Originally opening as The Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane in 1880 with a patient capacity of 600, in the early 1900s the facility was renamed The Buffalo State Hospital. It would continue to treat and house patients until 1976, for a total of 94 years, after which time it would still house the facility’s administrative offices for several years, and then serve as storage. At its peak in the 1950s, the facility would end up housing 2,766 patients in a space still meant for no more than 600. The historic facility was granted a new lease on life in the 2000s as one-third of it was restored, remodeled, and reopened as one of Buffalo’s premier luxury hotels and conference centers, with increasing portions of its structures and grounds serving as a center for the local community in varying capacities. Further plans are also being actively pursued to restore, remodel, and repurpose the remaining two-thirds of the old historic facility, as well. This is its story.
This video has been produced by the mentally ill, for the mentally ill, and for all others that might have any type of interest within them. It is strictly a not-for-profit production. Thank you for both watching and sharing it.

It really is a beautiful place. When I took a tour here, I was astounded by the sheer space. It felt so open and with the light shining through, it seemed like such a gentle and warm welcoming place. Even the decay was beautiful. I felt very safe being here, it had a homey feeling to it. After my shifts at the nursing home, I would sit on the steps of the building and eat lunch since I always missed my breaks. Sometimes I'd imagine myself among the orderlies (I worked in subacute rehab at the time, though have been floated to long term and the dementia units as well). Sometimes I'd imagine patients walking the grounds. It really is a wonderful space to walk around, I've seen plenty of families, dog walkers, joggers, and casual walkers go by. There's two large trees as well that just have a feel to them that, you can't help but wonder how many people hung around them over time, almost as if you could reach back to them. I struggle with depression and anxiety, so in a way, being able to freely visit the Richardson Complex and just get away from it all in this calming space really helped a lot. I'm terrified of modern hospitals and had a bad experience when I visited one for a particularly nasty episode. I haven't visited the asylum since, but maybe someday I'll go back and visit. Like seeing an old friend again.

I continue to be completely amazed, deeply touched, and truly humbled by so many of the comments that the channel here continues to attract and draw. Thank you so much for having watched this video, taking the time to write such a relevant and inciteful comment, and for all of your own personal history that you shared in doing so. There is so much work needing to be done today, so many people who have been cast aside and forgotten, and so much education that needs to be accomplished throughout so much of our society today. It's so important that we who have the power to speak, stand up and do so as we're able and as opportunity allows,. There's so much forgotten history that still remains so relevant today and so much that continues to need to be done. Not only do we find crucial lessons in the past, but we also find people who we can't afford to forget and the motivation to be so much more successful in all of our efforts regarding the mentally ill and mentally handicapped today. Sometimes, it is by only looking back that we find some of the most powerful keys with which to move forward.

Thank you so much for continuing to watch these videos, support the work, and to be such a strong encouragement in all that we're seeking to accomplish here on the RU-vid channel. These thin's more mean than you know and touch me more than I know how to say. I'm not putting out new videos as quickly or as often these days because I'm also now working on other projects, too - projects directly related to the work that we seek to focus upon with the channel here. You have my pledge that new videos will continue to be produced and posted, though...there's still so much untouched ground left that we need to cover.

Another beautifully presented video; thank you! It seems that at least this facility is being remembered. The administration building is beautiful. I was surprised to learn that the facility was built so close to the city. Maybe that's the reason why it was kept?

I think so, too - the facility's original location right outside a major metropolitan center no doubt had a major impact on how it moved forward. And as the city of Buffalo continued to grow around it and swallow it up, its location allowed it to remain at the forefront of the growing city and firmly affixed within the eyes and minds of its citizens. Had the facility been located way out in the middle of nowhere, as most Kirkbride facilities were, then I seriously doubt that it would have ended up being restored, remodeled, and repurposed, at least in part, as a prominent, luxury hotel. And while not all facilities located more closely to significant population centers have fared so well in the years after they were closed, the facility in Buffalo has definitely risen up to become a prime example of how well things have the potential to turn out when the proper amount of attention and resources remain involved.

Thank you so much for your continued interest, support, and involvement in the channel here - these things mean more than you know and they touch me more than I know how to say. All of your comments both encourage me in the work that I'm seeking to do, as well as encourage all others watching these videos who also read the comments that are made upon them. I will continue to produce, upload, and share relevant videos pertaining to the mentally ill and the mentally disabled, their history, their present day needs, and where we need to work toward going in the future. And, as I do, I hope that you are able to remain part of the overall work that we're seeking to accomplish at the channel here. We walk best when we walk together.

Thank you so much for your comment, your continued interest in the page, and especially for your concern :-) I am doing well and already have the next video partially done. I am taking a brief break from producing videos while I work on self-publishing my next book, which will be a collection of poetry conctrating on the ongoing tragedy of how today's mentally ill and mentally disabled are being warehoused in our nation's prison system. I am hoping to have this process completed by the beginning of next month, and then I'll finish producing the next video currently in the works :-)
