mod users made custom maps and played co-op zombie missions. The G-Mod Zombie Survival Community had over 20+ servers, each with unique maps. The popular map layouts and themes were copied by L4D and improved. The G-Mod Zombie Survival community was stoked for L4D to be released. Myself and almost everyone else played L4D after its launch and were impressed. The G-Mod Zombie Survival Community quickly disappeared. Half Life 2 (Engine) --> Garry's Mod (Sandbox) --> Zombie Survival Community (Genre) --> Left 4 Dead (Franchise)
@@KK-rt9yethe reason nobody talks about It is because It didn't, the developers had been developing the game back when they were Still developing counter-strike source ie before Garry's mod First version came out.
While the game itself was fun as hell, to be honest its the characters I remember the most, they weren't generic "army" guy squad with military equipment like a lot of "coop" shooters, they were survivors and exuded personality, even the "army guy" Bill was unique in his own right, still remembered, and even people who weren't into L4D can notice him at a glance and the same goes for other characters as well, for the most part.
L4D2 is the only game I play. I play on Steam and have about 200 campaigns. I can play it forever I think. It has a real feel to it that no other game has. Other games feel like games. With this game I feel like my survival is really on the line. I wish they'd make a third one. With so many campaigns to replay it will never die or get old, but I'd love a new one.
while Valve wont make L4D3 it was announced that (i think turtlerock.... if im correct) said they will make "Back 4 Blood" wich is going to be like L4D. hopefally.
@@leehunter1246 a day usually 20 thousand to 30 thousand play daily so.... Yeah there are new games from 2018 with only 2 thousand players a day so its very much so popular and played heavily lol
Thank you so much for making this. I've always praised the L4D games for their excellent design but no one has ever highlighted why it's captivated people for so long after it's release.
Excellent video but I think you missed a good detail: the introduction video. Left 4 Dead 1 intro teaches a lot about the mechanics (car alarms, "Louis: Run or shoot?" "Bill: both!" Implying the heavy emphasis on constant movement while dealing enough damage to run), special infected (Hunter punishes Louis because he ran away from the group) and I think they also added the audio cues and themes when the horde and special infected appear. Sadly, L4D2 skips this for a more action focused introduction.
L4d2 intro imo had the purpose to introduce new characters, environments and especially the new special infected. I think it would have been pointless to reintroduce those game mechanics all the players already knew about.
No l4d2 does show stuff like: New gore Jockey Mudmen Spiter Charger Clown Hazmats Smoker And mechanics like: Jockey jumps on head and controls Spiter spit acid Charger grabs surviver and pound him Hazmat zombies are immune to fire Smoker grabs players and drag them And the gore system was introduced Edit: this from the trailer
Left4Dead: Pills here! (Here buddy, lets' win this!) TF2: MEDIC!! (I really don't need the heal, just spamming "E") Overwatch: I need healing. (B*tch you better heal me, you better follow me, I better not die or else I'm blaming you!)
Yeah exactly, the clip he cuts to about the witch is from my perspective and if you look the witch is Hitler because I don't know why. I usually just reskin or change the music like how my tank music is "Are you ready for a miracle?"
Another cursed thing (don’t know if it’s in the new update) but sometimes a line will play during death toll that is using the original voice actor from the beta

@@KK-rt9ye and all MOBA's like LoL and DotA came from StarCraft. Everything is borrowed or recycled in some way. I wasn't aware of that, but that's dope that Garry's Mod had that. My favorite right now is Vermintide 2, looking forward to when I have enough $ for Darktide eventually too. IMO Fatshark evolved this style/genre of gaming, even with their stupid DLC and cash grabs.
I like how he said its NEARLY impossible to play left 4 dead without teamwork cause you still have some people that are able to speedrun campaigns on realism mode completely by themselves lol
I love how it promotes staying together as a team. Unless you have flawless, godlike aim and awareness of your surroundings, it’s really ill-advised to run off on your own. One pinning Special is all it takes for you to regret leaving your team. While it isn’t impossible to run off on your own, it requires your full attention and the best you have to offer.
This may sound silly, but this game has helped me in difficult situations many times already. Seriously, shooting zombies with friends is one of the best ways to cure your depression :)
woah woah woah. woah. at 0:25 you say turtle rock studios made left 4 dead. this is not true. even more so at how terrible back 4 blood was. Turtle rock studios had like 3 people work on the game itself. Left 4 dead is made by valve. Not the creators of evolve.
Still playing this masterpiece to this day, the replayability is nothing short of insane. Probably the most replayable game ever, especially with mods and custom maps.
because Valve weren't involved like the last time that is why B4B is soulless garbage Valve were the ones who carried L4D Turtle Rock were just the guys with the Idea only 6 Devs from Turtle Rock worked on L4D the rest of the all Devs were Valves Turtle Rock are the creators of Evolve they are not the creators of L4D as they claim
I remember when i was young . 10 yrs ago , me and my bestfriends finished this game with so much passion, we shout , we get knocked down from the the chair , we stand on the chair because of so much fear hahaha wow those golden days thanks Valve! cant believe thats was 1 decade ago just wow
But they didn't do the same to the second game because they wanted to try something new instead of a grey depressing aesthetic but instead a more bright, comedic and Badass/kickass feel and it works
@@SchazmenRassir i dont blame you, but with the fact how the first game only tells the story of how the country have fall apart in just a few weeks and only provide a small story for the characters (the comic kinda redeems it) before the sacrifice dlc which is pretty much exist with l4d2 making them less interesting than in the second game.
I started playing this game in high school, now I'm almost halfway through college. I have more than 1000 hours in the game and a lot of my friends in high school thought I was so crazy to be so obsessed with Left 4 Dead 1. Everyone always brought up the 2nd one but I always loved Left 4 Dead. In fact, it was so much my favorite game, my friend asked me to Homecoming with a Left 4 Dead poster. I love this game and still play it sometimes!
@@broookville I didn’t bring it with me, but he did to it at a classroom assembly. He was an exchange student from Hong Kong and the poster said “Don’t Leave me 4 Dead, Homecoming?” It was very sweet and we are still friends to this day :)
@@bananafone1414 Thinking of playing games like left 4 dead, halo, and games like that with my little brother and friends. Me and my friends/brother still play online together, and have lots of fun but not really the same since I moved away. I probably shouldn't have typed a paragraph when I just woke up and I'm getting ready for work.
@@the_more_you_know_8452 damn. I wish everyone went back to the 360 and ps3 for just one day. It would be fun everyone playing together again like in the old days. I actually still play the 360 to this day. It's the only console I bought and owned.
Very informative video. Left4Dead was literally a game that made me love first person shooting but after a while, experience many notable lessons such as team work and welp, hopefully effective planning
This was the game along with L4D2 where i met so many of my friends on steam. The amount of hours that we put it all trying to get every achievement, the absolute terror and even the masterful plays during versus mode. The list goes on and on. I never once had a bad time playing this game.
Not sure why this showed up on my recommendation feed, but this video highlights what B4B did not do for sure. Hard to believe that is a turtle rock product tbh.
I have been playing this game since release and still am to this very day with friends! Nice video man, I have always felt the amount of work that was put into this game was underappreciated.
Leading players on a string through GAMEPLAY is the next gen innovation I keep looking for in games. Sadly, studios keep thinking that pretty pictures are all it takes.
Yep, haven't stop playing since 2008, both L4D1 and 2 will always be two of my most favorite games. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, I enjoyed the quality commentary.
launch day l4d: 4 survivors of zombie apocalypse shooting endless zombies today l4d: 4 anime virtual youtubers shooting different monster from minecraft god i love this game!
The TheBestPlayerEver has joined the game TheBestPlayerEver Rush alone Smoker incap TheBestPlayerEver TheBestPlayerEver : help me you f*cking NOOB other team : but you far away TheBestPlayerEver left the game Smoker killed coach survivor minus 1 survivor : wth
Left 4 Dead was amazing. I didn't even play it much. I had it on the 360, and played in for maybe 9 hours in my entire life, but I remember. I remember it as an adrenaline filled frenzy. It's been years, longer than most college degrees, but I remember the fun.
Amazing video. One thing I would like to add is the music in L4D. If you pay attention it can notify you when a horde is inbound, what infected has spawned in etc. Really engaging players one step further
It's so weird to me that no one ever seems to talk about VS mode when talking about what made left 4 dead great. I always found it had the perfect balance of the AI director and humans combining to give an additional sense of menace as the humans and the special infected were so much fun to play.
I mentioned it in another comment but I did originally mention VS mode but it went over many of the same rules and guidelines as the campaign. Made it feel repetitive, so I had to cut it.
@@chasny4588 Nah I just looped DeadSpace 2 in because of it's PvP multiplayer it kind of created a survival horror Co-operative experience also so I mentioned it.
Don't get me wrong, this is my favorite game and I still play it to this day, but this whole "STAY-TOGETHER" design is a bit overrated. Once you're fluent with the mechanics and know the maps, you'll notice that you're capable of beating the maps even solo, except the parts when you die to bad RNG and general inconsistency with the SI. Smokers immediately pulling you right after a bullshit spawn, jockeys that will ignore your M2 50% of the time even when your timing seems perfect, hunters scratching you for 40 hp even though you knocked them back, the list goes on. Special infected being able to spawn at any moment behind any wall is pretty fun most of the time, but sometimes the spawns get so stupid that it just removes any tactic from the equation. It's like, you're not supposed to go alone, because a hunter will spawn behind a light pole and pounce you at the exact moment when you're trying to block a jockey. Technically you can just get attacked by 3 SI out of nowhere during a horde, so the optimal strat is basically to stick to melee against common infected, so that you always have a full clip against SI, which doesn't sound like good design at all. Again, I genuinely consider L4D the best zombie shooter, but this video just repeats stuff that has been said about the game ages ago, rather than a relevant analysis.
Omfg I HATE expert hunters... Such assholes they are. Especially on Last Man on Earth. You get pinned in that mode (on expert) there is a 90% chance you are dead...
Don't forget the flabby backhand slap from a charger when they charged into a wall and they stumble around in which they SHOULDN'T be able to do anything, bam 20 damage, or was it 15 or expert. But yeah, those 40 damage hunter scratches were just ridiculous, you knock them back, you see them stumble backwards and without any animation you hear a scratch and get 40.
It’s super overrated. I said this in another comment; diehard fans of the game act as though playing the game is like journeying through the jungle in Vietnam worrying about the cong coming from the trees Praise is definitely in order but the depth and difficulty of the campaign game is vastly overstated imo
@@charleswashington3973 Difficulty is laughable at best, the only way any semi experienced players get killed on realism expert is if the spawn director completely fucks them over. The biggest threat are your teammates hitting you on accident for your entire hp in one shot. Completely agree with you, it was an amazing game, i still play it, but every time i get back i notice more and more stuff i get frustrated with. Game is aging fast
The music thou, the MOST nerve-wracking moment I ever had in games is when the ending music starts playing as someone start screaming at me "TANK'S FULL, GET IN!!!" as zombies started screeching
What a well made and accurate video! I was playing L4D2 with my friend just yesterday, introducing her to the second installment after beating the first L4D! Keep it up man! I hope your video will show others that this is a good game, and will enjoy as much and as long as I have!
