the point of a survival whistle is, 1) it can be heard much further than your voice, yelling and 2) it does not cause strain on your vocal cords, so you can use it much longer than you can effectively holler. the internationally recognized alarm for someone in need is to blow three short whistles, in 3 seconds, pause for 5 seconds, and repeat as long as required. search and rescue will respond with 1 whistle, to tell you they are near, this does not meant stop, they will use your whistles to locate you. everyone should have a whistle on them at all times. sometime, as a test, try putting yourself in a position that make4s it hard to breath deep. have someone be 100 feet away, and try hollering "help" , then blow the whistle three times, and see which one they can hear better. I also feel that everyone should carry a fixed blade knife any time they are going into the woods. they have a lot more capability than even a really tough folder if you find yourself in an unintentional over night camping situation. a 4-6" blade, full tang knife is a critical piece of emergency gear.
I own this knife, I've carried it a couple of times on hiking trips. It's a good sharp knife. 420HC steel is fairly tough and holds an edge for a minute. Like the blade shape and the handle is comfortable. Good review video. Thanks
Bro, thanks for commenting and for watching at all. I'm new to this so I want all the input I can get. Tell me about your EDC and what you carry. Are you new to the hobby?
I'm not new to the hobby. If that's what you want to call it, it's more like a mild obsession. I've been collecting for about 50 years, and I don't have a bunch of money to throw at it, so most of my collection is in the sub hundred dollar range. I've been down sizing what I have, giving it to my kids. Today, I'm carrying my Manix 2XL in CRUWEAR and my Paramilitary 2 in S45VN. There's not much room left in the pocket for the rest of my EDC stuff. I liked your video, I've been drooling over the Padre for a year, a sweet knife, and a great blade steel. Have a great day, and thanks for the content.
Love my Selkirk. Yes…I batoned some 3-4” diameter white birch with it. All I had to do was tighten one screw in the grip later. It takes a great edge and holds it pretty well. One of my “not trading it away” blades.
That is awesome sir, I really want to try mine with some bush crafting but I have some health and mobility issues but I'll get there. Thanks for watching and commenting, please consider subscribing!
@@cincinnatus007 and before anyone gives me flak, not saying you will or did, I typically DON’T baton with my knives. But this one said “try me” and I did out of curiosity. I wanted to Womp on it a bit before carrying it all the time. Especially being a Scoutmaster and knowing what my Scouts could possibly wreak upon it. Several of them got the mini version after I demonstrated it to them. I can achieve 10-12 curl shavings with it on birch branches. They can too now.
Thanks for the video on this knife, there aren’t many on RU-vid. I have one and it’s great. The design is fantastic. I wish Buck would make one in house in Idaho and keep the Chinese one as an export model so it’s more affordable for the world market.
Fantastic review! Great knives. I've taken the belt clip apart to re-adjust it and it was almost like a Japanese puzzle to get it back together. Be sure to take lots of pictures before you take it apart.
Very nice video. I would recommend trying the BPS adventurer and the two other knives i use are coldsteel SRK-C the 3v version is around $89 at midway. The last knife is coldsteel mini pendleton hunter. I use the aus10 version it is the best bird and trout knife ive ever found. The BPS adventurer is amazing the steel is 1066 which is German spring steel comparable to 5160. Sharpest knife ive ever bought. That list is the knives i use the most -my mora Garberg (because you commented you weren't a mora fan) That folder was very nice i really like that. I generally carry a tri-ad lock knife. I love lockbacks. Hope you have a chance to try anyone of them you won't be disappointed. The SRK-C is like $35 for the sk5 version so they all are budget knives. Under $45.
Just found your channel, & thank you for reviewing the Selkirk fixed blade. My hands are also larger, and from the way it fit in your hand, I just don't think I'd like the length of the handle. (A handle that's too small on an otherwise nice knife, especially on fixed blade knives, is one of my pet peeves, because there's nothing you can do about it.) Seeing your video helps me put to rest the urge to buy this knife once & for all -- thanks for saving me some money! Great to find this channel!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and sharing your perspective. Are you sure you won't give it a try? I think it still has comfy ergonomics.
Hello friend, that knife is the Kunwu Pulsar and it's a very well made knife and Elmax no less! Thanks for commenting. Go check out Kunwu , obviously a Chinese manufacturer so don't be surprised but great knives at a good price for what you get. Let me know what you wanna see on the channel!
Gorgeous knife. I like that injection molded sheath. Very cool knife brother. That's an amazing survival knife. The small one is for carrying on paracord
I believe you can adjust the belt loop to the top notch and it would allow a wider belt to slide below the notch as is wider than the bottom notch allows just slide the belt below the top notch
I have been looking at the large Selkirk for years. I like Buck Knives, I like the blade shape and the sheath but I can’t get over the made in China part.
The little post, in the belt loop can be removed, for very wide belts, or moved to another hole, for narrower belts. Also, for narrower belts, it can be used to adjust how high or low the knife sits on the belt, by putting it above or below the belt. 😁✌🖖
I think you could explain the steel used on the new buck Selkirk a little more detailed ie, edge retention, ease of sharpening, other steels offered, etc. Great video though and I'm going to investigate that one myself as it looks great. The.fire stick safety.lock pretty cool normally they just slide in. Take a look at Eafengro budget knives. Sharp as he k out of the box but a devil to sharpening. You might like those
yeah man go check it out.. Esee is a great compnay.. they have full warranty on there knives// break it they replace it. The only diffrence is the butt end on the buck is more hammer type. but the blade looks like it. I,m a ESEE guy tho. Esee warranty transfer also. Say you find one laying around , take it a break it.. they will replace it for free... @@cincinnatus007
I have the small folding Selkirk. Not my favorite buck. I do have a few bucks. Id have to say my favorite is the buck 192 Alaskan guide. It feels perfect in the hand. Second favorite would be the buck 113. After that the buck 110, then the buck 346. There are more but i don't carry them often, oh except the made in the U.S.A. stockman i have. I'll throw it in my pocket when i don't want to have one on my belt.
I have the Selkirk and love it…. I also have several other Buck’s…. Both fixed blade and folders. Buck and Gerber have both been great knife makers for us who can’t afford $200 ( or more) knives. I do have a couple of knives that are $100+ but don’t use them near as much as my Buck’s…..
@@cincinnatus007 I like larger flipper knives and fixed blades in the 4.5 inch range. I have several EDC knives that i rotate. I am currently carrying a Kubey Nova and i love it. Gotta have one of those Bucks you reviewed on the video, very nice!
@jakewade7388 hey man, large flipper are my jam and that is what my content is going to center around but, the response to this video has me reconsidering. Thank you for commenting!
I had to remove the center hardware and grind off about a millimeter of it so when you tighten it it doesn't bottom out and leave the scale loose now my scales don't move
Casio Men's PAG240T-7CR Pathfinder Triple-Sensor Stainless Steel Watch with Titanium Bracelet. Whew! Thanks man and thank you for commenting. This video is so popular, I'm considering sticking to Buck products only! 😂😂
@@cincinnatus007 u might be onto something! I just sent back a prw 3500 cuz the damn alarm wouldn’t work. It was my shtf watch and now I don’t have one. That’s why I was fixated on yours lol.
I've seen Buck Knives with all kinds of steel including the more premium one's but they can be kind of costly and this channel is presently focused on budget range EDC. Thanks for the comment.
Hell yeah they do! Brother, thanks for commenting and putting that info out, I wasn't sure of exactly how many Selkirk models there were. I'm ready to try one of the folders, how bout you. @theknifebeater added an after market clip to his so I might try that myself. Please sub and comment back bro! 👍
And.. the small notch at the base of the blade was made for the ferro rod. Watch the video done by the designer.. dont have to take my word on it... 😅 Works well
It's because of the uneven heat-treat, when you use the top spine it damages the steel. I had to flatten the edges out again. Love the design, but china had poor heat-treat for blades at the time, a company called RealSteel is doing better heat treats. This is a budget Chinese manufacturer, finally making decent steel.
@cincinnatus007 i do not. I have several bucks tho, 119, 110 and 102. Another called alpha scout or something like that. Its nice but over priced for what it is. But yours is just right imo for size, practical use.
@joeymatthews448 bro, all I'm gonna show is my results when I get it switched over. Trust me, you don't wanna see me trying to problem solve on video, we'd be there forever. 😂
Buck does harden their steel to stay above 58rc , All the steel snobs would avoid buck but they'll never use the overpriced "super steel " they worship.
Man thanks for subbing. I don't understand the folks that come here not to contribute at all and only make a negative comment on a topic of which we have very little control.@@TheCwright1976
