There was a huge amount of religious upheaval during the Tudor Period, and to question religion at this time was very dangerous. Many people who dared to do so were deemed to be heretics and were then executed in different sadistic ways. During the reign of Bloody Mary I for example hundreds of people across the Kingdom were burned at the stake in brutal scenes in front of huge crowds. But one influential member of the church who’s served in a number of different positions during various Tudor monarchs was Stephen Gardiner, the Bishop of Winchester. He has been remembered today as a prominent Catholic Bishop who’s actions resulted in the torture and execution of dozens of people across the land.
