In 1985, i was sent to Korea. I did not want to go. When i got there, i was enchanted. I was assigned to camp Casey in 2 ID. I fell in love with korea and all the beauty and history I saw. 9 months into my service there, learning all i could about history, tradition, language. I fell in love with the people. Then i met a magnificent korean lady. Two weeks later we were getting married. I stayed until 1990... i did not want to leave... everything had changed. We just celebrated our 36th anniversary. My love for korea and the korean people has never diminished. May God continue to guide and protect her.

My father was a US Marine in WW2. He made four landings in the Central Pacific. When Korea started some of his WW2 buddies came by to visit and tried to get him to reenlist with them. He declined their offer. They kept in touch by US mail until his best friend finally stopped writing. My father assumed he was killed in Korea as he never heard from him again. My mother's brother was in the US Army in Korea, in supply, so he never saw any combat. My father's sister's husband wasn't so lucky. He was in the 1st Marine Div and was wounded in Korea. He was awarded a Silver Star and of course a Purple Heart. Of course this was yet another avoidable war as a result of bad foreign policy.

As soon as the machine guns would open up they would draw all the enemy fire in an attempt to silence them so you had to protect the machine guns until just the right time to use them to your greatest advantage and the bad guys detriment (an old U.S. Recon Marine vet. who spent 26 months in Vietnam from Oct. I remember meeting an older gentleman who was the janitor of a grocery store. Being friendly I said something about it being cold. He just snickered and said, "This cold is nothing." After I inquired about what he ment. He told me he was in a squad that got cut off and left behind during the retreat in North Korean. And that he was the only one in his squad to make it back alive after a hand to hand combat with a squad of Chinese they ran into at night. He said his hands almost froze solid due to being covered with blood and the extreme cold and that he was sent home after making it back to American lines. He suffered minor frost bite and other wounds that made him unable to return to the front. "After that, I realized I would never ever be cold again", he said. I shook his hand and said, "In case no one has ever said it, Thank you for all you did and your Service." We became friends on that day....

Correction: The Pershing's frontal hull armor was not 76mm thick. It was 102mm thick and sloped so that it came out to an effective thickness of 152mm. I believe you confused the T26 family of tanks, which the M26 was developed from, with the T25 family of tank designs that the US Army passed over to pursue development of the T26 family. Because the T25 had 76mm frontal armor but every single proposed version of the T26 family had 102mm or thicker frontal armor sloped at 46-48 degrees from vertical for 150-152mm of frontal hull protection.

Yeah the figures are quite wrong. Also the T-34/85 certainly got more than 45mm of sloped armor which are rather figures of early T-34s. It actually got armor up to 90mm which certainly was a problem for M24 and even for the Sherman 76mm HV.

@Victoria VilnaAlthough seemingly peaceful on the outside, in reality we are still fighting an ideological war inside South Korea. There are still forces in South Korea who are trying to take the initiative by assimilating with communism like in the 50s. During the 6.25 Korean War, there were forces that tried to establish their own power by communizing the Korean Peninsula by borrowing the power of military aid from the Soviet Union. This is the current North Korean communist regime. Also, even today, there are such forces in South Korea, and it is true that these forces do not stop such attempts by borrowing the power of the Chinese Communist Party. The CCP is also projecting their influence inside South Korea to try to bring it under their influence. Most Koreans know and remember well what the US did to us after liberation from Japanese colonial rule. The United States has passed on technology to us, generously aided and, above all, shed their noble blood to defend freedom. I expect Americans to understand our situation. It is true that in our South Korean society, there are people who deceive people for their own achievement and are also brainwashed by them.

It's kinda sad once you know the truths. Look at the 20 years in Afghanistan. Politicians meddle with other countries affair by sending young men to their early deaths. Found this interesting article on the Korean Civil War and now I'm sharing with yall. Approximately 150,000 troops from South Korea, the United States, and participating U.N. nations were killed in the Korean War, and as many as one million South Korean civilians perished. An estimated 800,000 communist soldiers were killed, and more than 200,000 North Korean civilians died. If U.S. had stayed out of the Korean war, Korea would be one. Was it worth it for U.S to lose all those lives? What did Americans gain? How does this question looks like now? You know, Korea was about to BE ONE before US stepped in. So one can also argue that it is the U.S who cause the death of thousands of Koreans. You may then argue: But South Koreans live much better lives than their counterparts in the north, so life would have been better if South Korea had won the war! Well, I am sorry to show you this GDP graph: The North Koreans had been always richer than their southern neighbors until the 1970s(The North has much less population but similar GDP). You may then ask: But the north was ruled by dictator! But if you do some research, you will surprisingly find that the South WAS too. Wars are never about good or evil, they are always rooted to national interests. People just painted their enemy into evil to justify their own actions. So what was the root cause of Korean War ? Division of the world by USSR and The U.S. They divided Korea into two for their own interests, also happened in Germany, Vietnam and so on. Just like what the British Empire did in India and Pakistan. Which almost guarantees wars between those two parts. So why would someone ask questions like this? Westerners were bombarded by negative informations from their “free” medias about China for decades. When they think about China, they firstly tell themselves China is bad, and then see China through this coloured lense so that they can never get a neutral view of China. --Mark Brown University’s Costs of War Project this month released a new estimate of the total death toll from the U.S. wars in three countries: Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. The numbers, while conservatively estimated, are staggering. Brown’s researchers estimate that at least 480,000 people have been directly killed by violence over the course of these conflicts, more than 244,000 of them civilians. In addition to those killed by direct acts violence, the number of indirect deaths - those resulting from disease, displacement, and the loss of critical infrastructure - is believed to be several times higher, running into the millions. --Brown University’s The war in Afghan was never about 'counterterrorism'...it was all about business and using afghan as a cover for money laundering and enriching the huge military contractors and politicians, as well as proxy to destabilize the region to contain the likes of Iran, China, Russia etc. -Jeff L I'm still having trouble fathoming how a country (Afghanistan) with trillions of U.S. dollars in unextracted mineral, gem, and metal deposits is somehow still a "undeveloped" and poor country. -Joel Davis The US has oppression, exploitation of foreign countries and brainwashing of its own population down to an art. -chamade166

Respect to all the brave men who fought in this brutal war whether they are Chinese Korean or American. Both side fought valiantly for their causes. Nobody knew at the time which ideology is superior. The North Korean never knew how NK would end up in a Kim's dynasty. South Korean never knew they would eventually become what they are today as SK was a dictatorship all the way till the 80s and its economy at the time was way behind NK. All UN soldiers fought bravely for their allies, coming from all parts of the world but gathered in Korea for a common cause. The Chinese fought ferociously with determination. Those teenage boys survived the childhood living in the horror of Japanese invasion, fought through the brutal five years of Chinese civil war, yet with almost no artillery, armour supports and an empty stomach, they would still charge into the UN fire fearlessly with their bolt actioned rifle and summer clothing in the -40 degree Celsius Winter of Korea. That is unimaginable what those men have been through. Rest in peace to all those men who died in the war regardless of ideology, in the end under the blue or red banner, we are all human. Let politicians hate each other whatever they wanted to, but the true bravery of a man is to find love in the time of hatred.

Yeah, that’s stupid. Oh yeah they were sooo great and about as noble as the Japanese had been. The Chinese and the North Korea dictatorship sucks, the people are just prisoners in that but they were never some noble effort or right in anyway. You’re defending them because you’re Chinese or like them and so want to see your people as not being evil then. But don’t worry, everyone defends Americas enemies while attacking America so you will get a lot of backing. People were annoyed America bombed Japan despite japan starting the war after we tried to make peace, then Massacring Asia, then torturing and killing our pows but people are like ‘hey, only what you did is an issue America. In every situation that’s true okay.’ China has been massacring its own people like North Korea has for a long time and has always had some of that mentality, so please make sure to defend them and they’re oh so noble efforts. The people were the ones who supported the communist dictatorship that killed so many of them during the many revolutions, the democratic leadership there also killed many but still less than the communist party. Don’t know if they could look right next to them at how well communism has worked for Russians but many of them starved or were sent to Gulags so not well.
@ComeAlongKay

So annoying is China. We do so much work to rescue China from the Japanese and boom China goes commie, does the standard commie thing of killing it’s own people in large quantities, and now they’re like one of our biggest enemies. It’s like how good the Soviet Union fell and boom another communist power god dang it. We need to stop liberating places, from the nazis, the Japanese, the Chinese and North Koreans. We get zero credit and a lot of hate and barely any support.

Here in the UK I worked with a Guy who was in Korea. He said his first encounter was with Chinese troops. He said that most of them didn’t have any guns or Ammo. But! he said that they were not prepared for the Chinese.Most of the Chinese had only had Pots and pans, which they used to beat. He said that it was the most frightening noise he had ever heard. At the time we had Vickers machine guns,that were water cooled. He said that the Machine guns opened up,and the Chinese were coming in waves, some of the guns were getting so hot they were beginning to jam up. The Chinese were being cut to pieces,but they still kept coming. They were walking over the dead bodies of their comrades. He said that it still haunted him after all those years. This was in the early 70s that we were discussing this. There were Centurion tanks at a crossroads. The Chinese were trying to jump on the tanks to put satchel charges on the Centurions. But the Tank Gunners were shooting the Chinese of of each others tank. War is Madness perpetrated by People who aren’t even there. So it’s not all about the Americans winning WW1I And dominating Korea! We Brits were there, as well as other countries. Read about the “Glorious Gloucesters” Sergeant Bill Speakman.

For 2,000 years thousands of hands have been all over it, adding this part and that part and just removing stuff they didn't like (like the book of Enoch, for one thing). Ever hear a rumor after it's been told to 2 or 3 people? At some point it'll lose the original details, become exaggerated with a lot of things added that were never part of the story. I was a tank commander in 1983-1986 in the East German army (a t-55) and therefore understand a bit about tank war fare. During my university time right afterwards I had a co-student from North Korea helping us specially with high math and experimental physics. He was an extremely bright and well educated young man and proud of his country. I still owe him to make through the first two years in the university. Later I worked in South Korea, travelling in and out of the country, during the later 1990s and early 2000s years. Korea and its people is indeed a beautiful country with nice people. The tragic about Korea as a whole nation is that they got divided (in the opposite to Germany) by invasions of external powers only. Korea as a nation never attacked any other country throughout the long pre-WW2 history, the Asian chapter of WW2 and then this horrific and very brutal Korean war - in which both sides and their allies committed many unbelievable acts of brutality not only against "enemy" soldiers but also against the totally innocent civilian population. The Korean war was avoidable, even Stalin was not in favour of it for various reasons. But this war is one of the many sad samples how idiotic political leaders start wars, abusing the bravery of young men to serve their countries and causing unbelievable hardship to people who only want to go on with their ordinary lives. For Korea, North and South, I hope that they will one day reunite on their peninsula peacefully and that they can abolish both of their armies and perhaps go for neutrality. I wish for a then reunited Korea all the best she finally and absolutely deserves, as we here had this historical lucky moment in Germany to be reunited (with all its difficulties) peacefully already. For the rest of the world: let's put our tanks (and all other military equipment) finally into museums (as a warning) and into scrap yards, have the now open and hidden conflicts resolved or put aside by diplomatic means only and come back to disarmament and cooperation and respect across the globe. It is so tiring to see how the world, including the "West", right now runs back into senseless and stupid confrontational behaviour, which will lead us into disaster for sure. Both my grandfather were fighting in the German Wehrmacht during WW2 and fortunately both returned, although mentally scarred. Their message was very clear and they kept repeating it time and time again: "Never again!". Peace! from Dresden / Germany

@@ORYG1N That's true and a good point, but the earlier Sherman variants were also going up against earlier Mk3's and 4's, which it was on par with. Awesome video!! I spent a year in Korea, 1992-1993, with A Co, 2nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Castle, which was roughly 1 mile north of Tong Du Chon and about 12 miles or so south of the DMZ. Mission was to survive long enough to make to defensive positions along the Imjin River; create defensive obstacles; and die in place until re-inforcements arrived. Our B Co was tasked with the destruction of Freedom Bridge; then die in place. Had the opportunity to take a tour up to Panmunjong and see the security forces; se the border; and actually walk roughly 12' into North Korea - there was a building on the border sat on the border that literally had a white line painted through it depicting the border and a conference table inside with the border painted onto as well. We were allowed the around that table 9under the eyes of North & South Korean Security personnel) and thus able to "claim" that we were in North Korea. Also got to see PROPOGANDA VILLAGE and the Bridge of No Return.

PROPAGANDA VILLAGE wasn't its proper name, that was the name given by the American propaganda machine

"Mission was to survive long enough to make to defensive positions along the Imjin River; create defensive obstacles; and die in place until re-inforcements arrived. Our B Co was tasked with the destruction of Freedom Bridge; then die in place" Your use of extreme hyperbole here is noticed by any veteran and anyone with any sense of history. 1990s heavy combat in Korea huh? smh... Just be proud of your service, no need to BS people

This has been on youtube for a long time. Looks like they just rebranded it and put it up again.

This WAR does not get as much notice as it should. After WW2, Truman and Congress bring our nation back to nearly pre-war levels of military strength. We have almost completely demilitarized the US armed forces and because of the Korean War, the USA takes the position of Peace through Strength. What would have happened to the world and Europe if we continued our post-war force reductions. These veterans of the Korean War deserve some of the greatest respect.
