As someone who never experienced Splatoon 1’s meta, it’s interesting how different the metas between 1 and 2 were. I wonder how Splatoon 3’s meta will turn out.
Minor clarification: Some competitive circles in the West actually did start using QRSJ before 2.8 came out in June. I actually came back to Splatoon sometime between patches 2.7 and 2.8 and was told to use QRSJ, for example. But it did take a while before it became meta over here. Back then you had teams that followed Japan's meta closely and those that thought whatever Japan was doing was irrelevant, coincidentally often the people that refused to use meta weapons. Things have changed a lot for the better since then though.
I think Chimera's loss to Always Kids changed a lot of peoples' minds in the West about QR+SJ - but it was definitely present in the West before that. Squids Next Door (particularly Rocket) and Tentacle Difficulties were already consistently running it, namely with Tower Control but also with other modes. I remember an amazing charity stream I believe where Putz and his team faced SND and Putz kept on screaming about how fast Rocket would jump back in lol.
vid isnt up yet, but as an active player of splatoon one, I can say that S+ has become infinitely more copy-paste driven on abilities that pre-splatoon 2. like its actually rare to find anybody without a meta build now for their weapon, and the ones you find that arent running qr, dmg, sub saver or sj are usually not that good lol. kinda miss seeing the dumb shit like gold dynamo w/ recon, ns and sj. I dont think were ever gonna see spl2 in that state just due to how diverse spl2 is compared to the specific weapons that inarguably dominated splatoon 1, such as vshlosher, v-liter, .52 gal and ch3. im actually hoping spl3 edges a bit more into that area, obv not the blatant unbalance with abilities, but really good kits for weapons. if carbon gets burst give vslosher burst, i miss the fun in burst combos and the dumb asf light depletion bubbler on ch3 :(
1:25 lmao funny enough this is actually still present today a bit. But you have to admit that it's not your fault if you are abusing the advantages that the DEVELOPERS literally put in the game. OF COURSE I'M GOING TO USE A OP WEAPON BECAUSE IT'S NOT MY FAULT THAT THEY PUT IT IN THE GAME IN THE FIRST PLACE!
I was dying when he brought that up. Dudes really be putting using Meta weapons/builds on the same tier as hacking. Using thing the devs themselves put in the game (intentionally or not) in order to gain a competitive advantage is fair game. Don't hate the player, hate the game.
The thing I love about this series is that it allows players like myself, who never played Splatoon 1, to see and understand how the original game was designed and how it changed over time.
Entered my first few tournaments in 2016 and early 2017, and these two metas were super demotivating for one of the reasons cited here: gear was just such a hassle. Getting proper builds was rough without having to resort to external methods. I didn't have a functioning desktop at the time, so the only things I could resort to was attempting to attain the gear naturally, or through "save-scumming" with a usb stick. Still super time consuming either way... Really hopeful S3 keeps improving on the gear system. Would really like to get to a point where chance/luck is as small a factor in building gear as possible. (In other words, let me buy chunks XD)
Hey Chara, random thought, but what if in Splatoon 3 they inverted the super jump ability? I'm thinking an ability where it instead makes your teammates have quicker jumps to YOU. Do you think this would be a good change? I know some people who really hate that superjumping willy-nilly out of fights is optimal.
I found the mini rant about splat1's rng system so funny bc most of the people i knew on the splat forums just used save editors, because the data was hosted on the console instead of being connected to any server. I'm really surprised to not hear about this anywhere in the comments, because it was largely how you adjusted for certain comps, especially as currency became more scarce in later patches
I play splatoon 1 everyday and i can confirm u can tell exactly what slots people have based on their gear, no one really memorized them u just see the same gear all the time it sticks to your head
I was really liking Cold Blooded and it's gotten so useless to the point where Splatoon 3 doesn't have it anymore which is a shame. Seeing old clips of Splatoon 1 makes me miss the Kraken even more, it was so much fun terrorising people with it due to how broken it was back in the early days lol
I played splat 1 when I was like 9 or 10. I can’t go back and play online now because I no longer have the online subscription on Wii U, so I decided to look up gameplay for the nostalgia and came across this. this is just hilarious to me because I was too dumb to understand the meta at the time and I just used the kraken roller and used random gear because I was having a good time.
I, for one, do not look back on the QRSJ and Damage Up meta with aaaany sort of fondness. I hated how death was irrelevant and how invincibility specials basically ruled the game. I liked Splatoon 2's meta much more *until they decided we needed Damage Up again.*
Man I do love splatoon too but a lot of the stuff you're saying is going over my head lol I need like back to the basics series and figure out gear and ability chunks and what not
So for the people wandering how people used to understand every kit just by spawning... it's not actually as hard as it looks. Since in S 1 there are so few head, t-shirts and shoes gears and that you would most of the time only see QR, damage up and stealth jump (with some exceptions like ink saver main for dynamo, ink recovery for e-liter and dynamo, defense up for t-teck and .52 gal and .96 gal, ink saver sub for slosher and e-liter to be able to 3 burst bombs, special charge up for splash and one or two subs of special duration up for invincibility specials, swim speed and run speed and come back if you were ready to lose a main of QR) and that damage up and QR appeared as mains on very few gears well you would almost always see the same gears.
I think that your videos are amazing and i think if that the kracken just gave more hp than be invincibility it would be fine and mpu was band in the meta and defence up
Also Ballpoint was the Dynamo of Splatoon 2 every balance patch nerf Dynamo sadge I want Dynamo to paint better/more consistently and no white ink frames!
Echolocater Should 100% Come Back With A Slight Twist, It Will Still Be The Same But If You Use It It Show Where The Enemies Are, But It Will Also Show Enemies Where You Are. (It’s Basically A Pro And Con Special)
I still vastly prefer Splatoon 1 rn to Splatoon 2 rn. I personally play Splatoon to fight and if I'm not fighting I'm not having fun. S+ solo is still as fun as ever when playing at the right time of day and the weapon diversity isn't as bad as people claim, there are very strong players using more uncommon weapons like bamboo, hydra, rapid (myself), sloshing machine etc. A lot more stuff can work with a good amount of skill and a little qr here and there than most people give credit to imo
I replayed Splatoon 1 recently for the seven year anniversary (Holy shit I'm old.) and was surprised to see how fluid it felt despite being limiting compared to Splatoon 2. Maybe it's because of what I played which was Ancho-V and Flounder on Rainmaker and I was not super skilled in 2015-16, so I'm only at the A range but a lot of my own skill built up in 2 as a low Rank X player transferred very well. I will agree however, the first game's meta was completely wack but it's a breath of fresh air and some actual room to breathe when you aren't being kill cucked by Ink Armor, peppered by Tenta Missiles, and harassed by shooters because Nintendo made a second shooter meta in a row where none of my favorite blasters, rollers, and chargers matter! :D I seriously hope Splatoon 3 goes completely balls to the wall with kit balancing, if not full on allowing complete customization to where the creativity is left to the player and not Nintendo to make their own ideal kit, because this kind of shooter game has the potential to be an eSport while having similar levels of dumbness found in other shooters like Team Fortress 2. Given that Nintendo has had three times the actual dev time to make 3 as good as it can be and look back on what they did right and wrong in the past two games, I have confidence that they have something up their sleeve they're eager to reveal soon.
Imagine people looking back at the endgame Splatoon 2 meta fondly after the endgame Splatoon 3 meta became terrible and unbalanced by saying how fun missile spamming was and talk about how they missed the more balanced meta of endgame Splatoon 2.
@@arsenicsauce when you're a reactionary person, you always say that the current state of things is the absolute worst only to look back at it fondly because you overreact to new problems and begin thinking that the past wasn't that bad after the future introduced new problems
I play S1 occasionally, and while there are a few people that still run QR SJ, most people just run damage (oddly enough, I don't see many people run defense aside from ttek players). Vanilla 3k scopes and Custom Range Blasters are probably the most common weapons you'll see in ranked.
I see also a lot of cherry nozzlenoses and grim range blasters. I think these two weapons are basically unstoppable in the right hands and destroy everything.
yeah, in splatoon 1 If Im not using luna blaster, I always use full defense up + ink resistance up gears for rainmaker. basically you just go to the finish line without thinking about the ink if you see the finish already also, there is much lower cost method to search for it rather than using shell for it lol, just buy it again in the shop, but of course it will take time to grind
Ok, Splatoon 1 is a game I can never play again because of one weapon: Carbon Roller Deco. Not because the weapon was good/bad or anything, my internet sucks based on my area and literally ANY use of seeker rush would crash it.
man i always forget to say this but i love the mario party ds background music edit: just finished watching the video... will anyone look back at vjet missile/sting ray spam and think "those were the good ol days"?
I have a feeling that Splatoon 3 will have the worst meta, since they already gave 52 a wall AGAIN, which proves that they haven't learned anything about kits. It will probably dominate every single meta.
If I was the only one who could use damage up I wouldn't be evil I would just increase dynamo's kill hitbox a tiny bit like I would use 3 or 2 subs maximum
What's funny about this is: at the time that Chimera lost at Inkstorm to a midlevel JP team, they were using QR, yes. But they won because they painted more. Chimera was running Luna, Eliter and KrakOn. I remember FLC talking a lot about how the reason Chimera lost was paint but everyone came away saying it was QRSJ.
Personally, I like Defense up. I understand it's not super popular but I like the idea of being able to increase my defensive abilities, and it's just something I find interesting. Obviously it doesn't have to be as powerful as it was in splat1 but I do wish I could get slightly better defense and be able to take a few hits and give myself a bit of time to notice I was getting attacked and although I can understand it being a nightmare to balance so I understand why they cut it
I think turning it into bomb defense is perfect, especially merged with cold blooded. It gives you resistance against subs and specials including location without changing main weapons, that to be is a good balance.
I hope splatoon 3 gives us a mode where we can set our own rules. Imagine reliving the Splatoon 1 meta by playing in that mode and setting respawn to like 2 seconds, lol
bro- last time i was on splatoon was about a year ago. I think I'm lvl 35- I needa catch up pple are probably lvl 99 by now xD (Ive transitioned to splatoon 2)
I think that when you do your Splatoon 3 meta videos you outta mention how insane the pre-release hype for tacticooler was and how much it was ran during the PAX tournament and testfire
Splatoon "Meta" might make you unhappy, but the important part was the game flow, which is superior to what Splatoon 3 has. And Splatoon 2 is left in a broken state that makes it unplayable for most weapon kits...
One thing you forgot about: You were technically able zo save scum in Splatoon 1. Meaning that you could just save your game files onto a usb stick, reroll for 20 or 30 snails and if you didnt get what you wanted you could just revert to your old money/snail state
Splatoon 1 was more chaotic than Splatoon 3 could ever dream of being and I love it. Those invincible specials, Inkstrike being a free Splat Zone takeover, Carbon Roller Deco... *To be young again.*
