Quite a lot has changed since this video came out. Some changes that have happened as of December 2022: 1. Queen Elizabeth II is no longer the reigning monarch. Her heir, Prince Charles, succeeded her following her death and became King Charles III in September 2022. 2. Barbados became a republic in November 2021 and no longer has a monarch. 3. The United Kingdom is no longer a member of the European Union (cf. 1:57) following Brexit. 4. The status of the British Indian Ocean Territory as one of the British Overseas Territories is currently in limbo after the International Court of Justice ruled in February 2019 that the UK unlawfully separated the Chagos Archipelago from the rest of Mauritius. This ruling was affirmed by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in January 2021.
As a Welsh Brit, this is really encouraging to find someone from the other side of the pond who knows what they're talking about. Will be saving this to circulate.
for the people that are saying that they don’t care, that’s fine, but at least keep in mind that this does bug people who are from these places. if you know this, it’s refreshing to them because a lot of people don’t like being referred to as being from ireland when they are from england or another territory. it’s like being korean but being called chinese, or being hispanic but being called spanish.
Valid point except for the examples at the end as they’re not exactly comparable. Korean people and Chinese people speak different languages, have different accents, and can look different. And Spanish people are Hispanics but I get your point
As an American viewer watching this again, I found it quite a useful explanation of the difference between "England", "Great Britain", and the sovereign state known as the United Kingdom! These differences are the reason why I have sometimes heard it said that Elizabeth II was _not_ a "Queen of England" (to use the common, informal phrase), but a "Queen of the United Kingdom": because the United Kingdom isn't England! Thanks for the video!
Mexico and Canada are in the geographical area known as America but only people from the USA are American. Ireland is in the geographical area known as the British Isles but only people from the UK are British.
The Queen (and now King) can be both King of the UK and King of England, though. Similar for Australia. I understand Charles becomes King of Australia when he steps onto our soil. That doesn't stop him from being King of the UK and other dominions at the same time. (When he leaves our soil, he reverts to being our constitutional head of state). Mad, eh. That's why we love it.
When I meet people online, they ask me where I'm from and I reply with "Wales" then they ask "where's that?" and I reply with "A little country next to England" and then they say "Ireland?". It kills me on the inside everytime.
I’m Scottish and have lived and worked in the US for three years. Everyone here thinks my accent is Irish. I don’t mind a bit, but it gets embarrassing when people start going on about their Irish roots and where their Irish ancestors came from. Americans tend to talk fast and loud, so it can take a little time to get it into the conversation I’m not Irish. On one occasion I didn’t want to embarrass a lovely elderly lady among her friends, so I became Irish for one evening.
Barbados became a republic on November 30th, 2021 and left The Commonwealth Realm on that same day. The way they became a Republic is by amending their constitution. And that's how Barbados became a Republic. 🇧🇧
Slight correction of shortly after 0:23: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are absolutely not "sovereign" countries; they are constituent countries of the sovereign United Kingdom.
I think it is still named "Soveign" when there is a King or Queen, that is Soveign to that nation. I think this still exists, somehow, if my understanding is correct, is it not ? I know know that there has to be an underlying thing going on as well. Kind of like, how that "cousin of the Korean prince" is and could take back control of their soveignty... if indeed.. Well, they just could.
“...and The United Kingdom are Members of the European Union” About that.... EDIT: To everyone telling me this video was made in 2011, and things change; That the point, I’m saying the joke didn’t age well
@@neeha9449 not yet. iirc some time in december is the 'final' cutoff (we've blown past so many government-set deadlines already i hardly think this one is any more likely, though iirc there is something different about this one) so so far we've lost in terms of gdp about as much since the referendum as britain payed into the eu in total over all the decades of membership. and ofc those losses will be worse once we leave. even IF there was no human cost to this bullshit it'd be an unmitigated disaster *already* & it hasn't fucking happened yet. but ofc there will be (more) human costs.
@@neeha9449 They even have pushed out the right to stay in UK application deadline until end of June 2021 already, even thought Brexit takes effect end of this year ;) I just received a letter saying that I can ignore the fact that my driving license expired and that it is automatically valid for 11 more months due to some negotiating going on with the EU etc... it does not look like they will be finished any time soon... ;)
I always feel bad when I have to pause or slow down the playback speed of a video just to keep up. I usually only turn the playback slower if I’m trying to force my brain to sleep. I feel your pain.
Speaking for myself, no not really, unless someone says "London" like it's a country. Otherwise most British people would have a bloody hard time describing (or knowing) all of the exact definitions and borders CGP himself explained, and thus empathize with the confusion.
Unfortunately the very nature of the UK isn't taught in schools, and the only real sense of nationality we get is through sport and sports teams etc, so there are many who think that England, Scotland, Wales and N.I are separate sovereign entities, so no, they don't laugh cause they don't even know half the terms xD
I have always been confused about this. Thanks! I’m just glad this wasn’t a lecture in class with a test at the end. My head is spinning. I need to make my own slide show and teach this to my family.
I always set the video speed to at least 2x (a browser extension lets me go further) and I didn't even notice a difference between this and any other video.
Damn, I had to check when the video was uploaded after reading this because I just assumed it was at most a couple years old. This style of video really did hold up well and I'd almost say it was ahead of its time, considering how many more channels are cropping up lately in a similar-ish style.
@Mike D "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom or Britain, is a sovereign country located off the northwestern coast of the European mainland."
No, you don’t get it if your not Indian. We broke free after we a guy murdered Gandhi. If we kept his ethics, or so you call them we would have gained independence much later.
@@sharanyakannan3799 that guy made Nehru the PM and destroyed the whole future of country. There was Patel the best candidate for it. If he'd've lived more then India now would be in a million pieces.
Well it's really 5 minutes. Maybe in class he looked at the clock and saw that 5 mins left. So he started talking "slowly" like this and a student recorded his lecture and posted on youtube to make fun of him. Instead it became popular and Grey started using RU-vid. Hence we got him. But it's just a theory. A LAME THEORY.
A rare video that I actually had to slow down the playback speed to 0.75. Unlike most videos which don't provide much information...this provided useful info 100% of the way!
Yes, finally, My confusion of this subject matter has clearly been affirmed and extended beyond comprehensive understanding or desirability of further details! Thanks
You just took what would take a (US) school teacher an entire class period and explained it with as much depth in five minutes. My hat's off to you, sir.
I am from a place that keeps referring to the UK as "England", even though it is technically ruled by the Scottish monarchy. Similarly we refer to the entire Maoist empire as China even though that is just one of the provinces. Same story for Holland and Prussia.
+edgartj17 Actually Westeros is just called the seven kingdoms, but it doesn't actually have seven kingdoms. It was when Aegon conquered Westeros that there were seven kingdoms ruled by their own kings. There ain't no room for mistakes!

+Matt Warwick It's in England and therefore in the United Kingdom. If it was in Scotland it would also be in The United Kingdom. The U.K. clears up a lot of potential confusion. I have read though that Cumbria, was celtic until the 10th Century, with its own language Cumbric. If it had remained isolated, it might have developed into a separate country being neither Scotland or England.
Actually thats how you HAD to speak back in the old days of youtube. All these videos were short & fast back in "the beginning" lol. I think it was some kind of "rule" back then, if you didnt talked fast, people switched to other video. I have noticed that lately these kind of videos are longer (~10min) and no longer said in cadence of submachine gun.
Caitlin Smyth I’m glad they’re leaving, they are saving themselves from socialist policies and mass migration past the point it already has gone to (London)
That would be great for teachers too! But someone decided we have to put on a show, with different activities, using a range of ‘skills’, showing ‘progress’ every 5 minutes!! Basically wasting time!!!!
@@bruhngl No. Not at all. Asia pacific/Australasia, is simply a geographical area. The continent is Australia. It's the only Country who is it's own continent.
No joke, I've started just about all youtube videos at 2.00 speed. For CGP Grey and PBS Idea Channel I'll sometimes drop to 1.75 or even (gods forbid) 1.50.
That's probably what happened the first time when he spoke normally and realized his mic wasn't on. He then got frustrated, turned on the mic and recorded this voice over.
I usually watch videos at 1.5x speed, but for this one I actually had to slow it down to 1.25 to follow it.. so congratulations, you actually got me to slow down a video for a change SuperVinlin
I remember reading that during an Olympics medal ceremony, Canada, Australia, and the USA won gold, silver, and bronze (don't remember which country for which medal).. but a British commenter said something along the lines of "all Britain's colonies". so England really wins.
@@spartythespart …and sued for peace in 1814 after losing to the British and having your very centre of government set ablaze 🙂. The Brits ultimately gave the US their independence.
I put this on 1.5x in place of 0.5 which i wanted to since i wanted to actually register the content for later proper memory. Man, i tell you, vivid experience.
"However, both The Republic of Ireland and The United Kingdom are members of the European Union, even though England in particular likes to pretend that it is an Island in the Mid-Atlantic instead of 50km off the coast of France, but that's a story for another time" Talk about foreshadowing
In about a month, we're not gonna be part of the EU anymore and this video is going to start to become outdated. In 20 years' time, it'll be even more outdated because Scotland will be independent, Northern Ireland will be part of the Rupublic of Ireland and Wales will basically be like a heavy rucksack on England's back. Just wait and see boys Edit: the date's been delayed to January
VoltNoodles speaking as an English man, we never forget you guys, I mean, seriously, there's only four of us it's not difficult, especially if you learnt it from an early age
Planet X Hahahah. Yup, Americans don't even seem to know where the UK is. As for my comment, I was only joking. Our country comes up quite a few times during UK history that is taught in secondary school, so I'd assume post people would know who we were.
1:58 "... although England in particular likes to pretend it is an island in the middle of the Atlantic rather than 50 kms off the coast of France." That aged very well...
"Do British people secretly laugh at those who the terms incorrectly?" Nope, but Scottish people snap the necks of people that confuse their country with England.
@@anotheraltaccofhaywire2ele872 scotts have been selling their own brave men through history to their english lords, even in modern times scotts cant cut ties with the uk despite having enough autonomy and financial power to do so. You can buy Scottish pride !
Scotland really struggle with that one. As stated in the video, they get to vote on English laws, but we don't get to vote on Scottish laws. The Scottish FM loves to blame England for all Scotland's issues though as there is a large portion of Scottish people who actually believe her. Educated Scottish people understand how it works and know it's actually their FM screwing stuff up. For example; England is the only country within the UK where you pay for perscriptions. Scotland chose to subsidise theirs. We had no say in this, but the Scottish FM likes to keep this quiet.
@@MrHowardMoon still would like indeoendance, though, majority of scotland did not vote for brexit but we were still taken out of the EU i dont claim to know alot about polotics but the Scottish Alchahol Economy makes us alot of money and we would be able to sustain ourselves economically, i dont know
