In October of 2014, 29-year old newlywed, Brittany Maynard, became international news when her story went public. She was diagnosed with the most aggressive form of brain cancer-a glioblastoma. Knowing her death would involve relentless pain and suffering, Brittany took control of her own dying process by moving from California to Oregon, which is one of eight states with authorized medical-aid-in-dying. Brittany’s final wish was that people in all 50 states could have this option. She spent the final weeks of her life advocating for this, and her husband, Dan Diaz, continues her fight. Dan works with an organization called, Compassion & Choices, advocating for the expansion of end-of-life options for all terminally ill people. This compelling story may change how you think about both life and death.

I've followed Brittany's story since it came out, & after her passing, Dan's efforts for the death with dignity/"right to die" cause. Theirs is a beautiful, courageous story. I've suffered a rare, incurable disease over 17 years now. I've been mostly bed-ridden & have been on "comfort care only" the past 3 years, because there isn't anything more modern medicine can do for me. I do not have a diagnosis of terminal, but I'm VERY sick, & food (read: EATING) causes horrible pain. My point is, I am a death with dignity supporter loud & proud. I think, in certain circumstances, a person should not have to be diagnosed terminal to be able to make this intimate, personal decision. There are illnesses out there that can have a patient lingering for YEARS in agony, house-bound, with NO quality of life. Living on meager Disability funds. And not all of us have the emotional support of a close-knit, functional family. Pain Management Doctors have told me they often can't control worst pain...40% pain control is considered a success with deep nerve pain. I was surprised to find that most healthy people assume, if they become sick, their pain can/will be eliminated through pain medication. This isn't always so. Unless they dope the person up enough to keep them asleep all the time...which is at least somewhat merciful. 😞 I liken these (my) lingering disease as "being put on a torture rack, but you don't die, & nobody ever let's you off." It's like being buried alive, and the tomb is your bedroom. The fear of losing autonomy, dignity, & becoming stuck in a nasty state-run nursing home is REAL. The reason I'm speaking to my illness in these comments isn't to "hijack" this VERY important story of Brittany. It's to bring attention to the big picture of extreme suffering whether terminal, or not...when doctors advise THERE IS NO CURE. A grown, adult patient should have the right to die peacefully.They shouldn't have to research how to starve to death, or read tips in the book Final Exit on how to die alone, with a bag over the head, in order to stop the suffering. Which is EXACTLY what many, MANY terminal (and chronic) patients are doing, and have done. Dan hit the nail on the head when he said it's about the PATIENT having a CHOICE. NOBODY has to live out their illness but the PATIENT. Having the choice is so important! The patient MUST have the comfort of a choice when they're living with so many uncertainties. Dan also nailed it when he said the patient can have a fear of being tortured to death. In my experience, so many doctors & people who mean well have given their opinions & presented options. But nobody has asked me, the PATIENT, what I want. I'm sorry this is so long, but it's such an important topic. 😞 Dan, the work you're doing is so important. If I were not so sick, I'd be out there fighting for these laws as well. Bless you for all you're doing, & may God bless and keep your beautiful Brittany in His loving arms, always. Keep fighting for patients who are not well enough to do it themselves. We need you. 👊 💞👍

@@MelanieCeman I did realize that too. I am not sure if he has moved on and I am pretty sure he still wears a wedding ring. I feel so bad for her and him too. I saw Beittany's interview and she had two wishes, one was to get married and have children and another one was to become a school teacher. Unfortunately, cancer took both of her dreams away. But when she knew she was going to die, her two wishes were to have the Death with Dignity allowed in all 50 states and have him eventually find a wife that they will love and that he can actually be a father. Clearly she was a selfless person who wanted the best for others. I hope these two things become a reality.

If my husband suffered relentlessly from something like Brittany, and I couldn't help him have Mercy, when he needed Mercy it would kill me inside. Bless you Dan, for respecting your wife's choice, and avocate so others don't have to suffer. It pains me to hear judgement on this topic. This in my eyes, isn't suicide. To those who find suicide shameful, is it shameful to want to die peacefully? Is it a sin to want control over the way you pass when you are told it will end horrifically.. brain cancer is an awful death. You cannot judge negatively unless you have lived it and see your own loved one in pain every single day. I hope Dan has found happiness, whatever happiness means to him. And I hope Brittany's mother and step father are doing well

He was born the same day as my youngest daughter...I was just diagnosed with recurrent cervical cancer, and it's in an area on my uterus that makes it impossible to surgically remove. The surgery usually preformed to "Cure" recurrent gynecological cancers is absolutely barbaric(look up pelvic exenteration) I can have chemo, and if the 2.3 cm tumor shrinks they could potentially keep me on 1 chemo drug for two years and after that it will be watch and wait. I don't want to die, and I also don't want to be forced into a treatment that may not work, and will definitely cause me to be very weak, and sick, and then they are only talking about possibly adding more time....The idea of putting my husband and children through that is the absolute worst.

The only way I can put it is this, I watched my sister suffer from Stage III Esophageal cancer. She tried the chemo, & radiation and it worked for a short time but then she was back to not being able to eat. She lost so much weight that she looked like a holocaust survivor. She wanted to die. We had many talks about it. Simply put she told me this is no quality of life. We live in NY State & that is not a right to die state. I believe she should have had a choice in how & when she would die. We don't let our pets suffer so why do we let people suffer?

He is right. We give our dogs and cats who are who have terminal illnesses more dignified deaths than fellow humans in most states. I'm glad I live in one of the few states have have a Death With Dignity option. Read through the requirements. It is not a quick and easy decision or one that can apply to just anyone. It is a rather narrow list of who this can apply to.

@taramarielive
@taramarielive 4 года назад
Candice, I have wondered the same thing. I, too, am a Christian, and I have always been taught that if you commit suicide, you cannot go to Heaven. That said, Dan pointed out something on the show that was really interesting: people who use Medical-Aid-in-Dying medication are NOT suicidal. They don't WANT to die. They wish they could live, but they are terminally ill and suffering terribly. They are already dying. They simply want to put an end to their unbearable suffering. I watched my grandmother die a horrible death. Her cancer moved into her brain. It was awful. If I were in Brittany Maynard's place, I believe that I would do exactly what she did.

Candice, God is love..this kind of love is called agape...it is an all incompassing kind of love. The God i know as a Christian loves me and would never want to see anyone suffer the fate she knew was coming. There was no other possible outcome. So she chose when she knew she had had enough.

My relationship with my higher power is MINE as is anyone's. It has nothing to do with anyone else. Her relationship with her higher power is between her and hers. Just because I'm on a diet does not mean YOU are not allowed to eat donuts! My diet is not yours to follow. Hi Candice! (Waving). I am a Christian also. I have never read in God's word that suicide equals hell. I have read John 15:12-13 " My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(P) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." It is my opinion that Brittany did exactly that....she laid down HER life for her friends.

Is basically suicide without jumping out of a 20 story building. Where is the faith of God people?. I mean no disrespect. If we would humble ourselves before God and mend our ways (repent) I believe God would hear the prayer of the sincere. And still would answer it according to His will. We might have witnessed a miricle. I believe it in all honesty is a cowardly way to go. Yes it’s frightening yes there is grief . There was even someone like herself fighting the same thing who tried to reach out to her to have some hope. ,but in the end she CHOOSE to go out like that. Self murder is what I see it as truthfully . There is no heroism in that in my opinion. . Very sad... very sad indeed. 😔❤️💯👍🏻
@johnfigueroa6266
@johnfigueroa6266 3 года назад
And her husband “Promised” her that he would advocate the right to choose to murder oneself by legislation in different states??? Anyone with sense would see this as a very bad thing to advocate for. Life is not yours to give it SURE isn’t yours to take. There is no dignity in that. What about all those young people with cancer who choose to have faith through it and was told they were terminal and yet LIVED... never give up... God is always in control. He calls on people to have faith that He will heal them. Man’s necessity is God’s opportunity ... still through out this whole video I never once heard her or any of this family talk about how the would just trust God and leave it in His hands... ❤️❤️💯👍🏻😔

Let me try to put this where some people may understand better, you have a dog 18 years old kidneys failing, eyesight's failing, can't eat can't drink, and what's the first thing you do you take them to the vet.. why because the humane thing to do is to put them to sleep.. so they're not suffering any longer...So okay from now on you are no longer allowed to take your pet to the vet and put them to sleep to take away their pain.... because I don't like it !! I say you cannot do that anymore.... so you can't do it.... I don't care how much the dog is suffering!!!! you're going to have to watch it until it dies...that's all there is to it! Now what would you say to me? it's none of my business, it's not my dog.. you don't want to see your pet that you love so much suffer, right.. that's exactly how I feel about my right to die with dignity ....it's my business, it's my body... I know at the end of my journey that my multiple sclerosis is going to be the reason why I die.... So why am I not allowed to go in peace? so I don't have to suffer? I have a family that loves me, I have a family that cares about me, I have a family that loves me enough to say when I'm tired it's okay for me to go. I watched my mom die of breast cancer in a way she did not want to go and I'll be damned if someone's going to tell me what I can and cannot do with myself. So the decision to die with dignity May not be your decision. But it may or may not be mine or someone else's...you have to talk with God you're the one that has the answer for your actions. So I lovingly say stay out of my rights and I'll stay out of yours. 😸 Oh yeah and another sad side note my birthday is January 1st
