I know you're just memeing, but Britain didn't take the potatoes, the blight did. Ireland's dependence on one, very vulnerable variety of potato basically did them in. Admittedly Irish farmers/land-owners--many Anglo-Irish (back to the Normans)--weren't very helpful but since this all comfortably predated Live Aid, it sort of couldn't be helped. Historically, famine has been a common thing stalking human populations. During the potato blight, potato crops all across Europe were ravaged. common people all over Europe were tightening their belts, and not for the first time. Unfortunately, again, due to Ireland's unique dependence, this was extremely catastrophic.

Hawaii has the Union Jack on its flag because it was a British protectorate for nearly 5 months in 1843, and the Hawaiian king had flown it out of respect for King George III and as a sign of friendship with Britain. The Union Jack was incorporated into the Hawaiian flag in 1816, along with red, white and blue stripes. The flag has remained unchanged since then, even after Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1898.

My English father married my mother in Fiji and took her to New Zealand where I was born. His English family loved having my mother in the family. So much for the English being racist. The Thirteen Colonies were not a distinct entity. They were just those which rebelled against British rule. Other British colonies to the north and south (Florida, Vermont, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and the various Caribbean island colonies) were just as much a part of the social and political community of British North America due to their interconnected nature. Also, Canada was not a fully independent entity until 1982!

Before Canada joined the empire in 1763, British America consisted only of the 13 Colonies, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia
