Unfortunately this is a common mistake which the video also made. Nowhere in an Irish passport will you find the words "Republic of Ireland ", for this reason you will also see on an Irish car's number plate the blue rectangle which has IRL and not ROI. Article 4 of the Irish constitution states: "The name of the State is Éire, or, in the English language, Ireland." Strangely, many British don't actually know the name of their neighbouring country, which is the case in this video. It must be unique in the whole world for a country's population to not know the name of their neighbour, it is certainly strange.

I think you may be referring to Brittany there - as that is literally what the 'Great' bit of GB is distinguishing Britain from. Not Ireland. Never was.
Ireland is not a British Isle. Ireland lies mostly in Irish Territorial waters not British Territorial waters. The Majority of citizens on the Island of Ireland are Irish citizens not British citizens. Ireland can no longer be called a British Isle since it regained its Independence and Territorial waters in 1922.
I've never heard the term "a British Isle". ( _As this video says_ , the term "British Isles" is a geographic term [nowadays, _only_ geographic]. It does _not_ imply any territorial claim.)

The word "isle" is hardly ever used nowadays, except by poets, and - in the plural only - in geographical-only names for regions - the Western Isles, the Scilly Isles, the British Isles. I repeat, I've never heard anyone refer to a "British Isle", in the singular. I certainly wouldn't refer to the island - or isle, if you must - of Ireland, as British.

The term British Isles is not used or recognized in anyway by the people or government of Ireland. It is a political term or a colonial term, its not a geographical term. Its a term that belong in the past, the correct term is the British and Irish Isles or simply Britain and Ireland.

Why do some British people insist on using outdated colonial terms like the British Isles that imply Irish people are British and British dominion over Ireland? They will argue that it's a geographical term as noted in this video when it is obviously a possessive term i.e. the islands of Britain. However, Irish people are not British and never have been. We are not from Britain. The term derives from the ancient Greeks in reference to the Pretanic people who lived in Britain at that time. The Pretanic people did not live in Ireland so Ireland was never a Pretanic island. Neither the Govt. of Ireland nor the British Govt. use or encourage the use of this terminology. So, what is going on with the British psyche here that there is a need to try and portrait Irish people as British?

@@condorone1501 The British Isles cover all the Isles including the British Islands; the latter, which by definition, are not inclusive of Ireland either the island or the Republic. Northern Ireland is both within the UK & the British Islands. The Isle ofMan Jersey & Gernsey are not in the UK, just the British Islands( not to be confused with the Isles.
@@petesquire2954 I suggest you do a search on Ireland and its Territorial waters. Ireland regained its Territorial waters in 1922. Northern Ireland occupies 6 counties out of 32 counties on the Island of Ireland. This does not make it a British Island. It does however make Northern Ireland part of the UK. Helpful for some but insulting to every Irish person. Ireland is not part of the British Isles and the Irish are in no way related to the British. The Irish have the same relationship with the British as the European Jewish had with the Third Reich.

@ahsanurr4219 Ireland is my home and the home of the Irish nation. A home our ancestors fought to free from British oppression and a homeland worth fighting for. We are separate from the British island and the British nation and proud to be separate. Ireland is an island nation and part of the Euorpean Family of Nations. All geography is political and all politics is geographical. Language is a powerful thing and british persistence with Old relics like "British Isles" will be rejected at every turn. At best its lazy and ignorant but I reckon it's use in some smarter quarters is to be subtly suggestive of British dominion over Ireland. Ireland is no longer a slave of Britian so I hope you can see where I'm coming from. IRELAND IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE A BRITISH ISLE. We have earned that.

@@TheTipplad well you hold no sway here. We will continue to call the archipelago by its recognized name of the British Isles. Plus it's easier to say than the British and Irish isle, or the English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Manx Isles. And yes the history between Britain and Ireland is quite bad, but we have moved on from that now.
