Nothing "entry level" about this knife. It's capable, it's beautiful, it's sharp as a razor out of the box, and it's backed by an awesome warranty. I was very impressed when I got mine, especially for the price.

The phones and computers being used to type the negative comments about "made in China" are most likey made in China I'm guessing. If it's a Samsung or iPhone, I'm sure you could argue that it's of good quality, right? As a collector I own dozens of Buck Knives including this one. I can tell you it's of high quality, has an excellent fit and finish and holds an edge as well as my 110 made in Idaho. That, and it's affordable! This knife is also backed by the Buck "Forever Warranty". Roughly 20% of Buck models are imported. Buck does not have the tooling to crank out the kind of production with a price point that keeps the company competitive in the marketplace. Staying competitive in the marketplace allows them to produce around 80% of their products in the US. Like it or not that's the reality in the modern global marketplace. I for one love the Selkirk...and this video. Nice job!

It takes a REALLY fucking stupid person to think that quality cannot come from something not made stateside. They also likely vote straight republican and own a MAGA hat...made in china. It's ignorance plain and simple. National GDP pride is about as intelligent of a concept as an ashtray on a motorcycle

I've had my Selkirk for about a year no. I'll tell ya I put this knife through the ringer and no complaint other than the ferro rod is lacking. I grew up with Buck knives and lately they are stepping out of the shadows in the knife world.

In all honesty, it is a quite good looking and pretty functional knife for the price from what you've shown. The sheath is also a strong point. However, I personally just can't reward American companies for sending manufacturing to China anymore. I know, I know, good luck finding anything that isn't made overseas and if all things were made here the prices would be double, I get it. I for one, can no longer do it. So when and where I can, I buy American. With that said, I'm very grateful for you showing other options with lower price points on the channel. So please don't stop doing that when you can, even if it is made in the PRC.

The whistle sound like an Oscar Mayer Weenie Whistle. I bought the knife and really like it, the whistle I think is mostly a gimmick. I carry a DI Srgt style whistle in my field jacket and a user specific ferro rod with striker, but nice to have a backup.

If you're looking for a small, useful, inexpensive, made in the USA, Buck knife, check out the Bucklite Max small knife (673). You can pick them up for around 30 dollars. In fact, Buck has a whole range of USA made knives for under 50, including the venerable Buck 110.

Just got the small version only issue was not that sharp out box and the handle size is a bit small making heavy cutting tasks a bit uncomfortable even for my small hands. I'd get the larger version next time.

Good job and I think your take is accurate. Mine has suffered some slight edge roll after light/med work but nothing serious. I do like the shape and style but wish the tip was a bit more stout... seems kinda thin and I hesitate to use it hard. I thought I heard somewhere that the pommel and guard were welded on, I could be wrong. It's a good piece of kit for the money no doubt. Thanks.
@jobyEN
@jobyEN 9 лет назад
+cyclist01222 Definitely welded! You can see it if you're watching the front side of the pommel (from the blade perspective).

Not sure if someone said this yet I recently bought this knife. I can tell you very tough but the pommel is welded on not one full cut. This does not change my opinion on the knife quality is defenetly there.

China, 10,000 years of knife making combined with state of the art CNC and every country on earth sending PHD level machinists etc to produce top quality knives these days. Spend $200 on a chinese-made knife and spend the same $200 on a usa-made knife and then compare the difference then you see what I'm talkin about. People say they won't touch chinese-made stuff sitting with Chinese made $1,500 iPhone or Mac computer made in China. $25 you get real quality D2 with G10 handles

Made in China ? , Well not everyone can afford knives in the $100 to over $200 range. I do not baton , I only use knives for cutting . This knife for that would be fine and most camp chores , also it would make a excellent EDC knife . I prefer U.S. knives too and I own a Lt Wright next Gen and LT Wright patriot , though I have a limited budget and any decent knife from overseas is Ok with me , even if from China if Built good . Because those of us on low incomes it is all we can afford. The Selkirk looks good , and for most people who will use a knife for camping and hiking this will do fine. Survival is very rare , even so this knife would work just fine if you needed to survive . Survivorman never uses expensive knives and does fine in his survival skills and actual survival using only Spanish or Chinese Camillus knives and they work. Also these super steels raise knife prices to crazy levels , They also are very hard to sharpen in the field with only Diamond sharpeners or stones . It is all marketing hype for CPM 3v , S30V, and others , wait until you have to sharpen them then you will know. One excellent steel that I like is AEBL stainless steel , easy to sharpen and holds a great edge on my Scandi LT Wright Patriot knife.

3 better knives: 1.) Old hickory 7" butcher @ $10. 2.) Schrade SCHF37 @ $30. 3.) Condor bushlore @ $36. I'm sure there are more then 3 that are both less expensive and have better steel then this offering by buck, but I can't think of any at the moment. What are your 3 entry level survival knife options?

Thanks for this first look at the model 863, Adam. This coming from Buck reminds me of the Gerber Strongarm, which IS made in the USA. About the same price. Some similar sheath features. I'd like to see a comparison of these two.
@CommonCentsOutdoorsman
@CommonCentsOutdoorsman 9 лет назад

For an entry level bushcraftsman knife it is okay, but the blade is too short for the average user when out in the forest. I would love to see them come out with a knife with a longer blade and handle in the future.

i don't know, if your looking for a great survival knife under $60 bucks i don't think that's it. blade magazines 2015 peoples choice blade of the year was the schrade schf36, and it's almost $24 less. in my opinion anything from the schf9 on up would be a considerable improvement regardless of the metric chosen to compare. having said that, i'm going to try and win the selkirk during the give-away.

I agree with you, sad thing is, even the US made knives sometimes use chinese steel, or use US steel and design and manufacturer in China....or any combination thereof. If I see US on a knife, I want the design, manufacture, and components to be here. (not that I don't have any chinese knives, I do, and some really good ones)

The sad state of things is that our countries leaders whom we elect have made it impossible for companies to survive in certain markets. 90% of the common folk weekend warriors,hikers,campers and hunters don't really care if its made in China or Taiwan exc exc. What they want is a workable nice knife that doesn't cut into paying their bills. This for me is why I've went with Schrade for my last two knives because buying a knife made in the USA is going to cost 80$ on up. Knocking Buck for using China isnt really their fault its ours and the leaders we vote for or in many cases those who dont vote yet freak out about China making products. You wanta see more American made products vote for presidents and Congress members who will stop taxing our own people out of their own country.

I think the baton-ing was unreasonable. Baton-ing is not needed on such a log of this size and even if it were a different technique should have been used like fracturing. Baton-ing is overrated and outdated. If its bigger than my wrist, I won't button with a knife. I own this knife; ITS NOT MY FAVORITE KNIFE. This wasn't a fair evaluation by executing a task not reasonable or even needed. Why do people place such a high value on beating the crap out of a knife to see if its is a worthy blade to take in the field? Also, "If your not always prepared, you are never prepared".... try bringing a tomahawk or hatchet in your kit to avoid having to baton with such a small blade. Indexing? You mean a good way to slice your fingers right? Sorry, but I question these techniques. You can index smaller knives in the way you showed but a blade that long.... your gonna bleed. The knife is what it is and with its inherent limitations it will not perform like a hatchet or scalpel. "Right tool for the job" is not just a cleche'.
