When NWA Powerrr first started there was a great buzz around the company. It was the hottest the company had been in years, they had new ownership, investment and a great roster. But fast forward to now and the NWA is far less popular and as someone who has watched every NWA Powerr episode and watches every week, the vibe around the company is just a lot different. This is the story of Billy Corgan’s NWA. Credit to Rhiannon for help with the thumbnail.

The Pandemic stalled momentum. The lost of a lot of young, fresh talent hurt. The move from RU-vid to Fite was brutal. Putting all the eggs in the Nick Aldis basket to lose him was practically a deathblow.

@ravenbeast8639
@ravenbeast8639 Год назад
That happened to AEW as well. They were on TV for around a year and then the pandemic started. But NWA's situation is not really about the talent roster or lack there of. It's their bad decisions that got them here. Really bad choices like Tyrus as the world champ! They still have some really good talent that can carry the company. Tyrus ain't it! Wrestlers like Thom Latimer, Trevor Murdoch, Aron Stevens and Chris Masters to name a few. NWA should've relied on them not a fat old dude who runs out of breath as he walks! Dude wasn't anything special at his prime. Let alone now....

Yeah like, I watched every episode of Powerrr every week just like I watched every episode of Dynamite and Dark at the time, and I was so excited to be able to watch wrestling again without the stain of Saudi blood money. I actually had forgotten it was the pandemic that killed them for me; I was just wondering when I loaded up this video "I remember they stopped making Powerrr, did they do like 'Season 1' and then make us wait for 'Season 2?' Well yes, sort of, in that they shut down rather than empty-arenaing it like the others and as a result I never watched again, sadly. Plus I think they stopped airing on RU-vid at some point? Maybe this video is going to cover that, haha.

Completely misses the real reason for the downfall. David Lagana was the brains behind POWER pre pandemic. He was also the one that was trying to keep things afloat during the beginning of the pandemic. But then he got called out during the Speaking Out movement and resigned, which made Billy the person overseeing everything again. That is when things started to go off the rails/shit the bed. Lagana was the lynch pin that was making it all work. NWA was already in the mud by the time Aldis left.

Yes, wanting to actually make money, how terrible of them. It's funny how fans want the promotion to exist, and entertain them. And want them to be able to afford to bring in more "name stars". Yet scream to the heavens when they can no longer watch it completely for free on YT. They're "big fans", but don't actually want to support the promotion with their own $$$$$. There are 2 things that really hurt them - so much of the roster leaving was a large part of it, I think that hurt more than people realize because hiring another wrestler isn't the same as replacing them. The other issue is when they stopped showing it on youtube - I think a lot of people are like me and when the show left youtube, we stopped watching as we weren't interested in another service or paying to watch it. At that point, you lose a chunk of your audience that will probably never return and then that impacts everything else.

And now they've been dropped and are once again on YT. Except they show pieces of the program instead of the entire show. This kills any continuity. If other wrestling companies, like Memphis, can show their shows start to finish NWA needs to do the same. For that matter if WOW, which is truly awful wrestling, can get a spot on late night on The CW surely the NWA can find someone somewhere to carry their show even if it's on at 3AM. I have to think it's mismanagement

The pandemic really burt them alot as well as losing Dave Lagana who was the guy keeping everything together until he stepped out after being outed in the speaking out movement 2. Hot take, but I don't think losing Aldis was the end for NWA. They were circling the drain before he left, he just knew when it was time to leave the territory. While I'm sure people would take him over Tyrus any day, people were absolutely fed up with Aldis on top because 1.) he had no real challengers besides aging mid carders like Mike Knox and Trevor Murdoch and 2.) he'd been on top since day one and had essentially said and done everything he could've in that position twice over. Some of NWA's poaching could've been avoided if it weren't for an unwillingness to pay out for talent, plus there was that weirdness between Aldis and folks like Zicky Dice (who is an interesting cat who fit the motif, but wasn't a needle mover admittedly) and Marquez who could've been a great source for new up and coming talent through his grassroots UWN territory system. Jocephus was a big loss too I think, but that one can't be helped sadly.

THe thing for me that killed NWA was moving it to Fite and expecting that everybody would pay for it. It was a good product to watch for free with ads on RU-vid, but it wasn't a premium product that I would put down money for every month. That killed all of their momentum. I didn't even find out until a few months ago that they were back airing free episodes on RU-vid, and I've heard nothing about the company, no buzz, no gossip, NOTHING since Aldus left. Now, my main issue is that the name of the company is the National Wrestling ALLIANCE. Where's the Alliance at? It doesn't exist, it's a studio show. If you want this name to mean something again, I think William Corgan needs to start finding some quality wrestling promotions to co-promote the brand and push some new talent up. People still want wrestling in their communities, they want to be able to go to a live show.

I think a big reason why they don't run empower 2 is because that show was booked by Mickie James. She went back to Impact so the driving force behind that shoe is no longer there.

No, the big reason is that the show lost money. And it was a vanity project for Mickie James. Why should NWA waste money on another "all female" event, when they feature female talent pretty heavily on their regular shows? There's no sense losing money. WWE lost money on their all women PPV too.

Biggest mistake was jumping away from RU-vid during the pandemic. He should have found a place to rent and not deleting the entire channel of show on RU-vid and jumping to FITE. I stopped watching wrestling in the late 90s but saw the NWA on RU-vid so I became a faithful NWA fan again. But When they deleted the YT channel content during the pandemic I just stopped watching and even after they came back to RU-vid the magic was gone. Losing Nick Aldis (he was their constant champion like Ric Flair use to be) was a disaster and the lack of real storylines is not good for long term storytelling. But I wish them the best.

Honestly none of this really matters as Corgan has money out the wazoo, it’s his hobby, and it’s not expensive. My biggest issue with NWA since day 1 is the use of retreads nearly in their 50’s instead of tapping into the insane roster of unsigned young talent and building people up. They need a talent scout. Like ROH’s jobber crew and the old Dark/Elevation jobbers have more in ring ability than NWA’s champions. Retreads are fine when that can still go like The Pope, Aldis, even Murdoch and Adonis. But People who weren’t great 15 years ago don’t get better with age.

NWA is caught in a Catch22. You can't make money without stars and you can't make stars without money. I believe 100% in the product Corgan is trying to make, but I think he's going about it wrong. The only purpose Powerrr and USA should fill is as a promotional vehicle to build angles and hype the live events. For the NWA the money is going to be found in arena ticket sales and not in media deals. I also think he needs to sell NWA franchises to serious promoters (the kind that want to make money and not be one of the boys by association) in the old hotbeds of the NWA territories. Atlanta, Charlotte, Tampa, Memphis, Dallas and Kansas City. Do it like the old boys did it. Give the weekly TV to local stations (there are way more now than the glory days because of digital TV) free or at a really low rate and use it to promote arena and spot shows. The promotion doesn't pay for TV time and the stations don't have to pay to produce the program. Win-win for everyone. WWE usually only makes these towns once or twice a year, leaving lovers of live wrestling with only low-grade indy shows locally. The big houses of the 70's and 80's had their seats filled roughly every two weeks because the talent was over organically and the cards were stacked with matches people actually wanted to see. Build it, and they will come. RIP Question Mark

Nobody wants to buy a franchise like you've suggested, because the business in America is in the toilet. Unless you're Vince, forget about it. As for Tony, he's just spending daddy's money hand over fist, still too early to tell. Anyone who already has money made that money from something other than wrestling. They're not going to invest it in a wrestling franchise. Notice how these multimillionaire wrestlers aren't starting their own promotions? They invest in other things. Corgan has no idea how to promote wrestling. He's not good at coming up with names and gimmicks that will reach a huge audience. He relies on nostalgia from the 1980s, which will be lost on anyone born this century. Additionally, some local television types just hate wrestling. Basically, that's the reason why British wrestling was kicked off the air in 1988. Someone at the station just didn't like it. Tell the average person in the street that you're a wrestling fan, see what response you get. Now try walking into a television station, even a local one, ask that wrestling be put on television. Unless you're Vince, they'll laugh you out of the building. Vince has practically monopolised wrestling Stateside as well as in Canada. The best chance a promoter has is to establish a wrestling promotion in a country that isn't already flooded. That rules out Japan, a country with an absurd amount of promotions. Mexico already has a couple of deeply established companies with solid followings. That leaves Great Britain, Australia, parts of Europe, and maybe a few other countries. American is saturated with wrestling and other entertainment options. Investing elsewhere is a much safer option.

In regards to the Empowerrr 2 being postponed........ At the time of NWA74, the other promotions that contributed to the 1st Empowerrr were NOT interested in sharing talent. Mr. Corgan felt that without enough participating partners, the shows roster would not be the caliber of the original event. As you know, Mickie James was a big part of the original event. When Billy elected to wait on running it, Nick says that Billy disrespected Mickie, and then decided to move along when his contract expired. With Nick NOT intending to renew, his attitude changed, and that relationship deteriorated.

There are different philosophies and that makes wrestling more interesting in the large scope of things. However, Billy Corgan has a terrible philosophy that he uses to run NWA. Corgan said in an interview that he wanted his wrestlers and champions to LOOK like people who could beat people up for real. And that's why we had Trevor Murdoch and Tyrus holding the ten pounds of gold for the majority of the last 2 years. That's right, Billy Corgan put the "oldest and most prestigious championship with the richest lineage in all of pro wrestling" on.....the man who is most known for being the Funkasouras midcard jobber in WWE and he is mildly known for playing 2nd fiddle to EC3 and......Matt Hardy.....during TNA's lowest point. Not to mention a lot of people are so consumed by politics in the US that they can't watch an entertainment product with someone in it whose politics they disagree with. And not only does Corgan have the Fox news co host on the NWA show but he's the Word Champion. Tyrus is 50 years old. He's 10 years past the prime he never had and his prime was him dancing with two valets who were more over than him. He can't wrestle, he can't move, he's decent on the mic at best, but hey, he LOOKS like he could beat up people for real. As long as that is Billy Corgan's criteria for his wrestlers and champions, the NWA is going to continue to draw 20 people to their shows until Corgan gets tired of losing money (assuming he ever does) and he let's the dead horse that is the NWA finally rest 40 years after it died.

The most important thing as a wrestling promoter: the *names* of your wrestlers. Don't worry about the wrestlers wrestling, they'll show you that they can wrestle. I mean when you're a promoter, you've got to have *names* for your wrestlers. I've never liked Corgan, and never cared for his group, The Smashing Pumpkins. It was indy poser music for privileged kids who wanted to seem edgy. Awful name for a group, and their albums tended to have awful names, too. Well, that might work for kids who think that the more cryptic the name of something is, the better it must be. Might work in the world of pretentious, mass-marketed pseudo-rebellion, doesn't work in pro wrestling. Wrestlers have names like 'Killer' and "Crusher.' It's really quite simple. You can have the most talented wrestlers available, yet if the *names* don't capture the imagination, that's a problem (and while on on the topics of music and the NWA, the name "Dokken" comes to mind). Corgan didn't realise that. Look at some of those old time wrestlers, they didn't necessarily appear to be the most intimidating people in the world, yet they had names that looked good on a marquee. Corgan is the type of person who would book Tyrus at the expense of, say, Ray 'The Crippler' Stevens (just imagining that the two are from the same era). The name "Tyrus" says nothing to me. Doesn't matter what he may look like, because if I'm flicking through a wrestling magazine or walking past a marquee, and I see that name, it says nothing to me. The name of the company is another liability. As you said, the NWA finished 40 years ago. People these days associate the letters "NWA" with a certain rap group, not a wrestling company. It just causes confusion and chuckles. The fans who *are* familiar with the old NWA know better, they know the group of promoters that formed the NWA hasn't existed in decades. Turner bought out Crockett, and like it or not, the lineage of the NWA was absorbed into WCW. A good promoter would start something new and go in a different direction. Recording in front of a minuscule television audience is another problem. It looks strictly small-time. It's even worse when Corgan shows his Powder-looking face on camera. People are like, "Corgan's a millionaire, right? So, why the low budget production?" They surmise that Corgan is just half-arsing it, they're not interested, and they go back to watching Celebrity Strip Poker or whatever it is. Doesn't matter if Corgan's leftover fans from the '90s don't like it, these are facts. You need to have wrestlers with catchy names, names that grab the imagination, and a product that looks like it cares about itself.

I stuck with NWA as long as I could when they came back from their hiatus due to the pandemic but I could only take so much. First, they put the TV title on Tyrus when they should've had Pope reach the Lucky 7 to challenge Aldis for NWA Championship, and then Tyrus eventually becomes NWA Champion. Then there was the social distance match, which was beyond embarrassing. Also, you have Aron Stevens doing the most cringe segments ever. He's someone who thinks he knows what he's doing but as his run in Impact showed and now NWA, he needs someone to reign in his ideas and tell him when something is bleh. But what finally did it for me with the NWA was Gaggz the Gymp. As soon as I saw that, I said "phuck it" and stopped watching their program. Let this sink in - they went from Nick Aldis, Eli Drake (LA Knight), James Storm, and Ricky Starks to Tyrus, a Gymp, and Mike Knox.

Jim Cornette getting fired for making a joke that would of been lame 20 years ago was the start of the downfall Plus COVID and AEW stealing alot of their talent didn't help 🤨

I loved the first two seasons of NWA Power! The storylines were nice and I really liked the retro studio feel of the program, but then they took Power off youtube and instead made the show a weekly ppv on Fite TV in addition to the yearly big ppv events, and i just couldn't follow. So after a while it just slipped my mind. If it hadn't been for this video i would've completely forgotten that Power was even still around.

Pre-COVID NWA was amazing. Aron Stevens and The Question Mark used to make my weeks. Now look at the state of the company. Tyrus? 😂😂 Talk about going from pure class to pure ass.

Aaron Stevens and The Question Mark were really a high point with their quite simple comedy shtick. RIP Josephus

Taking the title off Cardona was a huge mistake as well, Trevor Murdoch was a boring champion. He's still better than Tyrus, but not much

Josephus was a great character a main event star in the making and they made him a comedy act granted it did get over and it turned out great but the Josephus character deserved better

@@JM-fr5ge You may be right, but I'm willing to bet Josephus was having the time of his life doing those bits with Aron.

The way Lagana handled the Cornette comment was the start of the downfall. Covid crippled the roster, as i was watching every week before it. Now with Aldis gone they have no credibility. Cornette made it feel like the old NWA an d Aldis was the new NWA. Without those those two, it would have never even gotten to it's original success.

The NWA ain’t bad,I agree with the end of the video.the women’s division is stacked,! Kamille is a great champion and Kenzie Paige is my current favorite wrestler and her little sister Kylie who is a very talented young lady recently joined her.Plus Natalia Marakova and others are solid.The problem I see is inconsistent booking and having a washed up never was like Tyrus carrying the heavyweight title.That is embarrassing.Plus they could shore up their jr heavyweight division with so many good smaller guys on the indies who could use exposure.But I like the NWA and want to see them succeed.

Completely left out the David Lagana departure, which massively altered their creative and production status. That being said, *Tyrus represents the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship* ? You had James Storm and didn't put the belt on him?!? Congrats, you're making TNA Hogan decisions.

As a Smashing Pumpkins fan: Never doubt Billy Corgan's ability to alienate those closest to him.
